  • In my helicopter flyover videos of California, lots of commenters have requested a flight over LAX. Los Angeles International Airport is an incredibly busy airport, though less busy during Corona times. One advantage of flying a helicopter is that I can fly directly over LAX at only 1,500 feet. In this video, I fly over LAX, plus El Segundo. Along the way, we spot Mattel Headquarters and watch a jet takeoff from above.

The In-n-Out Burger on Sepulveda (4:31 center of frame) is a great spot to plane watch and enjoy a Double Double! Probably the best thing and it's not even at the airport itself.

LAX is such a famous place. "The red zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only." Maybe LAX is no longer the highest rated airport in 2020, but OMG the history it reflects! I fall in love with Los Angeles all over again every time I watch one of your "Micah Flies" videos. Great job, great video Micah.

i used to work out there a lot, and i stopped flying into LAX and would instead fly into John Wayne, and actually stay in Newport Beach, and just commute up to LA. much much MUCH better experience. i used to time my trips out there to get in on a sunday afternoon, rent a car (NOT a mustang) and drive up to Malibu for an early Sunday evening dinner, drive back to the hotel in Newport and just start my work week like that. Did that for a couple months.

LAX is more of a history thing for me. It reminds me of my childhood. Picking up family and then myself flying in and out. First flight was out of LAX on a an L 1011 to basic training at Ft Knox.
The done was never a tower. It was a restaurant and had an observation deck. The old tower is at the very entrance. Not sure what its used for today.
LAX is the 3rd busiest airport in the world. Its design at the time was thought to be more than enough but it was quickly realized it wasnt big enough. At some point I guess most of it will have to be rebuilt and redesigned.
For me, its just childhood memories most of all.

I've flown over 2 million miles with United, >99% of which was from/to LAX. Once you work out a "plan", it's pretty easy getting in/out/through the airport. I'd rate it 4 out of 5. And it's way, *way* better than it used to be, before the "upgrade" for the '84 Olympics. I've flown the Sepulveda Transition a couple of times, as well as the Shoreline Transition in fixed-wing a few times, and also fixed-wing over the top of SFO. All are pretty amazing. Thanks for the video.

Micah, I love LAX. It's very well organized, it has the Dockweiler sand and Pacific Ocean as a protective "barrier" for take offs and landings, has a cool sign and light pylons in the area. Yeh and it used to have that cool restaurant in the middle area (I forgot the name of it and don't know if that is still there) haven't noticed it lately. Only problem is the sun is in your eyes around dinner time on take offs and landings but I don't think any airport can avoid something like that at sometime during the day.

Yes, that was the Theme Building. It was supposed to resemble a flying saucer when it was built for the new "Jet Age" LAX in the early '60s. Encounter Restaurant was inside and closed down a few years ago. It also had a flying saucer theme to it, with cool lighting and giant lava lamps around the odd shaped bar. The cola/water dispensers were shaped like ray-guns and would make an odd, futuristic sound when used. The elevator also had futuristic sounds and "out of this world" lighting. Above Encounter is an outside observation deck, complete with free telescopes. It was accessible from a separate elevator from the ground floor. It was shut down for years after 9/11 but eventually re-opened for Saturdays and Sundays only, between 10am and 5pm. I doubt it is currently open now with the whole Covid thing. Underneath the structure there was also a small cafe that was mostly frequented by LAX employees. It actually had regular "outside of the airport" prices. It was our little secret. Also, there is an interesting 9/11 memorial before the entrance to the building under the structure, as well as a small memorial plaque to my former colleague, Gerardo Hernandez--murdered in T3 on Nov. 1, 2013. That was a Hell of a day. Micah actually kind of flew over the old tower at around 6:06. It's about 500ft. west of Sepulveda Bl. and it lines up perfectly with the Theme Building and current tower to the west. I really miss working at LAX.

Last time I was at LAX was January 2020 on my way home from the Amazon. LAX is an OK airport. My main complaint is that it doesn't connect to public transit. Most airports in the world, you can take an escalator to regional trains. At LAX, you have to take a bus to downtown and the Metro *still* doesn't go to the airport. The way to do LAX is to arrive way early and then relax in one of the First Class / VIP lounges with some food and a cocktail for a while.

@@MicahMuzio Upon further thought, it would be best if you sent the photo to "airliners.net", as you can provide the better verbiage that might get the photo accepted. Photo acceptance is very difficult. I've been rejected several times for quality photos. You must join (for free), then go through the photo submittal process. I do hope you consider it. I will gladly email you the photo. Many thanks.
