Rainbow Cyclone was most likely never considered to be her name. Oops! 33:21 - The umbrella saddle thing actually does technically appear in the show. Although to be fair it was only seen like once lol.
I actually really like that Pinkie ended up an earth pony and Fluttershy, a pegasus. It was an interesting subversion of what you’d normally expect, and it was cool to see the two of them adopt traits from their formally intended pony types anyway (Fluttershy being really good with animals and Pinkie being really bouncy and flighty)
Yes i agree!! I always get a little sad when people redesign them with their original concepts because of how they take away that cute little contrast.
Yeah, I think it's realistic and generally good for a kid's show. Sometimes one has a physical attribute that doesn't quite match up with the way they interact with the world, and normalizing that is pretty cool.
And the fact that fluttershy fell out of a hot air balloon (I forgot the name of the episode but it was when rainbow dash went to training camp for the wonder bolts and met lightning dust. Lightning dust made her friends fall out of the balloon) and they were all saved, fluttershy was falling with everyone else and was blushing bc she could fly. She forgets she’s a Pegasus sometimes ☺️
Im sorry but seeing lauren herself say that fluttershy is an earth pony at heart reminds me of the sad monologue fluttershy goes on in the mentally advanced parody, episode 14. She says, "you were born with wings but you were never really meant to fly." Makes it 100 times more crushing lol...
Yes, its a bit sad, when you consider it like that, but at the same time, i think that’s part of why I like that she was made a Pegasus in the end. It’s a nice way to show someone who lives their life differently than what they were expected too (Fluttershy being a Pegasus who does enjoy flying that much, stay on the ground most of the time, and has a strong connexion to earth), and that even if its not always easy, its totally fine. Her being a Pegasus didn’t stop her from being herself despite expectation. It’s an interesting thing. I also like the contrast between her and Rainbow Dash. Both of them are Pegasus, but their relation to that identification are very different. Even their way of flying is different. It make them even more unique.
@@aaazzz8324 i think it's definitely a great way to represent disability and mental illness in a kids show. I love characters like fluttershy and scootaloo that represent two different sides of not being able to fly. Like for me personally, i struggle pretty hard with EDS and arthritis, which makes doing normal physical tasks that other people do normally pretty difficult. Some days i have to actually crawl out of bed because my hip is dislocated or my muscles wont contract. Same with like, struggling to leave the house because of personal fears or mental illness. Characters like fluttershy are nice in a way thats not particularly direct but you can still make inferences and connections in your own way like that. ...i am a yellow horse. Haha :" )
@_meldrop_ yes, I was really watching the Flight to the finish épisode yesterday, where Scootaloo learns to accept her own inability to fly, and I thought the message her is similar to the one with fluttershy. For a show like FIM that's widely focused on accepting differences between each other, it's yet another great way of showing different kinds of what it means to be different
I loved the concept that unicorns were astronomy freaks and that they learned their knowledge from the stars. As an astronomy freak myself, I'm sad this didn't get greenlit. Unicorns are still my favorite kind of ponies in the show tho. Imagine being able to communicate through moving stars
Agreed! I love the idea of astronomy being a big focus for unicorns, it really enhances the wizard/magic theme of their tribe. I think a little bit of it still got into the show, since many of the scholarly unicorns in the show have astronomy motifs. I'm thinking about Sunburst, Starswirl, Twilight of course, even Starlight Glimmer and Sunset Shimmer have astronomy-themed names.
Missing context: - The reason why Hasdro lost the trademarks to most G1 ponies was because most of their names were common words. That's why from G3 onwards the poines' names became more "nonsensical" or they were given surnames. -The name Fluttershy came from a G3 pony, and the scrapped name Meadowbrook was later reused as a mender of the Pillars of Equestria. - The name Rarity came from the unicorn princess from G3. Adding to this fact, in the episode "Hearth's Warming Eve" they made reference to the unicorn kingdom from G3, Unicornia. If there is more information that i missed, please reply to this comment!
Majesty was originally the inhabitant of Dream Castle, and came with the playset along with her pet dragon, Spike. Additionally, all the princess ponies had their own dragons that they were bundled with.
I'm actually glad that they gave Pinkie's wings to Fluttershy. First off, by making Fluttershy a pegasus, it greatly juxtaposes with Rainbow Dash and her constant flying. It really shows just how differently pegasi can opt to utilize their wings. Also with Fluttershy, it makes it all the more special when she does choose use her wings more often. Hurricane Fluttershy displays that amazingly. Secondly, pegasus pinkie pie, while fitting, might have been a bit too chaotic. I think she still works great as an Earth Pony. Still, it's always neat to see what the show looked like back during the development process.
