  • Brian Rix was a famed actor and record-breaking producer of stage plays - particularly at London's Whitehall Theatre.
Rix and his family lived beside Richmond Park in London, and in 1977 he entertained Valerie Singleton in his garden.
He spoke about his work, how the garden has evolved since he bought it back in 1958, and his passion from planting trees - much to the chagrin of his wife, Elspet Gray, who was more keen on flowers.
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, Wednesday 28 January 1977.

So many people debating in which Summer it was filmed, when it says in the description it was first broadcast in January 1977, so it's not hard to work it out.

Lawn is still not recovered after the drought of 1976 - or maybe this was _filmed_ in 1976. My grandparents' garden in Surrey was quite similar, having a large lawn bordered with mature trees. The hot, dry summer ravaged the grass in the same way, revealing an earlier parterre arrangement that had been covered up by new topsoil.

Maybe don't mow it so short and it will be less stressed. The lawn has likely been resown since if its been dying for so long.

Definitely 76 - look at his tan and it was much wetter in 77 - rained on the Silver Jubilee in southern England. We often laughed at funny circumstances at home , like people in and out of rooms on the landing, and would say ‘ooh just like a Brian Rix farce’ great clip!

I think it's the summer of 1976. She asked when did you move here, he said 1958, so she said so 18 years then.
I did think it looked as though it had been a hot summer at the point of filming this. More 76 than 77.
There's no way on god's earth that Valerie Singleton is going to get simple maths wrong! 👍

I assume like most programmes, they are usually filmed one year and released for viewing the next.

Good, old-fashioned libertarian. People aren't like this now.
