"You can't expect to pick up a violin & play it in a week but people pick up a camera & take good photographs in a week but that doesn't happen!" What a good interview! He was simple & concise with the information, so much knowledge!
There you go: a brilliant photographer. Earned his degrees and all that. Making absolutely stunning artwork and then says: practice! Of all the videos I see on YT, there are 99.9% discarding that fact. While it is as true as simple that without practice, you don't gain experience, a lot of people these days think the camera makes the picture, Bob (Mister Holmes) points it out. It gives you confidence and that is translated into the photos. Thanks on separating the chaff from the corn. Love.
What I love from Bob's picture is that it stand out from others is his art is beautiful either coloured or black and white, and all will still feel the same even it turned into one another.
Bob Holmes is one of my favorite photographers. His quality of his work is consistently high. The images he produces makes you think he has somehow captured the essence or sole from what is in front of him, and always seems to have the perfect shot lined up right in front of his lens. Stunning images. Wish i could get even close.
As a trained illustrator, which (during my degree training) had a large emphasis on drawing from life, looking at form, shape and light was always very important, something that is standing me in very good stead as pick up a camera seriously for the first time! great show, many thanks :)
Excellent video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about - Zetanniay Visionary Preset (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for creating stunning photos in minutes without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cooworker at last got excellent results with it.
what a powerful words of encouragement and helpful tips from mr.bob.. i'm beginner in photography and after i heard his message it felt like he's talking to me directly.. thanks mr.bob..Godbless you
Once again a great interview!! One tip I can give you, is to adjust your settings as light changes around you *before* you shoot. So let's say you're moving from point A to point B, you adjust your settings looking at the light changing around you before you arrive at the location. This tip I got from a wildlife photographer, a very old man, who used only a film camera (I believe a Leica, but who cares), a 50 and a 75mm lens - yes, for wildlife. He knew everything about the forest that he shot in, down in Compiègne, France. He always worked in that same forest. He knew exactly when and where the animals where going to show up, how to approach them etc He would always adjust his settings constantly so that when the animal came it was always right. One of the greatest photographers ever. I wish I remembered his name, but I was little - my dad probably would know it... anyway... There you have the secret. ;)
Love this video. I would love to work towards a career in photography, but I am stuck as an amateur because I'm not able to afford anything more than a point and shoot. After watching this video, I am actually thankful that I have been forced to make a lot out of a little, because it's given me an instinct for photography beyond all of the complex equipment, and someday when I get a really good camera, I'll have a very different perspective than most.
Auto ISO is your best friend. It'll keep it as low as possible, and you just set your upper limit. Mine is at 16OO max on a D7100, so I know I won't shoot higher than 1600, and if it's bright enough, I'll get 100.
Finally, a channel that talks about PHOTOGRAPHY!! Not many out there to be honest! A word of advice however: in your lovely collection of interviews, make sure you get to interview Gianni Berengo Gardin, a world-famous living photographer (quite old already) who was prised highly by Cartier-Bresson among many other great photographers! He lives in Milan. Good luck with that!
@@marcsilber Will do, and I hope you get to interview him as he's a titan in the photography community with over 250 books published and his work shown all over the world. Look up his work when you get the chance, especially 'Vaporetto' a total masterpiece!
my fav part is how this video is made lol it starts off telling us his SUPERB background and you suddenly get the feeling to shut the H up and listen to what this man has to say. Impressive. thank you.
Too bad I didnt watch something like this years ago, its so inspiring, now Im 32 and I think its too late to make photography as my profession, but its my hobby and I can live with it. I hope people like Bob Holmes keep inspiring us to shot everyday.
Glad I made myself endure the opening spasm of raucous noise someone in the production team thinks is music. This short film proves again that sometimes you have to suffer a bit to make gains. Holmes answers are like his pictures., the essentials, nothing extraneous. and tidy around the edges They reflect a philosophy, which can , through diligent adherence, help those who want it enough, to see their world through a better lens Pure gold, and many thanks.
yes, however the more you learn (why we create our videos) practice (get out and shoot), and learn from feedback the more you get in touch with your craft.
this guy is awesome. i like his simplicity and truth of the photography. he's so right when he says gear is 2ndary. lens and cameras not the impt thing! this is so true. light is the important thing! DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE as he says lol! so nice.
I've been studying the workings of photography for a few months now, and just started getting some basic gear together early last month. I love working with natural light. I've used my built in flash occasionally, but I'm focusing more on getting the best shot in cam to minimize post processing. Videos like this are inspirational. Thank you.
So many good things here but I was especially happy to hear him say its easy to forget the settings.. I do that a lot and I am glad to hear it's not just me..:)
Thank you so muck for this lovely video. I am very new to photography but today I have learned some basic stuffs which I will remember for a long long time.
Hi, what a great video. Recently purchased a dslr and am eager to get started on travel photography. thanks for the interview you had with Bob Holmes. Very informative and great advice. Thanks again Mr Siber :)
I love his work. Thank you for hosting his commentary. I only wish he lived nearby so I could learn from him. Thanks again, look forward to his next video.
What a GREAT interview! I am so glad I cam across this video, now I know what name to look for when I buy my next books! I ABSOLUTELY loved how you mentioned it's not the equipment you use, but how you use it! Bob, you are one wise guy! Thank you!
Yip, I also force myself to use manual mode, but hey when things happen fast around me, I sometimes just start laughing at myself (trying to cope with settings).......however, photography is such a wonderful world to be in..!!
Thank you very much..... really nice nice video... was helpful... i love his line "photography is deceptively simple" .... really it is...... Thanks Bob and thanks Marc...!
Great video, reverting back to old school - Ansel Adams - how to look at lighting. Digital photography is a great tool for productivity and satisfies the "instant gratification" element in all of us, it mean nothing if you can understand how to use it properly.
Truly inspirational video. Gave me some really great tips. I was also keen on gear, and while gear is important, as a tool for your job, it's the skill of your art that sets you apart.
I followed the link but it didn't lead to the video. I am saving them all on my Playlist so I can go through them all. If you give me the name of the video I can find it if you like :) Thank you and have a nice evening.
Super nice guy. Informative and well presented video. I am sat here processing wedding images from the last job and this made me stop. I wonderful distraction, thank you
Great tips, still a student and my dream is to be a photographer. Next year to Iran and I really have to nail it while I'm there. Alot of practice I suppose. :) Thank you for this motivational video.
A very wise Man. Thanks for sharing this Marc. 11 years later and the advice is still solid and golden.
You bet
"You can't expect to pick up a violin & play it in a week but people pick up a camera & take good photographs in a week but that doesn't happen!"
What a good interview! He was simple & concise with the information, so much knowledge!
thanks Rohit, yes Bob is the master of making photography clear and understandable
It took me 5 years to find a video this good.
🙏
He uses the phrase "very fortunate" in the introduction. Very talented is more like it. He deserves all the praise and awards he gets.
thank you, glad to hear and stay tuned for more!
2:15 "You have to look at it as the camera looks at it". He is preaching the need for EVF before its time!
There you go: a brilliant photographer. Earned his degrees and all that. Making absolutely stunning artwork and then says: practice!