Shoppe is pronounced the same as shop, the added e is just how they used to spell things. It doesn't have an accent like é and there are two p's, so we know the o diesnt affect the e, so it would not be pronounced differently like 'shope' would be. You will find old shops still use this spelling in the countryside, at least in the UK where they may genuinely date back to when shop was spelled shoppe (or at least they want to give the impression that they do).
Rainbow dash is supposed to be the fast one. If Pinkie had wings. She’d be way faster. Hell even as an earth pony Rainbow Dash couldn’t outrun her. She was always right behind her
@@kittytrot I guess giving her wings might not make that much of a difference. She can already fly short distances without them so being a pegasus would just allow her to keep flying.
@@DJOctoboti do not think thats true bc rainbow dash cant walk as fast as she flies so pinkie pie would make a triple rainboom if she went full power mode while flying
I still think that the version with the earth pony Pinkie and pegasus Fluttershy is better. The wings make Fluttershy look like an angel, and all of Pinkie crazy actions raise a lot of questions, since Pinkie is just an earth pony.
also being a pegasus is a pretty big part of fluttershy's character. her whole thing is that despite being a pegasus she had more of a connection with the group and doesn't like flying much
There’s a fun grimdark called “Truth Be Told” that uses the old concepts in a fun way. Essentially Surprise starts invading Pinkies body and goes about changing things to fit in with the original vision
Ya when I heard that Pinky Pie's name was originally gonna be named "surprised" I peiced 2 and 2 together and realized "so that's where the creators of the grimdark comics got the name 'Surprise". One of the comics is still going on to this day, they released part 62 to the comic on RUclips a couple days ago, it seems the series is far from over. The series is called "Diagnosis: Surprise" and the creator is named "J5A4".
I was thinking back to this grimdark while watching and I was accepting that I wouldn't find it again because of me forgetting the title oml dude you're my savior LOL
I was a G3 MLP girl. Even before G4, I wondered why a pony called "Rainbow Dash" didn't have any affiliation with speed. I appreciate her upgrade to a tomboyish pegasus speedster with her old personality essentially given to Rarity.
This was never really explored in any of the cartoons, but the toy packaging for G3 Rainbow Dash said that she liked to ride on rainbows, so that explains her name. Some books and comics also portrayed her as more adventurous and daring, but not to G4’s extent.
I was a G3 MLP girl and I remember looking at the promos for MLP season 1 and thinking “WhAt HaVe ThEy DoNe To My PiNkIe PiE aNd RaInBoW dAsH??? 😱😱😱 ThEy’Ve RuInEd EvErYtHiNg!!! 😡😡😡” Boy, I was a total fool 😅 Especially considering the reboots we have nowadays 👀
Really like the idea of Zecora being a more important mentor character, she's one of my favorite characters and i wish there was a little more of her. Also still really like that pitch idea of Lauren Faust of the Milky Way toyline and cartoon, I wish she had been able to actually release it at some point (she actually had a lot of cool ideas for projects that were never picked up over the years, like a movie about Medusa for Sony and a really cute pitch for a cartoon about a witch, plus her original idea for the DC super hero girls that i liked more than what was actually made...)
Yeah, what they did with Hal Jordan was infuriating and stupid, when there was an easy out available;"Guy Gardner"the designated a hole g.l.! Not to mention they basically give superboy prime's personality to supergirl, turned bumblebee into fluttershy 2.0,and wonder woman is the movie knuckles/pre ragnarok Thor. It's like Lauren Faust learned the opposite of Equal Fights, a p.p.g. episode she wrote!
There was so much passion put into it. And the show just being puppet-animation/2D made it so eeeach little things could be designed to perfection! It's so fascinating. I hope Hasbro will go back to this once the 3D show dies...
@jamesolszewski3782doubt. They’ve already made over 60 episodes of it. They can only go on for so long before little kids get bored of the hyperactive nonsense.
@@atlasthephuckingwolf9419 Sometimes I wish MLP had the same treatment Transformers have: Every generation lives 3-4 years with their own cartoon which always bring a new point of view or reinvention to classic "Good and Evil robots fighting each other" formula, where some cool ideas become an important part of future generations' lore. G4 and G5 situation is the same as with Transformers Prime and its "kinda sequel" Robots in Disguise. I hope this phase will over one day and MLP will get its own "Cyberverse"
The layouts, backgrounds and character designs were homage to the 1960’s cartoons like Hanna-Barbera, Chuck Jones, UPA, and Jay Ward among, and Kling who also did animation for the “Intermission” snipes that you see in drive-in movie theaters back in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
But sadly, “Milky Way Galaxy Girls” never made it as a series. So Lauren Faust scrapped it and came up with her idea that she had MLP toys as a kid, and she never read any of the Dr. Seuss’ books because of the illustrations which were inspirations for this TV show, and the stylings that look like it was done by DePathe-Freling Productions (aka DFE).
