      A school friend of mine had one as his first car in 1990.
      1000cc and 135 section tyres. It was rather amusing watching it drifting around roundabouts in the wet, at 15mph.

    From a driving point of view The Gorgon definitely is much more durable and looks more fun to run. but in the looks department The Lunchbox is a clear winner. This Arma car is in those new ugly boring stylish look. Put The Lunchbox body on the Arma car and you have the best of both worlds.

    Brilliant video! We have been robbed of a summer so far in the UK and it makes our job so much harder! The gorgon is a great truck but let down by parts shortages and stupid pricing of parts. The US market doesn't seem to be having an issue it seems to be a Europe only thing. This needs to get better. The GROM range is also a problem. Expensive parts and upgrade and shortages of the actual cars again. It seems to be ARRMA's way of milking as much money out of the consumer as possible. Something i am finding harder and harder to support... Great vid gav!

I have a midnight pumpkin and it's actually my main runner. I'm not brutal with it but not exactly easy either. It's a very fun truck though. I did a CRP upper lower arm conversion on the front but I screwed the geometry up so it steers terribly. Eventually I'll fix it but the truck is a blast and my dogs love to chase it.

      @@mrlt1 Yes, I agree. I bought an XR311 re-re just because I appreciated the fact that it was Tamiya's first off-road RC car. Driving wise it is fragile and not very good but then I decided to actually make it reasonably good to drive by fitting exquisite metal parts. I look at it and marvel at the quality of the engineering. It is like a piece of artwork! Very interesting video. The Gorgon certainly looks like it handles and performs like a modern RC and is great value for money. I can completely see it providing huge amounts of fun. It might well be a better option for youngsters getting into the hobby but like a lot of modern RC cars they just lack any character and are rather souless. The old Tamiya stuff like the LB, Pumpkin, King Cab, Monster Beetle etc were not just a big part of RC history but a massive element of the 80s in general. It's like real cars, would it be sensible for me to buy a new Mini or a classic Mini? The new one for sure, reliable, mod cons, performance etc but I'd rather have an 80s Mini Mayfair that needs a peg to hold the choke out. Keep up the great work Gav.

    I do have decent amount of different RC from retro to modern, i will still buy the gorgon because of the chassis design, value and specially durability, (not shelf queen) the less i spend on a project and less repair always will be the winner for me, any beginner and pro will love it for the many upgrade, it handling pretty good for a 2wd, as for the lunch box it will be definitely a good display piece, the awesome hard body design and over all look, i would hope Tamiya replace the plastic chassis with newer tougher plastics (this will probably change my mind about it), this lunch box is best suited for collectible display only (without the tons of upgrades), but if i going to use it more, definitely not a great investment for me.

      @@RCKickschannel, I raced my Frog indoors, on wood floors, in 1990 - 91. It was already 8 years old when I started racing it.
      Everyone else was running Manta Ray hybrids, with lots of RW Racing upgrade parts, and then the Top Force, when it was released. Most of the other guys racing didn't even know what the Frog was.
      Eventually during a heat it got pushed into a wall, and the chassis snapped in two behind the front suspension.
      Retired it and decided to try race a Wild One against the 4WD cars.
      I didn't have money to buy a new car, plus my Dad wouldn't let me buy another RC car. I had two, which was one too many as far as he was concerned.
      Rebuilt the Frog in 2000, with obsolete NOS parts I had collected from Model Shops around the UK during the 1990s. I have a new, unpainted original body and two sets of original Frog decals knocking about.
      Left the Frog on display in my parent's office at their home in Ireland.
      Now also got a NIB Frog re-re. Will build it some day.
      My Mum died Friday week ago, and I was back in Ireland for her funeral.
      I brought my original Frog back over to England yesterday.
      Trip down memory lane.
      The original body has holes in it where a neighbour's Cocker Spaniel took a dislike to the car, bit it, and ran off with it in it's mouth.
      And it has Ghostbusters stickers on the body shell, - the first Ghostbusters film was released in 1984 too.

    It has to be said, but the Lunchbox is really just a Hornet on stilts. And it handles like that too.
    From what I've seen of the Gorgon, it's very planted by comparison and doesn't have any of the Lunchboxes weird geometry/dynamics.
    I've never had a Lunchbox and have never had the desire to get one. It came out down here in Aus just after the Monster Beetle, and I think the disappointment I had in that car rubbed off on the Lunchbox.

    I wouldn't be a fan of Tamiya if it weren't for the Lunchbox being my first in 1987. To this day it's still my favorite. Absolute blast to drive and provides hours of histerical lauging. If you find it lacking in precision or durability, you are missing the point entirely. If you want a Lunchbox to beat on and absolutely haul arse, get the MadVan VE. This Gorgon is a throw away toy.

