This has got to be one of the best videos I have seen in awhile! Man! I take a good bit of night shots and this was so inspiring to me. Thank you so much man!!
Watched this movie over a solid 50 times. I just love it, it changed my life from being a musician and am now enjoying my nights in peace. It's a better world when you have time to stand back and observe it in front of you. Nothing is more rewarding than a successful composition. Thanks for all the help and inspiration.
I always come back and watch this video every couple months or so. It is where I come home to. This video changed my life and made me pick up a camera. I can't thank you enough Lance. Got your book and already can't wait for the next. From the bottom of my heart...thank you I have found peace when I go shoot and it is so beautiful. Keep up the good work. :)
An inspiring video. I'm a beginner. I've been shooting night photography for about 3 months now. I've even gotten a couple of my mates into it. It's unbelievable what you can bring to life at night. I really enjoyed seeing some of your brilliant work. Thank you
Thank you Ray, those are very kind words, and we are glad you have been inspired by our work!
Lance thank you for sharing your expertise in light painting. I find night photography so inspiring ,it is an whole other world out there that so meany people never see .Thanks again for a beautiful presentation very informative and creative .
This video gave me new look for the photography! I have watched this video over and over again for hundred times and keep watching it. absolutely amazing! perfect! Thank ya!
this is really inspirational! just what i need. artists cant force inspiration and thats the hardest part having things like this to inspire you are just fantastic.
The beauty of night photography came from the philosophy behind it. I fall in love in astrophotography because of all this.
loved the way this video happened in front of my eyes....
All of this beautiful imagery and composition my God. This short film sparks the child in me. I am a complete amateur photographer ready to embark with pure imagination to find my way in the dark. I want to thank you very much for showing me the possibilities.
Hi! Thanks for your video on Night Photography. I have just started to get interested in Night Photography. I live in the Lincolnshire Wolds which has many old and abandoned farm buildings which I have been exploring. Your use of artificial light has inspired me to try it out (I am charging my torch batteries as I speak). Thanks again. Michael. Swinhope. Lincolnshire Wolds.
Wow - what talent and stunning photographs!!
If I lived in the states that class would be an absolute must!!
Thanks for sharing
I first saw the school bus picture while looking through RUclips a few months ago, I am now saving for a camera. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world and possibilities of night photography.
I really enjoyed this video. Night photography is about 75% of what I shoot. When I shoot during the day I just don't see the same beauty that I do at night. It's always great to find other nocturnal photographers. I look forward to attending one of your seminars someday.
WOW after watching this my mind is so on fire and burning with Ideas! I can not wait for spring to get here so I can get out and enjoy night Photography! Just wanted you to know that I already have a burning desire to do this. Went out last year and got me a Canon t4i to start with, and now you have turned it into a obsession! The Monster has Bitten Me Good On This One! Thanks So Much For Sharing This!!
Thanks Don. As an educator, getting others excited about what I do is the greatest reward!
well Job well done I hope one day I have the money to be able to attend one of the classes so that I may further advance my knowledge of light painting
Your photography is a masterpeace, your technique is brilliant for the night photography.
Heading to Death Valley in a few weeks, going to try this. Thank you for sharing. This is simply amazing!
This is such a great video.. I love light painting an night photography. This has inspired me to visit some local spots. Thank you. You guys would probably love Fort Churchill Nevada. You presented some very similar location types.
I went out and tried this for myself, it was great and now has me looking for things like old machinery. I need more practice but I think I picked it up well just need to practice more. Great video and workshop thank you.
Videos like this - along with instructional videos - really help to get the creative juices flowing and really inspire me to get out there and create some visual art.
Photography is more than just taking pictures :-)
The way this video was shot is absolutely Gorgeous!, the photos are phenomenal
photographers, changing the way we see the world and all its beauty
watched this like 5 times and I am still amazed every time! Inspired!
Beautiful! Adding this to my list of things I want to do. If I'm ever in the neighbourhood I'm going to take a workshop too.