If Lauren crowdfunded it I'm sure lots of people would be on board (idk about the legality of it tho, Hasbro or whatever could still technically "own" it despite it not being a real product yet)
i like to think if they kept the saddles it wouldnt be for humans but the ponies pets. spike, angel, gummy, etc. would be able to sit on them. it wouldve given hasbro a opportunity to make more interactive playsets that have pony pets wihth like. magnets for someting.
@@TobbyMLPhey, i wanted to give you a video idea. You know the episode "Pinkie Apple Pie"? Yeah the one providing Slender-Pony. Can you do some research about how it came to be?
Im glad Pinkie didn't keep the wings. Her chaotic bouncing is more impressive, and Fluttershy's flying contrasts nicely with Dash's, considering the latter has her magic concentrated in flight (like Twi with magic), while the latter has in concentrated more in her special talent (like Pinkie vs AJ)
I think I heard or read somewhere that one alternate name for Nightmare Moon was Discord, but Hasbro didn't like it since they didn't think kids would understand it. Only for Season 2 to come around and Lauren to make ANOTHER villain named Discord.
Yeah, and if i remember well, they had the word “discord” being explained as the character was introduced, so even if the kids didn’t understand before, they were able to learn about it.
@@aaazzz8324 yep, at the start of the episode they had Cheerilee teaching the class what the discord statue represented (and thus explaining the word as well)
It's really interesting to rewatch early episodes. The subtle differences in small things are so cool to see. Like in at least the first episode, (not sure when it changed) Twilight's magic was just sparkles instead of the color and aura-like thing around her horn(?) (its hard to explain but Twilight picks up Spike after meeting Fluttershy in the first ep and you can see this there) I've also noticed the lack of background music and sound effects compared to later episodes. It's almost funnier in a way, and definitely calmer. I like both ways though. Also I love Twilight's personality in earlier episodes, something about her is just so silly idk anyways i just wanted to talk about this bc i love noticing silly things like that :3 this was a very interesting video!!
My little pony friendship is magic was awesome and the thumbnail reminds me of a mix of it and my little pony 'n friends, which makes sense considering FIM took a lot of influence from 'n friends, from character personalities, characters including villians, and intirer arcs. My favorite example is the CMC and Danny Williams. Also Cozy Glow kinda Reminds me of a corrupt version of Megan Williams.
And not only that, the background layout looks a lot like the UPA cartoons from the 1950’s and 1960’s where Mister Magoo was the main character of the series.
7:08 I deadass said to my partner "which one is better" and he was like "the one on the left is more iconic" and I'm like yeah better contrast between the hair and skin. Then I told him about the OG dash and he was like "wtf"
i love how the first concept of Fluttershy being an earth pony and Pinkie being a pegasus, as now we see Fluttershy has wings but barely flies and Pinkie jumps high a lot
when you watch the show, you really feel the change of pinkie pie's wings. as a kid who didnt yet grasp the nuance of character personalities showing by the way they moved, i always thought it was odd how fluttershy was never flying with rainbow dash when the mane 6 were walking around, afterall they were the two pegasus, arent they supposed to fly? even if it isn't the intended vision, and this in particular brings mixed reactions because some do agree with the original designs, i think pinkie being grounded and fluttershy being able to fly is very charming. it shows that, despite their especies that supposidely dont fit them, they are still able to shine in their own way and do what makes them happy even if it doesnt "fit" their circumstances.. when you look at rainbow dash, applejack, or twilight, you really can't separate their species from their personalities and aspirations, but with pinkie and flutter that's more muddled and open. i think that's very appliable to children in mature subjects that we wouldnt even expect, such as following a career that is looked down upon/not what your parents want/overall unavailable, partaking in another culture that isnt your family's, and so on. youd think that kids wouldnt grasp that nuance but trust me, fluttershy not being enough of a pegasus lived rent free in my mind through the entirety of middleschool lol, and now i get to make some pretty conforting hindsight,
lauren faust's obsession with having every non pony race represent some kind of minority race is so weird to me 😭 so much was removed and yet it still seeped into s1 with zecora and the buffalos. same with the weird american history insertions lol
Yeah someone really needed to talk to Lauren about using indirect metaphor to represent diversity and intolerance rather than trying to draw one-to-one comparisons between real and fictional groups 😅
@@bogboybogboybogboyb I honestly get the feeling she intended for the ponies to all represent just white people given how painfully obvious she made it when a character wasn't white 😭
@@colorbar.s yeah for sure and really, having all the different quadriped animal types representing different cultures would have been fine if she just did some original world building to create fantasy cultures. But drawing really clear direct lines between the main heros being white people, the mystical foreign zebras being black people, the aggressive territorial oxen being native americans,,,, gets so messy so quickly 😰
Milkway and the Galaxy Girls seems so fun and diverse, and i would love to see it get developed further. definitely not just because there’s an alt, starry, alien, and galaxy character.. /nsrs
Man it's so sad I only got into it when G4 was already over... I had the same problem I have with anime, namely that MLP:FiM rotted away on my "to-watch"-list for years, and now it's one of my favourite shows. Sadly this means I missed a lot of the community, most of it actually, and G5 is sadly a complete disappointment...
