I saw this opening performance of Tosca with Placido Domingo. My dad who was a member of metropolitan guild took me. We were on the floor about 40 rows back. Lauren Becall was about 20 rows in front of us. It was such a memorable event.
MARAVILLOSO!!!!, el mejor cantando el repertorio de tenor lírico-spinto!!! de lejos!!!. Él ha sido (junto con Kraus y Corelli) mi modelo de tenor a seguir!!!.Viva Domingo!!!
I'm so glad I was able to get this 1985 Met production on DVD new. It's a great production! Behrens was actually quite moving and vocally more than competent. I don't typecast. Domingo was his usual vocally brilliant self, turning in yet another uniquely nuanced interpretation of Cavaradossi. His E lucevan through O dolci mani and to the end is a fresh and compelling performance, moving and memorable. MacNeil's voice is especially golden smooth and, refreshingly, he has a few better than average acting moments. The Set by Zeffirelli was epic -- even by Met standards. It drew its own applause, rightly so. His production and direction was above par. It's a true pity that the vandals of today eschew the aesthetics that informed Franco's designs. Paz y salud.

This is from the 1985 recording at the Met with Hildegard Behrens as Tosca; great DVD!
Right in front of Madonna too.
