  • It's a strange feeling to share this aspect of my life. I'm taking a break to go back to school, but here's a peek into the part of my life I've kept hidden from the internet for many years. I was asked if I wanted to film my last mission and use it as an opportunity to explain "Multi-Domain Operations" to the public. After much consideration, I decided that this topic (especially the cyber-domain issue) was important and chose to help inform the public.
    My mission was to participate in a missile and torpedo engagement exercise at Pacific Missile Range Facility as part of RIMPAC 2018. RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise) is the largest naval exercise in the world. It's used to test interoperability and the ability to work as an international force.

    I've kept this side of my life off the internet intentionally for 15 years. It's been strange being a dual RUclipsr/Missile Tester, because obviously this side of my life feels very important and the main driver for many of my life decisions. I'm more than just a person who makes videos and puts them on RUclips, and I feel like I'm kind of introducing you to the other side of me with this video. I thought long and hard about putting this online after I was asked if I wanted to film my last mission. I ultimately decided to post this video to let you know that Multi-Domain Operations are real.... and you're in the cyber domain. I didn't understand the full extent of what the implications of this were until I dug into it more. Over the course of the next several videos we're going to explore these cyber issues in a very real way. I hope you'll explore this with me.

      It's always good to strive for an easier, safer, and better option, but deep down every one of us know there has got to be one last wall to break before falling. And each of us want that.
      With great power, comes great responsibility. And you've been very responsible about it. And we're getting smarter about it too. And I hope every single one of us strive for a smarter and more responsible way for it.

      @Bobby Fisher The lack of "Political Grace", as described so eloquently by Destin in this video, is precisely the most important issue facing Americans today. If we go on as we have been, attacking each other simply for stating a point of view, without reasoned discourse and at least a minimum of mutual respect--which, sadly, you have demonstrated so vividly--then the social contract will be broken and civil strife, if not civil war, will be the outcome. This is just my opinion. I have others, but political grace prevents me from airing them here.

I truly believe that if America does not get its sense of unity back, the spirit of unity and american pride we had back in WW1 and WW2, then we will crumble from within. Thank you Destin and General Brown for drawing our attention to the new domains of battle. Absolutely.

    • @TheGrumbliestPuppy
      @TheGrumbliestPuppy 4 года назад +19

      @@PatrickBenoit10 The real problem is people aren't taught how to vet sources. Small, independant and hyperpartisan tabloids/blogs are just as terrible as the big cancers like CNN and Fox. The most boring sources are usually the most credible, like Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, but people don't want to read anything that doesn't consistently support their "side".

    • @JWPSmith21
      @JWPSmith21 4 года назад +11

      @@TheGrumbliestPuppy A large part is unwillingness to compromise or trying to understand one another. People are pulling further and further apart. Politics has been becoming more and more authoritarian right for decades and decades. Now, it's become you're either extreme authoritarian right, or you're against it. There can't be compromise when even the middle ground is at such an absolute extreme. There's no wiggle room for compromise. It got there from compromise after compromise not being fair between the two sides, but rather slightly favoring one side over the other. Time and time again over a very long time.
      I honestly don't know how to resolve that. Theoretically I do, but practically I don't. People want to compromise, but there's no room to do that anymore. Even most of the people in the comments section here are claiming that it's this issue or that, all while actually showing that they see other Americans as the problem, treating others almost as if they're the ones who should be stamped out, instead of the misinformation and misunderstanding. It's an "us vs them" mentality between fellow Americans, as Destin mentioned in his own video. The comments section are immediately turning to that, even if they don't say it directly.

    "Political Grace" a fascinating concept in this day and age, an oxymoron if you wil, but where the politics of our times have proved to fail us as a people, it's in our society where we will witness our victory or defeat. Today's access to global communications In the hands of powerful influential minds is the real threat to our country's security and future, we have been targeted as a society and videos like this are needed more than ever to start lowering the country's temperature and start letting reason, respect and civility take the wheel in our social interactions. I remember growing up in the 80s and I remember what a huge deal being an American meant back then, it was about chanting the phrase "America #1" with pride, it was about being the best at everything we did always representing the red white and blue no matter who you voted for or what part of the country you lived in.