G4 is still chugging along, just look at LittleShy's "top 10 pony videos" series on RUclips. The most recent month even had to name several honorable mentions because there was way more than 10 good pony videos. Agreed G5 is a disappointment, I'd rather watch G1 than G5.
@@noseboop4354 I'll check that out, thanks. I do see new stuff every once in a while but it seems to just be the last death rattle of a dying empire, especially with the community split caused by G5. Blind loyalty vs G4 purists vs people who just want a good show.
Glad someone else out there sees my point of view, MLP:FIM was a success because it clearly had peoples heart and soul put into it. The scripts and concepts took time and effort and the characters where written perfectly. The fandom, although messy at times, is comprised of people who aren't judgmental and support an idea of a peaceful world. G5 is well...a definition cashgrab, it tries to use the success of g4 as a backbone even though the timeline is pretty screwed. It's very confusing to understand how g4 timeline turned into g5 timeline. The ponies are also given modern technology and social medias in which I feel like they could go without. The designs are also very different, like how did the unicorns evolve into having different colored horns from their bodies and why? Continuity isn't there and I feel like it's just a way to sell toys to little kids, not to mention that they try to throw some recognizable characters in there like Twilight Sparkle to get people to watch, and like I said before, with no continuity or context to the timeline for it to even make sense why characters like Twilight Sparkle would even exist in that universe. And, although Lauren was let go after season 2, she was a good writer to kick start the show. G5 feels like it was written by a soulless corporation trying to piggy back on an old show's success. I was intentionally willing to give G5 a chance, although I do have a fear of change and the 3D designs weren't all that cute, I was willing, but it majorly let me down.
@@AngelVazquez-vs9xp very sad indeed but I beileve this fandom is sorta like undertale, it may be long gone from the days when the fandom was seen everywhere, but there are those who'll stick around, just like me 😁
As a kid, I did have the perception of queen's being evil, but I always found it odd that Celestia wasn't one, even more when Queen Chrysalis was revealed.
Chrysalis having the queen title makes sense actually, Changelings (both pre- and post-reform ones) had a major bug swarm theme and if I remember correctly, she not only ruled over them, but also was their biological mother, much like a queen is to bees or ants.
It’s really fascinating to see all the process they wen through before achieving the final result. As someone working in the creative field (graphic design), it’s always a nice reminder that great result takes times, effort, and a lot of back and forth between minor correction, major changement, experimentation, tests and errors.
Some time ago, I was also researching this and I read the entirety of the My Little Pony Adventures show bible, it was super interesting and fascinating to see. I loved this video as well, because there was a bunch of stuff I suprisingly didn't know!
I really want to know what led to Hasbro losing all those trademarked names. It's names for their own company's products! How do you lose trademarks for your own company, when you're a multimillion, if not multibillion dollar company?!
Copyright names have an expiration date, and if Hasbro don't continuously use that name for their products they lose the copyright. There's probably more to it, but that's the usual gist.
@@freshcupofangst so instead of just using the names without copyright, they would rather make entirely new characters with names that they had previously trademarked?? wow hasbro REALLY wanted to copyright those names...
@@samurai_ionian They're not in the wrong for wanting to copyright these characters and making new trademarked names. You can't exactly sell an official product of a character if their name isn't trademarked, and that would defeat the entire purpose of a toyline. They could have legal rights only within the geographic areas where they operate, which means the characters would be used in any way by other companies and Hasbro could do nothing about it if the company was not within their geographic area (basically other countries). It also risks the characters they created being trademarked by someone else, and that person or company could essentially steal the characters, and without the proper trademarks Hasbro could do nothing about it and would have to stop using them. This would obviously be bad for the show, because if while the show was running someone suddenly claimed ownership of one of the characters, which they did not even create, and trademarked it, Hasbro could lose the character if they don't have any court-valid evidence proving they own it. If they lost the court case, then they'd have to remove the episodes featuring that character and rework the show, or scrap it entirely. It's just easier and not a legal mess to make new names that you can trademark and copyright, without the risk of losing that trademark due to it being a common word or name.
when the ponies were different colors they looked like the pics from those bootleg color page apps edit: WHAT THE HELL I HAVE 90 LIKES NOW?? WHATS NEXT IMMA HIT 100? edit 2: i got 125 likes... thanks sm guys :) edit 3: ZOO WEE MAMA 132 LIKES WHEN WILL WE REACH 200?