Thanks on separating the chaff from the corn. Love.
great to hear and we have a new one with Bob being edited right now
What I love from Bob's picture is that it stand out from others is his art is beautiful either coloured or black and white, and all will still feel the same even it turned into one another.

Robert Holmes is one of the great stock photogs. How nice to see him talk about his craft on this video. Thanks, Marc.
thanks for viewing! Good shooting
fantastic Kenneth, nice to have you along.
As a trained illustrator, which (during my degree training) had a large emphasis on drawing from life, looking at form, shape and light was always very important, something that is standing me in very good stead as pick up a camera seriously for the first time! great show, many thanks :)
I absorbed so much from this video.Thank you, this is why I cherish youtube for what its worth.
What an interview! He shared true wisdom.

Great vids Bob ..
as a Scot based in London ,
you are an inspiration of what a lad born in UK can achieve .
thanks
Wow, great tips in this! Awesome!
what a powerful words of encouragement and helpful tips from mr.bob.. i'm beginner in photography and after i heard his message it felt like he's talking to me directly.. thanks mr.bob..Godbless you
yes he is a great communicator, glad to help you advance your photography!
He's a legend indeed. Such simple tips, but really that's all there is.
Hands > camera
Once again a great interview!!

Thanks Jas, very good tip, be ahead of the light changes so you capture the moment. Let me know if you recall his name
It's always great to hear masters speak out on what they think about photography. Thanks for the share!
You are a pioneer in natural lighting photography Bob. Thanks for the social contribution into the world of photography.
Love this video. I would love to work towards a career in photography, but I am stuck as an amateur because I'm not able to afford anything more than a point and shoot. It is always nice to listen to a legend.
you'll be able to hear more from him soon!
I've watched two videos of this guy and I think he's so good to listen to. the best advice told so well.
The horse and cart at 2:08 is a masterpiece.
Yes indeed, i could listen to this guy all day and i cant get this picture with horse out of my mind.
Auto ISO is your best friend. It'll keep it as low as possible, and you just set your upper limit. Mine is at 16OO max on a D7100, so I know I won't shoot higher than 1600, and if it's bright enough, I'll get 100.
Brice Deylac same settings on my Sony a7R3, except for landscapes on a tripod, where I choose 50 ISO
Exactly! I tell people the best camera is the one that most gets out of the way between you and the picture.
So friggin true!
