I get emails all the time asking for advice on how to become a comedian or how to get started in stand up comedy. I wish someone had told me all this stuff when I started!

Eliot Chang has been seen on his own Comedy Central Half Hour, E!'s Chelsea Lately, Showtime's Minority Report, HBO's Looking, and NBC's Law & Order SVU. He also studied improv in NY at the Upright Citizens Brigade and then with Armando Diaz at the Magnet Theater. - Приколы
I had a conversation with a retired stand up comedian (he quit so he could be a family man) and he told me the first year he did comedy, he was on stage 300 days out of 365. He told me he loved bantering with the crowd and he felt most alive from being on stage, it was like a high for him. That's when I realized this work wasn't for me. I like to write comedy and skits, but the stage time doesn't do anything for me, and I've performed well multiple times. I think it's important for us to remember to do the very thing that makes us come alive, that's where you'll find success.
Yeah brother. True shot. Advice to live by. You might have saved someone a lot of wasted time and effort.
This video helped beyond belief. Being a comedian is my dream. Its the only thing that creates a certain breath to my life that nothing else can create. I've been terrified of being who I am. I can be other things, but I know I'd be miserable. This video is what up coming comedians NEED to hear.
Are you still doing comedy?
Took me soooo long to look for this video I watched when it first came out! I wanted to share this with my brother who is currently doing stand up comedy. Thanks E!!!!
I personally have no experience in the comedy scene as of yet, however as a high school student I really hope that that will change as I honestly cannot see any career that is more appealing to me than making people laugh for a living. I think that pretty much everything you said in this video was very informative and sounds like some solid advice, however I don't know if i agree with the "don't do this if its for attention". I have seen so many interviews of successful comedians who say quite literally that they got into comedy for girls, or they got into it because no one would listen to them otherwise or even that they were just doing it for attention.
that what he said
How's comedy going?
comedian yet?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, Eliot! Great tips. I love your comedy

Great video, bruh
alright, im sold mr chang. subcribing :)
i thought this was going to be a bunch of sarcastic bullshit but it was actually very sincere, just done humorously. thank you for the tips! good point on checking out more live comedy.
Ppl say I'm so funny whenever I talk or do anything but I still c myself lamw as fuck
Yes very good advice. I haven't gone up there yet, but I don't even want to tell anybody I"m doing it until after 30 shows. There's so much to coordinate with your mind and body that it's just too overwhelming to think of success. I'd be lucky to just walk up there and walk back off the stage under my own power. Yet I write every day and have my own humor blog...doesn't matter. Stand up is the ultimate.
Thanks for the video, I was looking for tips on being a comedian because I like making people laugh. I started working on some material, but I'm not sure how long I should make it.
Digging the ERB Genghis Khan vs Easter Bunny music.
I was scrolling in the comments to try to find if someone had figured out which ERB it was
Fuck it IAM going
I'm making a show for my parents in 1 hour...
Good luck I hope it went well
Oh Elliot. I wish you made this before I started doing stand up lol For any other comedians watching I will tell you that HE IS RIGHT ON ALL ACCOUNTS. You have to make sure you really want to be a comedian, you need to keep an education because you can't break out doing open mics if you don't have a well paying job to fall back on. And yeah, you're gonna suck at first. Just keep your head up, keep notes, and stay focused. And applause breaks are almost impossible at first. Don't go for them.
He's sorta wrong. I know, I tried standup I've been trying it for 3 years. Not once has someone laughed at me. I would always just get on stage and make sure everyone could her me. Every chance I got. NOBODY laughed at me. I'm sorry if that's harsh. I'm glad some people got to do standup comedy.
@@ashleymcdonnell2802 What's your style of comedy ?
wow thanks bro
Good advice....minimal but good advice.
Good advice, Eliot! … What was the one thing that helped you most when you were starting out?
from 0:11 Up to 0:20 I actual thought he was rapping to the background music. Love you Elliot! (:
Have my first stand up gig on 26th of this month
+John Downey How did it go?
+Meaty Ogre It went really good but little did I know that almost all of the crowed were from Holland 😂 so they didn't understand much of what I was saying because I am from the middle of Ireland which is the strongest accent in Ireland but I still got good laughs :)
+John Downey Awesome!
I love comedy, my favourite comedians are. Jon Richardson, Sean Lock, Jimmy Carr, Russell Howard and Michael McIntyre.
thanks dude. i'm 14 and I really want to persue this field. but one question: my parents want me to go to college, but i know i want to do comedy when I grow up. as far as I know, there are no comedy colleges. i feel like its a waste to go to college cuz i dont see myself in any other field. what do i do
Go to open mics at night, school by day. Look up open mics near by and go to them.
Ness is right! If something is a passion, doing it won't feel like work. If anything, going to school and doing comedy simultaneously just gives you even more fodder to write about!
Don't be fucking stupid,How can you know you gonna make it ? "Oh,what you do ?"
"I'm comedian at night and flipping burgers at McDonald's during the day"
Being successful at college is what going to make you confortable at living your Passion. Conan O'Brien is one of the most famous comedians in the US,but he didn't drop out college.
Be smart dude.
Well just think of what would happen if you succeeded or failed. Your 16-17 now. Plan 1: After high school, you find a job and move out to an apartment with roommates, assuming your parents force you to move out. After your 8 hours at the cheesecake factory, you go home relax and focus on your comedy. You're young so you have time. If you really focus on improving and learning and stay persistent, you can become a better comic. And then after 10-40 years, depending on a combination of your work ethic, pure talent and how fast you learn and improve you might "make it" meaning you can make enough money from your comedy, you can quit your job at the cheesecake factory and it will all be worth it, assuming it is. Plan 2 You go to college into a STEM field, otherwise, there is really no point in wasting your time with any other kind of major cus it doesn't guarantee a job, by no means. You'll just be stuck with more debt and be worse off further away from your desire. Most STEM degrees, the fun ones(subjective), are going to make you work for it, meaning you're going to have to devote 20-40 hours a week for schoolwork. A little less than a full-time job at the cheesecake factory, but much more stressful and mentally tiring. After school, you focus on your comedy. And if you stay persistent and focus on improving you can expect success in 10-40 years, depending on a combination of your work ethic, pure talent and how fast you learn and improve you might "make it" meaning you can make enough money from your comedy, you can quit your job Google and it will all be worth it.
The only difference is, one is a lot harder.
Your comedy's success has nothing to do with school. If you truly have no interest in it, don't let anyone shame you into going there. However, if you still do have an interest in school, it will not hinder your comedy's success.
ditching school for comedy is stupid. Not everyone might have your sense of humor
I love doing comedy in school
Me to
I want to do comidy in my talent show, mainly because the one time I actually got to say a few jokes on a mic, and people actually LAUGHED, I just, I felt some sort of click, I'm hoping people will laugh and not call me a loser, but I think I have a good joke in mind to use, but I just don't know if I can make them laugh, like, truly laugh, and this is technically my first time, because this is just me, my stage, me and me only saying jokes and making people smile, so, I'm nervous, I think have like 8 more months, but I do know, that no matter what, my first time is always the shittiest, but I don't want it to the point of nobody laughing. That's my worst fear

I want to make money. And I love making people laugh. I know that I will become homeless once my mother dies though.
To be fair, I don't think you have to go to college or university to get a degree to become comedian.
How do I become funny? I have no sense of humor
I want to be a professional clown.