Twilight Sparkle was originally Twilight Twinkle in the early stages, but they changed to simply Twilight Sparkle, because Twilight Twinkle was a silly name. Fluttershy was originally Posey from G1 and Rosedust was a Flutter Pony from G1 which was the inspiration for Fluttershy.
I've also heard that Lauren Faust was really gunning for Twilight with no aforementioned, but it couldn't happened due to copyright reasons with the Twilight series.
I just wanna add to the potential reasons for scrapping the saddle thing : Hasbro as a company HAS to know that the kids who love their products would *want* to dress up like their favorite characters, and as someone who had a baby cousin going through a horse kid phase take the saddle off their big horse toy to put on their own face and run around... Yeah it's probably best to not potentially encourage more of that. In its a pretty cool idea visually, but in the context of having things kids might want to emulate I gotta say it's something that's better off dropped.
I kinda like how the saddles were like accessories and soon went out of style by season 2. It’s like in our world. Season one have saddles but use as accessories instead of clothing and I find that way better.
Well, now that we're living in a time where we HAVE to entertain every stupid whim that crosses a person's mind, otherwise we're being "intolerant", people running around in horse saddles would probably be considered "stunning and brave" by many.
@@thethrashyonefuck are you on about? You ARE aware of your fandom's rep considering your pfp are you not? I don't think the MLP:FiM fandom gets to say ANYTHING about other people, when it comes to things like making fools of themselves.
omg starsong was literally my most favorite character growing up before 2010's and I was always wondering why she never showed up in G4 and seeing that she was probably maybe going to be in in at 1:06 gives me at least SOME clarity that she wasn't forgotten😭
omg i loooove princess lunas beta designs!! al of them are super cute and princess selena really fits the gentaler and meek vibe they were going for at the very begining with her first apperence in the show. i also think pinkie pie would have really fit being a pegasis and im a little sad she got bumped for fluttershy. i guess thats why fluttershy never really acted like a pegasis or used her wings very often even when rainbow dash would be flying in the same senerio. i think they only do flying stuff in poses when they needed her to be symetrical but thats it so it makes a lot of sence why now
I liked Pinkie being made into an earth pony. It made some of the gags for her a little better, like how in Griffin the Brush Off she would do literally anything she could to catch up to Gilda and Dash
Loved the full recap! I've heard some of these details from different sources, but here it's all collected together in one video which is super useful.
I love Laurens work all of it! So much! Gotta say tho, while I see the idea for pinki with wings makes sense, I adore the Pegasus Fluttershy we got. Fluttershys name makes more sense with that anyway, and her being a Pegasus connected her to rainbow and contrasted her shy persona, it was good to see that a Pegasus could be very shy, and although she was shy, she could be brave.
Originally, nightmare moon was called discord (they used the name discord for that draconeqqus) Princess celestia was originally called queen celestia, but the name queen was more used for villains
i actually read a really interesting grimdark fic about this. basically pinkie retains memories from the original (concept) designs of the characters and becomes set on remaking the world into what it was originally meant to be. it’s called “truth be told” and its really cool, i definitely recommend reading it ^^
Seeing that one sketch of twilight with a pentagram cutie mark I can't help but be reminded of a certain other demonic unicorn Faust created later I wonder if those sketches were an inspiration for her
Looking at this artwork it's like something you would see in a Video Game Concept Art Menu as in-game Unlockables and see some Scrapped Beta Ideas that the player could imagine and wish some were in the Final Game.
Fancy Meeting You Deer sounds like a good concept for a Tarzan/Jungle Book episode. You could also get a funny fish-out-of-water character for later when everything is established for Twilight and the viewer and have him or her visit occasionally. Just get rid of the accent thing.
I actually would have liked to see a episode where the Maine 6 when to a alternate dimension/universe and in it was the beta designs and such like that
It's kinda funny to me to see the saddle prototype designs, because a lot of the toys eventually did come with saddles to decorate your ponies with. I never liked them, so I threw them to the side whenever I played or displayed my pony toys 😂
I know I already commented but I wanted to mention that having the role, good traits, and bad traits of a character in their description is a genius idea when working on a story and I’m definitely going to include that when making characters from now on
This is the first video in a long time that ive actually sat and watched completely through without getting bored or checking other apps, RUclips has been so dull lately.
