What you think is the exhaust is actually the air intake for the air filter, the exhaust runs up the front left pillar of the cab. Old farm tractors had very similar air intakes, nice looking model, thank you for sharing.👍
What’s stopping you? Get some n scale track and model an industrial or mining operation. Slate, coal or zinc/ lead mining would be great for a little diesel like this!
Beautiful little model. Something very satisfying about seeing a miniscule facsimile of a real object. I thought it looked familiar - when you showed the livery options, the bright yellow one made me think of the huge semi subterranean RN ordnance depot at Dean Hill, in Wiltshire. The engines, including Hunslet 0-6-0 'Flameproof' diesels, were kept in the underground magazines.
Ahh very interesting - I'll have to check some of those out! I thought their foray into British OO9 was pretty disappointing! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Problem with insulfrog points and 009 is partly the short wheelbases and partly the dip in the frogs, which causes the opposite wheel to lift and lose connection. Pretty much all 009 layouts use electro points.
I have a 0-4-0 H0e diesel from liliput that has working lights, a decent cab, and a 6 pin DCC socket, so its not impossible to have every feature. I highly recommend to try one of those 0-4-0 Austrian diesels (I think one even has a working "blinker") I owe one from the 1st release and its my most used H0e locomotive ever since.
Just coming back to comment that yes I have now had the courage to pull this model apart and install not just DCC sound, but also a stay-alive kit (2x super capacitors)...it all actually fits...just 😅 And needless to say, it transforms this engine to a fantastic new level.
I have to say so far Bachmann have really hit it out of the park with their OO9 locos. Got this one myself, the lined maroon livery is amazing. Hoping we see some more lined liveries in the future for this, perhaps a lined dark blue and a lined green.
Looks a bit more like a Ruston Shunter, if you don't mind my saying so. However, I've thrown myself in at the deep end of the pool. I've bought my first N Gauge GWR Large Prairie Tank Engine, of Graham Farish status. The track and controller are set up on my living room floor, and thanks to Alfie, I now have two open wagons and two closed vans to go with the Toad Van. The first nerve-racking test run won't commence till November, and I'm still suffering a nervous attack of the butterflies.
It does look very similar to a Ruston you're right! Wow that's very exciting - blimey that's a long time to wait - how come you're waiting so long?! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
With DCC and a stay alive this should crawl even better. The native home of some of these was RNAD Chilmark which would make for an interesting layout. There was a transhipment setup from the mainline an roads to the narrow gauge which ran up a valley and into a tunnel network etc. There was also quarry track which ran along the road for part of its length. Plenty of bridges and details to model...
Bachmann has some slate wagons (as you British call them) in their Thomas narrow gauge line. Other wagons that would be appropriate for this type of locomotive would be any form of side dump or small flat bed wagon. You might even try to 3d print some with link and pin couplings, then you could use the other weight beams. Be more prototypical. Especially for a mine/tunnel operation. Great job as always.
Sam, I think you're going to have to scenic your test track to make it look like a rock quarry or something fitting for those 009's. I like the fact that those narrow gauge locos are the same portion in scale of the 00's. Great Review Sam!
Sam. There is a Baguly similar to that model at the Bala Lake Railway. It's called 'Bob Davies' After the longest serving Guard on the Bala Lake Railway who died several years ago. Originally, he was a GWR signalman, I think at Wrexham. The diesel was, when built, a 'fire proof' loco and worked at an ammunition works(can't remember which one?). Several years later she was bought by the later Yorkshire Engine Company. The owner of the YECompany, Geoff Briddon, was a member of the BLR and after all the fire proofing was removed she was sold to the BLR a discounted price. At first she was painted all over Grey. Later she was painted Green with yellow ends and Wasp Stripes . When she first arrived at Bala she was only driven by the General Manager, Roy Hardiman, and Roger Hine, Chief Engineer. Because of this, she was nicknamed TRIGGER. This doesn't make sense unless you knew about The 'Lone Ranger' cowboy books and TV series in the 1950s and 60s. Still confused??? TRIGGER was the Lone Ranger's Horse. The Lone Ranger in the TV series was played by ROY ROGERS!!!!
14:03 To put it simply, the Scale is proportionate to the actual model/prototype, Real: Ratio... The gauge is the distance between the rails... for those who want specifics' of the difference. John
Can’t remember when these were announced but it must have been quite a while ago because I have seen very little updates on them, decent review overall Sam, looks like a really nice locomotive from bachmann and a great addition to their narrow gauge range, also think this is the first 009 diesel we have seen.
Suggestion: you should turn the layout into a diorama that is a valley with the n scale track raised up like it’s circling the valley and have the TT track be at the bottom of the valley to make it look like it’s farther away, basically forced perspective. I think it would be a cool setup and it could be brought anywhere you wanted to bring it
That would be awesome! But unfortunately I can only store the layout in a slim space, otherwise I'd definitely do that, great idea! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This is a great step for 009! A new locomotive, and a diesel, for a reasonably affordable price (given the usual 009 prices). Hopefully a good entry point for many into the scale.
Some years ago, I was acquainted with a similar loco on the 2-foot gauge Bala Lake Railway (not sure if it's a Baguley-Drewry). On the BLR, it was (and I believe, still is) a very useful and powerful workhorse, quite capable of hauling passenger trains if required. A lovely model, and handy to have on most 009 layouts, as long as they're set in relatively recent times!
@@SamsTrains Yes, the BLR's loco (Bob Davies) is indeed a Baguley-Drewry, regauged from metre to 2-feet. It used to be light grey, but is now in a smart dark green.