Thank you Lance! I've watched the vid again a few times (with my daughter too) and I still enjoy it every time! Years ago I had a color darkroom and experimented with long exposures. I'm proud of most of my work but, with digital now I'm totally excited. I used a cable or air actuator to open and close the shutter. How do you do the same thing now with a DSLR? Can't wait to get started. I've taken your advice regarding camera selection. There are some great used cameas available! Thanks!
I love night photography. I think one of the interesting things about it is that one normally can't see what you can capture on camera at night. Not even at lower shutter speed, since the human eye switches into a (not completely) "monochromatic" mode, so you basically don't see saturated colors at night, while you camera can...
The light painting photos are just awesome!
i just use my kit lens 18-55mm lens since i cant afford any lenses. but it still takes beautiful picture. with that, i am grateful =.)
+Jimmy Merc "the best camera is the one you have with you."
Andrew Ward i agree :)
3:30 Majestic photo. I've read a lot about light painting in photography books but didn't think thats that is so cool.
I am so intrigued! I think I am going to go give it a try tonight. My camera's longest shutter speed is only 30 seconds, but I'm going to go see what I can do with my own area and equipment tonight.
This is great! I can't wait to learn more about painting with light.
Best video about night photography ever .... thanks ... today i am really satisfied....
night photography is my one fav kind of photography!!! and i have read your books its very good!!
thank you :)
Wow this video opened my mind to a new world of photography. Im excited to get out there and try this
light painting photography is amazing! this changed my idea on photography!
I live in So.Cal. I want to attend this workshop. This is truly amazing...
Had a bad weekend of long exposures, this video always inspires me to stick with it and you will see the true beauty. You don't always get great shots. Everything has to work just right. keep it up guys, hope to see you at a workshop one day. Have some on the east coast. Plz
You should have been here when were were doing this on film! LOL $1 per each exposure!
i love everything about night...~ it`s good when someone can "capture" the moment itself nicely..
I love night photography, coz its a different experience altogether... i've done so many night shots before... hope I'll use this awesome book to take better night shots with my D7000... thank u Lance :D
fantastic work, photos of the chapel at 3:25 and 3:47 in the bus. the photos were magnificent.
It feels like a majority of camera videos are about consumerism. Its a nice change to find something inspiring.
i really loved the night photography so i started to shoot stars moon. But this kind of night photography just blew me.never thought that I have various objects nearby other than stars and moon to shoot
This video inspired me so much that I am going out tonight to try out some photography. These photos on this video turned out so great, so fantastic. Keep it up! :)
please do! i just found out about this. it's amazing. i never thought of painting in exposure with a beam like color with a brush. it's fascinating!
This is just amazing, how beautiful is our earth thank god for this beauty and just the tech to do this 10/10 pictures :)
please do, my head is buzzing with ideas now. great job and thanks for sharing.!
You're welcome, it's very gratifying to inspire people to try something new.
I feel peaceful after watching this.
Terlingua is a special place. Very nice work indeed.
This was mind blowing for me, I didn't know anything about night photography and especially not light painting. Incredible! thanks for uploading this video and i'll be sure to check out your websites : )
19,000 views is a big number, but with such a well made tutorial/ documentary, I would expect this to have more. It's a shame I live in Scotland and can't get to your tutorials. I would love to work with you.
Just wow! I feel like it's very personal the way they took the photographs.
Use low ISO, bulb exposure, you may want to turn your noise reduction on (not sure the Canon has it) and shoot in RAW mode. Also test your lenses for leaking light. Most importantly, have fun and experiment.
simply unbelievable material!
oh well done!!! this is very informative.. i knew there was a reason that i got back in photography! thank you very much!
This is the best video I have ever seen in my whole life 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 I wanna be a good creative photographer 😍😍😍😍
Thanks! That's high praise! Any current Canon or Nikon DSLR will work well for NPy, but I recommend stepping up one notch from entry level if you can afford it. New is key tho- the technology is constantly improving by leaps and bounds. Other brands are ok- Pentax, Sony, etc, but Canon and Nikon have the bulk of the market share for good reason.
you guys awesome and inspire other photographer & taking photography to the next level
The most important thing to remember is that creativity isn't confined by a budget. Cheap lights and even strobe-flashes can do an awesome job. Go out there and try different things :)
This is really incredible and most inspiring photo what I seen since few month. Really great.