@11:07 so basically even in the concept days of MLP:FIM Lauren Faust thought that Applejack was already perfect as is! 🍎 💯 🐴 Although seeing how Applejack was already a G1 pony from the 80's make me wonder. What came first? The pony or the cereal? 🥣🍎
I’m stoned so don’t listen to me but my boyfriend said that the narrators voice sounded like an Asian character from South Park and I can’t unhear it, I’m sorry. Anyways I really enjoyed your analysis, great video.
my personal favorite was pinkie's early design, i really like the idea of her being a pegasus. it gives the idea of her being free, being able to fly wherever she wanted like a bird. i think that idea fits her character really well because she's so free spirited and fun. the idea of fluttershy being an earth pony also fits her better because she is associated with animals and nature.
I agree Pegasus Pinkie would fly over head and rain confetti from the sky. And she could put glitter all over her wings so when she flaps them, sparkles fly everywhere. Pegasus Pinkie is OP but very fitting.
One of the ponies in the concept art made by the other artist had a traditional unicorn inspired look! That means all those fanmade redesigns that gave unicorns those long tails could've actually become canon in another universe lol!
u do such a good job of giving out all the info in a very interesting consumable way and it doesnt feel all scattered thank u!! im gonna binge ur channelll
I find it funny that the beta version of MLP G4 looks better than what G5 will ever be, i hate the G5 art style, it also seemed the beta G4 story also made more sense than the G5 story.
You'll find it even funnier when you look at the beta version of G5. Sunny was supposed to be a grease monkey mechanical tinkerer like Donatello from TMNT. And the Lighthouse was more like a mad scientist's secret lair.
This is more G4 concept art/prototype material than what we were shown. Lauren's Concept art have so much charm. 27:06 Twilight hiding her identity as a Unicorn is interesting. It will end on the morale like in Boast Boaster. 31:25 The Pinkie Sense idea should be keep as a short.
So they went with the background and layouts with character designs that looks a lot similar to the 1950’s and 1960’s cartoons, and the timeline was F’ed up. I thought that this show took place in the 1910’s and 1920’s and the final episode was set in the 1940’s when WW2 was going on.
That is actually interesting how applejack - the most traditional pony in ponyville from the most traditional Apple family is also a design which stayed true to the 80s series And no wonder why I loved the show so much, there was so many thought put into it ❤❤❤
Posey from G5 is basically Posey from I think G2 but with her mane tied up!! this is more suprising then the fact that Applejack got like two changes in her final design compared to the first design!!
1:13 why is dr insaneo pointing at the sky with a Christmas keyboard with the 11th Doctor crossed with buddy the elf next to him while Indiana jones watches in the background
33:26 Uh, that is how ponies use umbrellas. Rarity uses this EXACT asset in in S02E01, The Return of Harmony I, at approximately three and a quarter minutes in -- to keep clean from the chocolate milk rain. I also recall Twilight wearing a saddlewear-esque piece of clothing in Winter Wrap Up, where she tries to get dressed too early. But that makes sense as Spike is small enough to ride her.
For G4 I wish Fluttershy was at least part earth pony, like a Pegasus with some earth pony ancestry which would explain her affinity to earth, animals and plants and preference for being on the ground over the sky, weather and flying. Also I wish Earth Pony magic was more well obvious and explored in the series. I do assume the Earth Ponies could improve the fertility and growth of plants more so than a Pegasi or Unicorn could and that they would have more knowledge on agriculture due to their ancestors farming and passing down such knowledge.
I remember I was a bigger fan of g4 when I was younger but would occasionally watch the g3 movies, and I always thought that was funny considering they’re probably the most opposite characters now
That g3.5 Concept Art the one were it looks like pinkie pie’s mom with hair style 35:31 I grew up with late g3 and then g3.5 and g3.5 newborn cuties and g4 I'm imaging was quite a shock to me as a kid I loved it a lot but at first it was possibly a shock from g3.5 to g4 and with g4 later on I lost the joy g3.5 gave me and hated them with 2020 and 2021 realizing mlp all generations are great.
You did a great job. It is amazing how different FiM could have been. I'm so happy FiM is what it is. I absolutely love this show since 2013. Greatest show ever.

G3 Pinkie Pie was also an earth pony, so I feel even more attacked to the idea
yess I feel like pinkie pie's antics and lack of physics would have felt way less funny if she just able to fly anyways
She says, "you were born with wings but you were never really meant to fly."
Makes it 100 times more crushing lol...

It isn't done particularly well (and with anything with make your mark) but it's kind of revisited in concept with the Auroracorns in the special
I kinda wish we got that more than just the rich snobby type of unicorns we usual see! (Rarity can still be her fancy and fabulous self tho!)
I wish they had thatttt
@rat_in_a_bucket why dont you simply not reply to this comment
Missing context:
- The reason why Hasdro lost the trademarks to most G1 ponies was because most of their names were common words.

