If you look at when the military started using helmets (or rather started using them _again_ ) it was in WW1. With a massive increase in the use of artillery. The primary purpose being to give some protection against shrapnel, falling debris. (Which you pointed out) Protection against bullets is probably just a bonus.

Likely its a bit of a counterplay, if they had ww1 helmets wich couldnt stop 9mm, they would just use 9mm way more often, but with the fact that low calibers cant get through anymore, they need to invest in a higher and more expensive caliber, with higher calibers come more recoil, with more recoils comes better training/better gun building and with that, comes a more expensive price

If I may point out, regarding the AK-47 vs Russian helmet, whether you noticed it or not, but the hole in the cinder block was perfectly round. Which means that round was still in in it's ballistic trajectory, and not spinning around out of control, indicating, it retained ALL of it's kinetic energy while passing through that helmet.

Keep in mind, just because the helmet stops the bullet, does not mean it can't still still result in a fatality or very serious injury. The impact may cause such a whiplash as to snap the neck and possibly spinal cord. The helmets are really designed to stop grenade or artillery fragments.

@@marysanchez1829 It wouldnt be hot enough to dissolve flesh by then, i think it would probably just be more than warm but not burning hot. i think the biggest risk would be if the bullet broke up and the shrapnel was scattered in the melon, so if he bit a piece it might have broken his tooth.

It's probably an older helmet. I suspect the same of the US helmet as well. I believe the current service helmet in both armies are rated to stop rifle rounds, and should have stopped the 7.62x39.

When kevlar was first issued, my 1st SGT didn't trust the plastic helmet, being a Viet Nam Vet. He threw the helmet onto the range and shot it with his 45 twice. Not a scratch.
A traditional steel helmet is only designed to protect from shelling shrapnel, e.g. tree bursts. Not bullets.

That u.s. helmet is actually a very old type of combat helmet. It's called a PASGT, or Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops, and was probably manufactured 35 years ago.
The current type, the ACH, or Advanced Combat Helmet, is Lvl 4 and is rated against 7.62x54 Rifle-threat.

PASGT in the US Military has been replaced by the ACH for the Army and the ECH for the Marine Corps.
MICH is just the base of which the 6b47, ACH, ECH, and more are made.
