Now this is how photography tutorials should be done. Awesome! I've already been aware how to get bokeh with my camera and lenses, but your video popped up as suggestion and here is the fun fact... I've been aware of it because you taught me how to do it, with this video a few years. You do a great job to introduce people into photography techniques!

Proof that having all the latest kit doesn't necessarily make you a great photographer. Creative stuff and well captured.

For beginners: remember that Bokeh on Full Frame cameras looks different from Bokeh on APS-C and Micro 4/3s cameras. On a smaller sensor, a wider aperture lets in just as much light as on a full-frame camera, but you get less background blur. There are plenty of good videos out there demonstrating this.
And as this video demonstrates, aperture and sensor size aren't the only things to consider. The distance of the background makes a *huge* difference. If your subject is standing with a faraway vista behind them, you can get background blur even at F11. And the longer your focal lenght, the more pronounced this effect is.
One last touch. Having a light source on your subject also helps with foreground/background separation. It can give your subject more visual "value" and create more contrast between the edges of the subject and the out-of-focus background. If you want that effect of the subject looking as if it's popping out of the background, the lighting is arguably more important than the blur.
Don't have a light at hand? Pick a dark background! The effect in this video would have been much less impressive if the door where the lights hang was white. The deep brown really helped the photos.

Thank you for the tutorial-- very helpful! I noticed you were able to adjust the brightness from time to time while filming -- is this a feature on all Nikon cameras? I was curious as to how you were able to do that, like when you lowered the brightness to show us on the camera your shot of the bokeh.

I noticed this too, so I took a good look at my tripod and found that I can mount my camera sideways on the mounting plate. Now to tip sideways I do what normally causes the camera to tip up and down. It is a little awkward, but I can now do vertical shots easily. Hope this helps, Susie

When I got into photography back in the late 60's, we didn't have bokeh--all we had was "Nice background!" Thankfully, it has a name and even more thankfully, some of those old preset lenses with lots of curved diaphragm blades make for some very nice bokeh. Especially longer lenses paired with extension tubes. Very good vid! Thanks!

The bokeh on my old Minolta-Rokkor 58mm f1.4 lens is amazingly soft. Great technique you have here. I knew it was a great pc. of glass as Minolta built some lenses for Leica. Kodak invented the digital camera and is out of the camera business. Minolta invented TTL and autofocus and sold it's camera division to Sony. Canon and Nikon are the big two now, I went w/ Canon. Thanks, great video.

In common usage, the terms are interchangeable. But technically, there is a difference. F/Stop is the unit of measurement describing the size of the aperture. The aperture, of course, is the actual opening created by the diaphragm blades in the lens.

  • @jonray107

@PhotoExtremist it was written in the roman alphabet as bokeh, but the "e" sound in Japanese is closest the english "ay". The 'H" is the added at the end to show that the word has 2 syllables instead of being "boke", like "spoke".
    source: Wikipedia
[e̞] This is a pure e, unlike the English "ay", which is a diphthong.
An example. [ple̞ː] 'play' is similar the the "eh" in "bokeh".
Think if it as "bowquet", like bow + the quet from "Bouquet" of flowers.

    Origin
The term comes from the Japanese word boke (暈け or ボケ), which means "blur" or "haze", or boke-aji (ボケ味), the "blur quality". The Japanese term boke is also used in the sense of a mental haze or senility.[9] The term bokashi (暈かし) is related, meaning intentional blurring or gradation.

@22soultaker Switch it out of "green" mode and into Av. Crank the little dial on the top to the left as far as you can go, that will be your widest aperature (smallest F stop number). Focus on your subject and click. Your background will be more blurry. To compare, crank the dial the other way to a small aperature (big number) and the background will be in focus. You'll need more light or slower shutter for that.

You can also stop your lens down by one or two steps, and you will see octagons, heptagons or hexagons, depending on the number of diaphram blades in the lens. I don't think that's very beautiful, but it might be the effect you're after.
On a related note, Lensbaby has special effect lenses that allow you to use custom aperture blades that can have some kind of shape in them. That shape will show up instead of these so-called "bokehballs".

At only around US $200 the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S would work great on a D5100 as a beginner lens, and it would allow you to do depth of field tricks like this. With lenses that only allow for smaller apertures like f/3.5 you would have trouble doing things like this as easily unless, as Evan suggested, you have a zoom lens like a 200 or 300mm. Search RUclips for bokeh and watch a few videos once you get your camera and get more familiar with it and you will catch on. Have fun!

  • @TheEDWOULD
    @TheEDWOULD 13 лет назад

@LAtrailers I would get a 50mm 1.8 lens, its a great little lens even if you aren't doing shots like this, great in low light. I'm guessing if you're using the 18-55 kit lens that's the only one you have, so the 50 1.8 makes for a really good second lens. Cheap too, in fact I think it's the cheapest lens Canon makes.
So you don't necessarily need it, but you should get it!

  • @MattBlytheTheOne

Was that a reversing ring on the 50mm? I noticed the f stop didn't show on your display which is typical if you reversed the lens?
