Southern region locomotives, steam , diesel and electric always are close to my heart. Being born in Kent, a lot of memories of the latter days of steam. Electric trains and diesel engines are more common in my memories. The old double decker trains ( only 2 produced) were my fondness, as my father was a guard scheduled on them, and although he complained about loading them and unloading them, they were unique. Like a lot of secr, southern etc, the varying shades of green are often forgotten. Nice loco though. The C class were lovely, never seen one for real, but have seen lots in videos/film. Long time ago. Well done in re reviewing.
These locos were used on the SR until the end of steam. The version with the late crest would be in the correct era for a 3rd rail layout with Bachnann DEMUs and EMUs. So if you model Southern Region, then this is a helpful review. Thanks for uploading.
A great little loco, had mine awhile but always runs smoothly and looks great even in late br livery with a small goods rake. Bachmann made a series of superb little locos in the past before the prices went crazy. Good to see it reviewed again Sam.
I have three of these C class, all bought at a time when prices were more reasonable (c. £70-ish), including the fully lined SECR livery on 592, which was the same price as the others at the time I purchased it. I also have another SECR version with simplified lining, and a BR late crest black one. All are great runners, and slow running with decent DCC decoders is also very good. I have not noted the large gap under the cab sides that you have on your model, so it may have been a rogue one that escaped the quality control. It would have been interesting to see if your BR one had the same thing.
Hi Sam I do have two of these loco's the lined black one that you reviewed and the SECR Green one from the original batch. They are both lovely especially the green one but I only paid £120 for it brand new so the new prices are obsurd in my opinion expecially when newer 060s have completely beaten it in nearly every area the Hornby J36, J15, Bachmann's 812 are a few examples. I think the newer secr green one released in 2018/2019 time and I do recall that even they were sitting on the shelves of the retailers for years so I think if the price is bad enough even the nice liveries dont sell well. I think Hornby had a TTS sound Flying Scotsman out at the same time which you could get for and less than the RRP of the C class which was crazy.
Hi Sam. I have a couple of these Backmann C class O-6-0 tender locomotives which I got for about a £100 each from a now closed down shop in Worthing. I am keeping my eye open for another one in the SE&CR green livery which I think is a gorgeous livery. I have got the SE&CR D class in the as preserved green livery locomotion and it's a superb model. I haven't got as many locomotives as you have but I was watching you count up you 500 locos while I was trying to locate your review of the C class locomotive. I will have to search for it again as I enjoyed your review of the C class when I did find it. Bye from Ian.
Nice review - good to see some older claasics like this looked at. I was viewing some videos of 'real' locos on preserved railways, and found myself drifting into a 'Sam's Trains' attitude - not sure if that dome has been fitted as well as it could have been etc.! Many rthanks for keeping up the standards
The steam effect is very realistic, and the sounds from the pre-fitted speaker are perfectly in-sync. There are no traction tires fitted - which is good, but there do not appear to be any pickups on the tender wheels - which is not good. But at least there are separately fitted vacuum pipes and usable three-link couplings on the front and rear!
Lovely Loco Sam. Oh yes, all that lining on British steamers usually looks so enticing and first-rate.. Prussian locos had something similar. How on earth did they keep them clean. £102 is a good deal. Max ~120 as an RRP should be about okay, but £200 is indeed typically beyond B ridiculous, lol. For that it should not have omitted at least lights, a 5-pole, flywheel and pick-ups on all the wheels including the tender, nor should that whopping gap between the cab and plate exist for that matter (knocks off one star immediately for us). Evidently, the wired connection between the tender and loco should have been premium professionally done as well. As it is, ~100 max. Had it all-wheel pickups, then 120 as maximum but still that gap is rather annoying. However, at £102 she's a good deal Sam 👍 Cheerio.
I bought the beautiful green SE&CR C Class just this week. I already had the grey livery. I now need some coaches. Hint: You can still buy the lovely green body and tender pieces from Bachmann (I bought some S&DJR bodies this week) but they aren't cheap. Edit: and the wheels too
I think you ought to show instillation of the brake rigging on an upcoming review. In light of the tight curves I can see why you don’t do that. I think it would be useful to show that as some would be easier than others or not worth the effort if it’s too difficult.