      I really want to work more on unity. People get so worked up over the silly little things, and they don't recognize how alike they are to the people they're trying so hard to fight with. I feel like most of the people out there who are getting loud are putting a lot of effort into this "fight" because they want to help, and they want to make the world a better place. I think that when we fight at odds with each other, we don't make progress, we just stagnate in a kind of social tug of war. Instead, I would like to be more encouraging, even when that means encouraging someone to do something I wouldn't myself.

      It's honestly very similar to what developers do when creating programming frameworks. It's a combination of trying to simplify, compartmentalize, and label situations people doing similar work would consider common sense to ensure they can be communicated consistently to everyone in their workplace regardless of where they are coming from, and partly job insurance because it makes their work impenetrable to an outsider, requiring training to really understand. Every time you step into a new framework you have to learn a whole new language for the same things, and the same is true in the military. The difference is in the military there is overlap with everyday life, which sometimes makes things difficult for career military personnel (for whom basic training was usually the start of the first job training in their lives) when they step back into the civilian workforce.
      Hopefully one positive outcome of people like the General pushing branch interop is breaking down the decades-old buzzwords (because they aren't entirely the same between branches) and using more common sense language where appropriate. In the meantime, again just like in development, the most successful people will be the ones who can easily step from one language/framework to another and see past the words.
      Disclaimer, I'm not military, this is just my perspective from observing friends/family/coworkers who are.

    1st don't divide. I believe division occurs 'cause lack of 'departmental' communication & personnel complacent-ness & procrastination.
    2nd, if division occurs, become aware INSTANTLY simultaneously producing or increasing communication IMMEDIATELY. This video exemplifies this premise since there's much more awareness & 'on the same page' in real time amongst the 'domains' mentioned. This is not cool. This is not something to celebrate. It's something that should make us remember what war is and even though sometimes necessary/inevitable, it should never be a goal for anyone involved and it needs to be remembered how many lives have been lost on both sides that sustain the necessity of this profession that is at odds with a compassionate person's moral compass. That is the danger of the military industrial complex. When there is financial incentive for war, there will be more war for lesser and lesser reasons.

    War, war never changes. In the year 1945, my great-great grandfather, serving in the army, wondered when he get to go home to his wife and the son he never see. He got his wish, when the U.S. ended WWII by dropping an atomic cloud on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The world awaited Armageddon, instead, something miraculous happened. We began to use atomic energy as a nearly limitless source of power. People enjoyed luxury once thought in the realm of science fiction. Domestic robots, fusion powered cars, portable computers. Then, in the 21st century, people awoke from the American dream. Years of consumption led to the shortages of every major resource. The entire world unraveled. Peace became a distant memory. It is now the year 2077, and we stand on the brink of total war, and I am afraid, for myself, for my wife, for my infant son, because if my time in the army taught me one thing; is that war, war never changes.

    Wait, do these military types not consider Economic warfare a thing? I am honestly surprised that wasn’t mentioned as It really is the frontline of every conflict.
    Much as I appreciate the US, our military spending is absurd, gov spending in general is absurd. US debt is likely to be unserviceable in a handful of years (unless the fed performs more economic wizardry which is likely). There are also the dangers of inflation (which has massively devalued the dollar over 100 years) and the current debt bubble which appears to make the economy more fragile than ever.
    Really love the content on this channel but I seriously doubt our current path is sustainable. Seeing the Military spend massive amounts on fancy weapons does not make one feel great about seeing failing infrastructure in the homeland.
    I admit it disturbs me to meet 17 year olds who have never known their country to not be at war.
    I understand there are no easy answers and everything is a compromise of some form, but I don’t know that global warmongering is the best course of action. I also admit that the world is very complicated and I don’t assume to have all the information or the answers.

      @@workman88 this is a common belief but also commonly dead wrong. Private sector companies develop military tech. But military tech is at least 10-20 years behind what’s available to the private sector. Military tech has to be battle hardened and excessively reliable. This alone means testing has to ensue for over a decade just to make it field ready.
      Virginia class submarines, the pinnacle of advanced submarine tech, are built with obsolete tech on board, like 30 year old obsolete tech. Then immediately after being commissioned are pulled into shipyard and “updated” with the “modern” tech, which is 10-20 years obsolete already.