Many thanks - yes, I really did enjoy watching this review! Your comment about the gearing being like a watch mechanism is interesting: actually, people have been making watches smaller than this for a lot longer than the model railway industry has been in existance - so why has it taken so long to manufacture models this intricate? Perhaps - to test the hauling ability - you could have attached it (with bit of thread) to your TT coaches. It is conceivable that, on a preserved line, if they needed their standard-gauge Pullmans to be hauled out of the shed for washing down or something, and no standard gauge loco was available, they might start up their reliable little Baguley-Drewry on the parallel narrow gauge line, to do a bit of 'rope-shunting' ... Look forward to your next video
Great that you can still express your enthusiasm after all of the reviews you have done. It is a gorgeous looking model, and an interesting one in terms of hauling armaments, which would make the rolling stock a bit different!
This would be an instant-buy for my OO9 layouts if only it came with a sound fitted option. I'm not sure I'm game enough to hack it apart to put sound kit into it...
I do love the idea of having a light on it but I think it would be difficult to achieve without making the body removal more difficult. Their is very little space for spring loaded contacts
Sam you should build a very small shunting layout to test how good they are at just that. Tight curves slow speeds and switching even if it only has 1 or 2 switch tracks
Hi Sam have some info about the locos we had some of them at RNAD Trecwn in West Wales 2 ft 6 gauge the depot closed in 1996 then they were transferred to RNAD Dean Hill when that derpot closed they where sold om two went to the Talyllyn Railway where one was named Trecwn
Oh, wow, what an endearing, charming and adorable model Sam 💓 Absolutely lovely little thing. It just does show what high fidelity die-cast can actually do as well. You know, Britain once actually was mastering that industry as being the leader of it in terms of die-cast quality and fidelity; think of Lesney, Mettoy (although a German immigrant), Meccano (Dinky), etc. Cheerio.
I'm tempted to do some narrow gauge, but I hesitate between OO9 and the forthcoming NG7 by Bachmann... I'll see later ! Another thing ive gotta ask is are you planning on creating a full Nscale layout in a similar way to your HO layout, or do you plan to just keep them on this little set of loops for the time being?
Hi Sam & followers, please excuse the completely irrelevant question . Is it better to run models or not? I'm guessing occasional light use is best, but how many hours of use should you expect from a Bachmann, Accurascale, Hornby, Heljan model etc? Could make an interesting show or occasional new criteria? Hours per failure rate?
Sam, the crack pin on the front wheel of my Rapido J70 kept catching on the cylinder crosshead. I tried to bend it out of the way, and ended up breaking the whole assembly... At least it will not have anything to catch on now. 😞
Great engine great review. By the way I suspect you could fit a 009 loop inside your scenic hillside emerging to run alongside your oo. I would love to see that if you ever get the chance.
@@SamsTrains Just on a side note Sam did you know the Thomas toy lines are being removed from multiple retailers in Australia. Some of these retailers have had Thomas toys since the classic ERTL's toys. It looks like the gamble to go 2D Thomas AEG has killed off the brand. The Mattel takeover was back in 2014. If you are going to look at anything Thomas related be really careful. I see the RUclips KIDS AI bots have been set very aggressively now. If there's any sniff of entertaining kids your going to get flagged.
While you’re reviewing n scale all of a sudden the n scale viewers have populated the comments. I’m always impressed by the fine scale pinstripping and lining on models like this. Any thicker would ruin the model
It is possible that some models do not need a flywheel. If the iron armature of the motor is heavy enough then it would act as a flywheel. Food for thought.
@@robinbrowne5419 maybe. But I mean, you’re paying 250 quid, you’d like for every feature to be included, and examples like this show space isn’t as much of a constraint

@@SamsTrains I think if it was integrated into the scenic area you could use a piece of hardboard or even card as a base.
Sam in your book you say the Bachmann Class 40 comes sixth. I can't find the review though. Is this a mistake? Cheers.
Looks Like the shunting tractor if it ran on n scale tracks
It’s due time for a Bachmann Skarloey review Sam
haha yeah!! I do have a Thomas OO9 loco to review soon!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It can't be any worse than the new Bachmann class 08/09 announced today. Can't believe there's another one Sam
Hmmm yeah - I would say there were more urgent models to make than another 08, but it sure will be cool!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video Sam's trains 🚆 👌 😊
Thanks Brian!
@@SamsTrains you're welcome Sam's trains 🚆
Am I the only one that feels that sepretly fitted handrails would have made the model look much better
The model is so small, it most likely would be hardly visible. I have one here and I don’t think it would make much of a difference.
Mine doesn't run as good as Sam's especially at slow speeds, wheels get dirty very quickly
A TCS-KA-N1 stay alive would probably fit.
🎉
There is a Tramfabriek video where this model has sound and a stayalive. It uses a Train-O-Matic stayalive, but Zimo STACO should fit easily as well.
Such a epic loco
Very epic!
Sing along! Bachmann is making the Talyllyn Railway Fleet more or less!
Wow. Quite a collection growing... So when are you getting the Bachmann Thomas range of 009 ? Lol
I already have one I'm waiting to review! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Do you think you could get a big Thomas? The tank engine video
Kinda ridiculous this tiny little engine found a way to fit a flywheel, whilst the big Hornby black 5 couldn’t…
What a little beauty! Sam, you need a bigger layout! As always, great watching your reviews. Cheers
haha I'd love a bigger one - one day!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
PLEASE have a LONG AREA that you Time to Scale at 30%, 50%, 75% and 100% speed
so you can report the Scale Speed
I think that would be interestring
good vid