Hi Sam, good and useful review as always. I've a video suggestion for you,. How about an overview of the different manufacturers as IMO each have their pros and cons? Hornby: - Tend to be good, reliable mechanisms IMO. - Traditionally not the best for detail or finish, however in recent years there have been big improvements in this regard. - Quality control not always the best. - Huge range of models, though not always a wide range of liveries available. Have models catering to different parts of the market e.g. Railroad for those on a budget or who prefer more robust models. Dublo for those willing to pay more for diecast and Collectors. - Relatively high prices, though not as bad as Bachmann and budget models in the Railroad range. Some older tooling models still in the main range and priced as such, which should probably be moved to the Railroad Range. - Packaging on recent models has seen big improvements in line with other manufacturers. Others: I don't have any models yet of other manufacturers yet, though I've an Accurascale class 37 on order and have been impressed with their customer service/response to queries I had, so can't comment from experience. What a lovely loco! I wonder about the accuracy of printed on lining though, as for even something relatively simple (LNER apple green), you need to be able to make 0.06mm lines. The two way I know how to do this are expensive bow pens, or scraping away the edges.
Thank you! Yeah it's very tricky to do this at home - I don't think I could master the bow pen... you've still got to be straight with it!! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

While I have mixed feelings on reviewing models that apparently you’ve run in the past, I can’t deny that the Southern lined black looks good here. Green lining - how can something so subtle look this good. Sorry you weren’t able to get the pregrouping version, if you become bold enough, maybe you could do a video on reverting it back into the SECR livery. Good lord knows that in a market flooded with pregrouping locos in BR black, videos/tutorials of the sort are what we need!!
Thanks David - I think it is the subtlety that looks so good, always loved this livery! Maybe that could work well for a project actually, nice idea! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice Bachmann loco Sam :) and did you now there’s a Hornby Toy Story train so that’s something you could always look into if your interested and just as a suggestion thanks 😉🚂
Those subtle green trims on boiler are somehow pretty great idea visually, never thought black would go this well with cold colour like green. hmm over 100 years is not that much, considering the Rainhill trials are almost 2 centuries ago. Early loco from before 1'850s maybe up to 1'880s i get but once you get the 1'900 its very quickly barrelling to retirement of steam, i'd conssider thi- ahrem last century to be the mid-late steamers. Sorry i am being weird again.. or still. kinda wanna make class c joke about it being class*y, but its c class rather than having the letter on other end of the word. glad it is still beloved.
It's a shame that the C class in SECR green livery is so expensive; I would probably own one if she was less than £130. I don't care for the Southern and BR liveries because I don't think green lining goes well with black (quite the opposite) and the plain black is incredibly boring. But I do agree with Sam on the RRP. Over two hundred pounds is ludicrous for a basic 0-6-0.
Would this loco, in real life, have ever been in Southern Railway Olive Green? Or the lighter green that appeared after WW2? Just wondered whether anyone out there knows?
So, a thought for you...... You have demonstrated a 'steam' loco that runs on your electric track.... Why not a proper steam powered loco, now that's a challenge for you!
Very nice steamy, although I don't have room for her. Thankyou so much for screaming in front of the camera, it was so hilariously funny. Of course, I'd better tone things down a bit because you don't want to lose your voice. I know I said this before, but I'll say it again: you're cute when you get scared.
The C class from Bachmann looks very nice and the quality is pretty solid which I like it. Unfortunately, I do have to agree with you about the price for the C class being expensive. It is definitely not worth over 200 British pounds because it does not a modern mechanism and no tender pickups along with being quite old. Overall, the C class is still a pretty good model Sam. By the way, are you planning to review the new Hornby 2MT locomotive on your channel soon because I really want to know how its mechanism looks like in your opinion Sam. Please stop avoiding my questions Sam because I am getting tired of you not answering my questions.