Still, it's always neat to see what the show looked like back during the development process.
pinkie pie with wings is a scarier concept than flying cockroaches tbh lolll
@@lemonmeat couldn't agree more
In the end everything worked out for the best.
Pinkie Pie not having wings makes it much funnier when she appears from the top of the screen, or in high places she has no logical ability to get to.
Hasbro knew that Pinkie Pie would be too powerful if she could fly.
Rainbow dash is supposed to be the fast one. If Pinkie had wings. She’d be way faster. Hell even as an earth pony Rainbow Dash couldn’t outrun her. She was always right behind her
@@DJOctobotpinkie is just too powerful, shes basically god
@@kittytrot I guess giving her wings might not make that much of a difference. She can already fly short distances without them so being a pegasus would just allow her to keep flying.
@@DJOctoboti do not think thats true bc rainbow dash cant walk as fast as she flies so pinkie pie would make a triple rainboom if she went full power mode while flying
Imagine if the beta version of nightmare moon was basically nightmare moon’s true/final form
I still think that the version with the earth pony Pinkie and pegasus Fluttershy is better. The wings make Fluttershy look like an angel, and all of Pinkie crazy actions raise a lot of questions, since Pinkie is just an earth pony.
i agree
also being a pegasus is a pretty big part of fluttershy's character. her whole thing is that despite being a pegasus she had more of a connection with the group and doesn't like flying much
There’s a fun grimdark called “Truth Be Told” that uses the old concepts in a fun way.
EEEEE I remember that!!
I was thinking back to this grimdark while watching and I was accepting that I wouldn't find it again because of me forgetting the title oml dude you're my savior LOL
The saddle umbrellas were used within the show at least once. Rarity is wearing one when AJ's cornfield starts popping back in S2.
Also in Ticket Master.
I was a G3 MLP girl. Even before G4, I wondered why a pony called "Rainbow Dash" didn't have any affiliation with speed. I appreciate her upgrade to a tomboyish pegasus speedster with her old personality essentially given to Rarity.
I assumed the name of the old one was ment to be a mesurment "a dash of rainbow" and the new one meaning speed...

@jamesolszewski3782Yeah that's what he actually said.
I kinda love how the older designs of the ponies have them drawn with sharper/pointier lines, it's a small change but makes a big difference
Lauren Faust is Craig McCracken's wife, and her first writing gig was an episode of that show("specifically;"Equal Fights")!
The entire behind-the-scenes of getting a show from concept to greenlit sure is a fascinating story
Now that I look at it. Twilight's first concept was used to make her mom, Twilight Velvet. Or at least her mane style since her coat color is grey
Milkyway Galaxy Girls looked cute as hell, wish it happened!
Agreed! I’d have watched that!
If Lauren crowdfunded it I'm sure lots of people would be on board (idk about the legality of it tho, Hasbro or whatever could still technically "own" it despite it not being a real product yet)
It does but then MLP….would be gone and so would my whole childhood😭😭

@@aaazzz8324 I think that may be the reason Hasbro allowed the second villain to be named Discord.
@@aaazzz8324 yep, at the start of the episode they had Cheerilee teaching the class what the discord statue represented (and thus explaining the word as well)
It's really interesting to rewatch early episodes. The subtle differences in small things are so cool to see. Like in at least the first episode, (not sure when it changed) Twilight's magic was just sparkles instead of the color and aura-like thing around her horn(?) (its hard to explain but Twilight picks up Spike after meeting Fluttershy in the first ep and you can see this there)
I've also noticed the lack of background music and sound effects compared to later episodes. It's almost funnier in a way, and definitely calmer. I like both ways though.
Also I love Twilight's personality in earlier episodes, something about her is just so silly idk
anyways i just wanted to talk about this bc i love noticing silly things like that :3
this was a very interesting video!!
After watching these concept arts and designs, the layout and background animation looks a lot similar to the UPA cartoons from the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Yeah like rarities magic was purple instead of blue!
So thats why pinkie pie is my pony. Chopped off her childhood wings and got a retail job....checks out.
