I found this form at an airport a year ago - it still contains the same language that it did in 1992. Who would have thought that the United States Government uses taxpayer funds to print millions of copies of the text to a Frank Zappa tone poem?

LOL! Only Frank Zappa would think to equate "have tyou been ever involved with terrorism" great video and even greater artist. Frank Zappa was one of the true great artist of the last 50 years

@cashberg - For the same reason a lot of Frank's music (whether played by himself and a band, other bands/ensembles or in this instance - An extremely non-traditional orchestra) : The Zappa Family Trust.. I understand why Gale is protective concerning Frank's work; but even he said that his band was about "entertainment". To see this work preformed live is very entertaining aside from it's intrigue regarding the compositions and arrangements.

I love this song. It is the actual immigration form you have to fill out to come in the U.S.

What is the song being played at the very beginning? It's not an original right?

  • @PaulStaatsLawrence

@kernasea "We are dumb all over."
The screenplay/movie 'Idiocracy' echoes your comment regarding intellect and reason. To quote the movie.. Rita : "You think Einstein walked around thinkin' everyone was a bunch of dumb shits? Joe: " I never thought about." Rita : "We'll... Now you know why he build that bomb."
Vastly oversimplified, but the point is clear. Thanks for being one "that gives a fuck if what they play is somewhat is somewhat insincere."

One question: do anyone of you get, which song he uses by the "terrorist activities" and why, and also why he did compose "genocide" the way he did? That are only parts which leave me puzzled.

Immigration lawyer here. This is a standard form (formerly) used for people coming to the USA using the Visa Waiver Program. It's to get false answers from terrorists and others--so that when they get arrested they can also on top of anything else be prosecuted in Federal court for lying on the form. True story.

The song is Wild Thing/Louie Louie and the genocide effect reminds me of poison gas, possibly referring to Nazi death camps.

In 1991, the Ensemble Modern orchestra approached Zappa for use of his music for a series of concerts. He invited them to his Laurel Canyon home for rehearsals....all the musicians, many of them German, were understandably bemused and upset by the then US visa application form they had to fill out....stupid questions about moral turpitude and references to nazism. A ridiculous piece of bureaucracy when you think of US' own foreign policy right from the cold war to the end of the 80s. It was ripe for Zappa satire. The musical outbursts (similar to his other song "rhymin' man") and sound effects ridicules the questions and answers. Note the Louie Louie riff at the end of "terrorist activities"....reminding us that even an innocent 1950s song can be under investigation by the FBI...which it was. I think its one of the best examples of silly anarchic comedy ever inflicted on an orchestra.

@@pianobanter thanks for the Louie Louie/FBI clue. For 30 years I was assuming that this was just FZ humor. After all, he quoted Louie Louie so often although rather hinting at stupidity than terrorism