    • @RCKickschannel
      @RCKickschannel  3 месяца назад +1

      Unfortunately, I have never had a Mad Van but I hear good things about them from owners. I was told you have to do a load of upgrades to make them reliable but once done it's a fantastic garden basher. I wouldn't say the Gorgon is throw away, its quality is fine and the simple box section chassis is simple and tough.

    • @Therealjmhinkle
      @Therealjmhinkle 3 месяца назад

      @@RCKickschannel I did all the upgrades just because I can at this point in my life. Were they needed? Definitely not. I've found the new Kyosho stuff to be pretty tough out of the box. My Mad Van and USA-1 have taken some massive crashes that would have broken my old Tamiyas easily. I admit calling the Gorgon "throw away" sounds extreme, but no Arrma RC is going to be sought after 10+ years down the road. They are good for what they are as a basic starter RC, but you either move on to Tamiya for the building and detail aspect of the hobby or one of the other brands for higher level bashing. I don't think it's a fair comparison, but I see the Lunchbox as an entry level Tamiya, but not an entry level RC if that makes sense. The antics it's designed to produce are not meant for entry level hands. BTW, thanks for your awesome channel. It's your fault I ordered the Optima Mid WC last week and it's always awesome to watch your builds.

    I get it.... the Gorgon makes a lot of sense, it’s a lot of “bang for your buck” & very capable..... but that’s partly why i’d Go for the Tamiya. The Aarma is just too competent, part of the thrill of driving a Lunchbox is the fact that it’s so rubbish, it’s a challenge to control & rewarding as a result. The full construction element along with the realistic & highly detailed hard body are further reasons i’d choose Vanessa”s mode of transport 😉

  • @northcanterburylogging3039
    @northcanterburylogging3039 4 месяца назад

    The Gorgon is nice but it definitely has problems. First impressions was great. Then i had steering servo saver problems. And still having peoblems with it steering cause the saver always kicks in.
    Second issue was the clutch constantly slipping. So obviously tighten the adjustment but it still slips like crazy. So in the you have to just tighten it right down. Which it slips again. And these problems were out of the box and still on-going.
    With no solution online or aftermarket parts to solve it. Body shell cracks easy where the solid plastic attaches to the shell.

    • @RCKickschannel
      @RCKickschannel  4 месяца назад +1

      So many RTR cars come with less than ideal servos, not sure why manufacturers don’t just fit appropriate servos but really it’s down to saving money, especially on ultra entry level price point products like the Gorgon. The slipper sounds like a strange one. Have you tried dismantling it to see what the pads are like? It might be worth swapping the pads out if some contaminants have gotten on the pads. That’s not expensive and the place I would start if it’s done up really tight but still slipping. I would also check that it was put together correctly as mistakes do happen in manufacturing so someone could have missed something small but important out. Polycarbonate bodies will always crack and it’s well worth doing the rubber glue and edge tap trick when you get a new body.

      @@RCKickschannel Bang for buck I'm very impressed overall with the design. It's quick and strong. And for a novice it's perfect. No real adjustments an easy to work on. I don't regret getting it at all. Only other issue to watch out for is the screws for motor mounting can pull through the plastic. People over tighten them cause the motor can move. But I've used a fibre washers and haven't had that issue.
      I'm thinking one or two things.
      It was pulling wheelies when I first got it out of the box and the power surprised me.
      On the third battery it started slipping. Figured it needed adjustment but also check for contamination. But seem clean and not worn out. So adjusted but it carried on slipping. I eventually ran out of adjustment.
      Maybe the spring or clutch is weak.
      The servo saver issue seems similar a weak spring maybe. Couldn't get full range but found the servo was lose. It worked better but the servo saver kicks in at around ½ range out of the box. Anyways ordered new parts hopefully it solves the issues.

    Half the fun of Tamiya is you put it together yourself and paint it. You miss out on that part. when you buy a ready to run, you don't learn about how it works. I learned to soldier by having rc cars. If the cars in the 80s were R2R, I don't think thry would have been as popular.

    • @RCKickschannel
      @RCKickschannel  4 месяца назад

      Yep I agree, building a car helps you really understand what’s going on with it and you can then fix it yourself when it breaks. Unfortunately a large chunk of people lack the time to invest in a kit. I do like the ready to assemble idea Arrma did with the kit version as it’s a halfway option that only takes an hour. You can get a clear body to paint yourself so I guess it’s the best of both worlds.

For younger children the Lunchbox has just become so vintage, you can get far superior offerings for the same or less money these days and the Gorgon shows just how far the LB has fallen behind.