Overrated since it has no tender pick-ups. That's a no deal for me. And I prefer by miles the Hornby J15 that has a 5-pole motor with flywheel and costed less than this C-Class. I own 3 Bachmann steam loco's and they are poor runners compared with Hornby's. Stalling on points is the order of the day. It looks lovely though - but as my late father said: "a small light in a big lantern". Thanks for reviewing !
£204 for a small, analogue, 0 6 0 is absolutely outrageous - I don'r care if it plays the Hallelujah chorus in stereo while it reverses into sidings - I'm not watching any more!

Sam, Where is the other video in 2018?
It's a shame that the C class in SECR green livery is so expensive; I would probably own one if she was less than £130. I don't care for the Southern and BR liveries because I don't think green lining goes well with black (quite the opposite) and the plain black is incredibly boring.
But I do agree with Sam on the RRP. Over two hundred pounds is ludicrous for a basic 0-6-0.
Add a smoke box to this guy and he’s just James no question
Odd one is d1?
Not quite!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Would this loco, in real life, have ever been in Southern Railway Olive Green? Or the lighter green that appeared after WW2? Just wondered whether anyone out there knows?
I predicted this! Suspect the next is the 5700
Ahh good guesses - I won't spoil!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
So amazing review
Thanks Justin!
There you are again 🙂
I bought my SECR livery one for £65 new a long time ago , just before Bachmann raised their prices. Nice model , but I wouldn't pay over £100 for it.
Ahh fantastic - worth every penny of £65 for sure!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
So, a thought for you...... You have demonstrated a 'steam' loco that runs on your electric track.... Why not a proper steam powered loco, now that's a challenge for you!
I know! I'd love to get one of the Hornby live steam locos, but they're quite unreliable these days supposedly ;(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Make your own little steam powered engine, based on this; Traction Engine Starter Kit (Google it) @@SamsTrains
Brilliant looking engine 👍😊🤩😎
Thanks Sam, I agree!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cool
Thanks Alex! :D
Hey Sam :D
Hello!
Very nice steamy, although I don't have room for her. Thankyou so much for screaming in front of the camera, it was so hilariously funny. Of course, I'd better tone things down a bit because you don't want to lose your voice. I know I said this before, but I'll say it again: you're cute when you get scared.
That's okay Kelly, thanks for watching anyway! Ahh that's a pleasure, I'm glad you liked the screaming, hahaha!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I wouldn’t call the lining on the boiler precise. One band looks half-green half-black.
Hi!
Hello!
Just boosting the algoritme
haha thank you!!
Black
Yes!
Last day of the Crystal Palace high level Railway 1954
T9 is the odd one out
Good review of a lovely model. However, the mould tool.split line along the top of the boiler is abysmal!!!
A superb loco a bit pricey at £200 though
Overrated since it has no tender pick-ups. That's a no deal for me. And I prefer by miles the Hornby J15 that has a 5-pole motor with flywheel and costed less than this C-Class. I own 3 Bachmann steam loco's and they are poor runners compared with Hornby's. Stalling on points is the order of the day. It looks lovely though - but as my late father said: "a small light in a big lantern". Thanks for reviewing !
Just to show the cab interior to friends it is worth the £102
I like your loco tests Sam but the obsession with crawl is very tedious.
Could you shout out my sister ameera as it is her birthday on Thursday
Ahh I've already filmed all of this weeks' videos, but a big happy birthday to Ameera for Thursday!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Sam
Great loco mad price lol
£204 for a small, analogue, 0 6 0 is absolutely outrageous - I don'r care if it plays the Hallelujah chorus in stereo while it reverses into sidings - I'm not watching any more!
That is some seriously sketchy soldering. Guessing no lights because lights require a basic knowledge of how to do wiring.
Bachmann= High Price = Rip Off
haha yeah! Though I'm not sure what Bachmann's price was for this in 2011, I couldn't find one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
None they are all secr locos
Nope!!
Cool
