Sto Lat to me, third generation in the states and my great babcia would sing this to me every year. I love my polish heritage and all the struggles behind it! #polishblood
Funny story: My mom is Polish, my father is Portuguese. When he first started dating my Mom, they went to celebrate a birthday for one of my Mom's relatives. Everyone starts singing Sto Lat, and then my Dad says at the end: "Why are you guys singing about Vietnam?" But then everyone explained to him what it meant and they all had a good laugh
Ha, took me a second to figure that out. Pretty much the only polish I know comes from this song. I must have been in my mid-20s before I learned that my grandma and grandpa's given names weren't babcia and dziadek. All the clues were there... you know, like the names I would see on their mail. Or, the names on things like passports. ha ha ha.
This is a staple of our family's birthday celebrations! My parents taught us eight kids the song. My brothers would sing "Vietnam" to be funny. Now my inlaws and 10 nieces and nephews know and sing the song. I'm sure Mom and Dad are smiling down from heaven whenever we sing it!