FIM always gave me nick jr and early cartoon network vibes

i love how the first concept of Fluttershy being an earth pony and Pinkie being a pegasus, as now we see Fluttershy has wings but barely flies and Pinkie jumps high a lot
when you watch the show, you really feel the change of pinkie pie's wings. as a kid who didnt yet grasp the nuance of character personalities showing by the way they moved, i always thought it was odd how fluttershy was never flying with rainbow dash when the mane 6 were walking around, afterall they were the two pegasus, arent they supposed to fly?
even if it isn't the intended vision, and this in particular brings mixed reactions because some do agree with the original designs, i think pinkie being grounded and fluttershy being able to fly is very charming. it shows that, despite their especies that supposidely dont fit them, they are still able to shine in their own way and do what makes them happy even if it doesnt "fit" their circumstances.. when you look at rainbow dash, applejack, or twilight, you really can't separate their species from their personalities and aspirations, but with pinkie and flutter that's more muddled and open. i think that's very appliable to children in mature subjects that we wouldnt even expect, such as following a career that is looked down upon/not what your parents want/overall unavailable, partaking in another culture that isnt your family's, and so on.
youd think that kids wouldnt grasp that nuance but trust me, fluttershy not being enough of a pegasus lived rent free in my mind through the entirety of middleschool lol, and now i get to make some pretty conforting hindsight,

Most of those names were too common of words to be trademarked, and as the other replier said, trademarks can expire
Also Firefly actually was trademarked for something else by then

33:28 rarity actually uses an umbrella like this in season 2 episode 1 !!
I believe Kimono from G3 also had connection to Twilight's design/palette in some ways.. Personality as well
I actually would have liked to see a episode where the Maine 6 when to a alternate dimension/universe and in it was the beta designs and such like that
5:39 Turkish Twilight doesn't exist, she can't hurt you.
Turkish Twilight:
It's kinda funny to me to see the saddle prototype designs, because a lot of the toys eventually did come with saddles to decorate your ponies with. I never liked them, so I threw them to the side whenever I played or displayed my pony toys 😂
Agree, like, who ride them (besides pets)
I know I already commented but I wanted to mention that having the role, good traits, and bad traits of a character in their description is a genius idea when working on a story and I’m definitely going to include that when making characters from now on
This is the first video in a long time that ive actually sat and watched completely through without getting bored or checking other apps, RUclips has been so dull lately.
Ok…the thumbnail explains why my cousin got a pinkie pie with purple hair and wings-
I wouldve LOVED an early introduction for the sea ponies! They were my favorite creatures from G1
@11:07 so basically even in the concept days of MLP:FIM Lauren Faust thought that Applejack was already perfect as is! 🍎 💯 🐴
Although seeing how Applejack was already a G1 pony from the 80's make me wonder. What came first? The pony or the cereal? 🥣🍎
seems like the cereal was first - the brand was introduced in 1965, changed their name to Applejacks in 1971
I’m stoned so don’t listen to me but my boyfriend said that the narrators voice sounded like an Asian character from South Park and I can’t unhear it, I’m sorry.
Anyways I really enjoyed your analysis, great video.
I really love the pinkie pie pegasus and fluttershy earth pony idea :,)
another scrapped idea was that they were gonna try to give all the main six boyfriends. i’m glad they scrapped that idea.
my personal favorite was pinkie's early design, i really like the idea of her being a pegasus. it gives the idea of her being free, being able to fly wherever she wanted like a bird. i think that idea fits her character really well because she's so free spirited and fun. the idea of fluttershy being an earth pony also fits her better because she is associated with animals and nature.
i like how the show turned out to be but pinkie going into hummingbird mode when sugar high? that's just adorable
and being an earth pony since the beginning would've saved fluttershy her trauma
I agree
Pegasus Pinkie would fly over head and rain confetti from the sky.
@noseboop4354 what?😂
@@noseboop4354 Wait what-
This is more G4 concept art/prototype material than what we were shown.
That is actually interesting how applejack - the most traditional pony in ponyville from the most traditional Apple family is also a design which stayed true to the 80s series
And no wonder why I loved the show so much, there was so many thought put into it ❤❤❤
Posey from G5 is basically Posey from I think G2 but with her mane tied up!! this is more suprising then the fact that Applejack got like two changes in her final design compared to the first design!!
1:13 why is dr insaneo pointing at the sky with a Christmas keyboard with the 11th Doctor crossed with buddy the elf next to him while Indiana jones watches in the background
Is anyone else crying watching this?? Why am I emotional??
Me seeing the thumbnail the main ponies with different designs.
"WTF WHO ARE YOU?!!??!?!"
rarities personality is very similar to that of gen 3 rainbow
I am suuuper sad my little pony friendship is magic had to end 😢 I hope they will resurrect it once more and maybe revisit scrapped ideas 🙂
Pegasus or not, I'm 99% sure that Pinkie could still fly if she put her mind to it
She did get a bicycle copter.
Star Song and Minty will always be my favorites.
How Rainbow Dash was originally gonna look seems almost as goated as the current.
I’m surprised. A lot of this I didn’t know! Like Pinkie with wings!
Honestly Pinkie's and Fluttershy's original races do fit them more. I would've loved to see hummingbird mode! But I think I like what we got more cuz it's just what I grew up with lol
Ngl this makes me wanna draw ponies