@skyephoto That's great to hear! Motherwell's a little bit south there and I've only been doing photography for about a year or so with much to learn. I feel more comfortable with urban decay etc, I find it more interesting with sneaking about, which is absolutely terrible and terrifying when done alone.
wonderful new ideas in photography
Stunning ! I am going to try light painting, looks awesome !
truly beautiful....great video, too....simply loved it....
Very beautiful video , one of the best i have seen about this subject . Well done.
Wow. Amazing video. I feel so inspired right now. Cant wait to start tonight.

27 people are still scared of the dark. Excellent work, very inspiring.
Oh my !!!! Now that's something I could get into !!! Thanks for sharing this video ! Awesome work and My head is full of ideas... Now where do I start ?
Thank you for sharing your creativity!
I read your book, you inspired me alot. Thank you very much!
I wonder who are those 66 people disliked it. It's simply Amazing, THANK YOU.
I was wondering the same thing. I'm inspired to go try my hand at it now
Haha, while watching the video an idea popped up including my Petzl headlamp and what do you know? The guys in the video have Petzl headlamps. Wonderful, wonderful.
Absolutely amazing. I think i just found a summer project for myself
fantastic pictures. you deserve all the credit you get, thanks for sharing.....lolwit
Wow, the video itself is shot and edited extremely well. I'm feeling inspired! Leaving this comment half way through haha, great work.
Great inspiring vid, love night photography myself. Wish Imcould attend one of your workshops
Great video guys.....inspirational as Matt has mentioned....
Cold nights of course will minimize the censor heating, but here in Greece for example, and mostly during the summer, this can really be an issue.Maybe you are right.I didn't had a problem myself, but i ve read about it on some forums, and not only once.
Great! I enjoy light painting photography! Photography is my passion and LPphoto its famous theme
@skyephoto after buying my nikon d7000 and other eccessories, I decided my specialty will be portrait and night-time photography, this video has inspired me, i am a amateur and now i am on a mission. thank you so much
Nice video. I love night photography. Over the years, I'm shooting more and more at night. I just noticed that over 90% of my photography now is night :-)
A truly inspirational video and fantastic tips. Dude absolute respect.
images some of the best nite shots ive seen, awesome stuff you guys, and the film clip pretty tidy too!
with your camera in manual mode you then use a flash light to find your focus points and start shooting.
hope that helps
A remote for the camera will enable you to set your shutter speed to the "Bulb" setting which allows you to open, and close the shutter at your command.
It's a creative decision as much as a technical one. It depends on the effect you are trying to achieve. You should test your camera to determine what is the highest ISO you can use that will give you acceptable image quality for your specific needs.
nice one chap, that was really inspiring
great photos..when i watch it.....i just say amzing....
Just a thought. I'm intrigued by the technique of light
painting. So what about the difference of color temperature between modern LED
lights vs. old fashion incandescent light bulbs? I would think that the two
types could lead to more interesting possibilities.
I first got into photography around 1980 with a Ricoh 35mm
using mostly Kodachrome 64 slide film. Then life got in the way and I drifted
out of the hobby. Later when digital cameras started to appear, they just weren't
very good or too expensive. Now, after see what my brothers modern Pentax
cameras were capable of, I now have a renewed interest. Just bought a Pentax
K50 now I have a lot to learn and relearn.
wow its really the first time, I came across this concept. I am just a amateur and looking forward towards working with these ideas. Thanks for sharing :-)
For starry skies, try an exposure of 15-20 seconds at f4 at iso 1600 with no ambient light other than a quarter moon!
You're off to a good start- just keep practicing! Try lighting your objects/scenes from multiple points/directions, use a baseline exposure for the background that is about 2 stops underexposed, and trying lighting from 90-180 degrees from the camera position.
wow it is almost 3:30 in the A.M, I should be sleeping but this vid makes me wanna get out of bed and start taking photo of the night sky... thanks for sharing =0)
truly inspirational, i really want to go outside ! i just bought the book on amazon too !
this was so satisfying to watch
this video has given me hope, thankyou so much
