I know this video is from a month ago, but THANK YOU for providing a quick series of videos on all the different parries and ashes of war parries. I searched for so long looking for a simple comparison of buckler vs carian retaliation vs golden parry on small/medium shields, there was a lot of info on the base parry skill but for some reason there was nothing on this! This was exactly what I was looking for and I think I'll be going with medium shield and carian retaliation with this info, thanks!
Bruh no wonder my first crucible knight fight was so difficult. I was going for parry strategies, and I had regular parry on medium shield, which is tied for lowest number of parry frames (5). Oof
now this is good video! recently everyone is showing 1 ashes of war or 1 skill.. for 15 damn minutes before he actually explains something. Here we have it great. Short, with big variety and informational !
So carian/golden put on medium shields retain its small shield values, beating even buckler for parrying. Throughout all my ER gaming I haven't even considered that. Much balance. Excellent video.
Crazy that Carian Retaliation is just a strict upgrade to standard parrying. Small shield parry frames were always easiest for me to feel, so seeing how they're only slightly less start-up than medium shields (but with more than double the parry frames) has me really interested.
I really felt like Carian retaliation was better than the medium shield standard. I didn't think it was even better than the small shields tho. Hopefully it doesn't get nerfed cuz I rely on it to fight crucible knights.
I've been practicing parry on crucible knight at stormveil area, I can almost perfect parry him with my regular small parry shield, but I didn't know the carrian ashes have extra 3frames, same as with medium shield, ty for this info.
when i was dying nonstop to malenia i thought i'd try to parry her but i suck at parry and i searched for a video like this for elden ring and couldn't find any, i wish this video had it posted before, I already killed her with no parry, but parryng would be so badass
Based off this there is no reason to take a buckler over any other shield with carian retaliation on it. That is wild, and I have a feeling is not intended, but hopefully they keep it. In addition, if you pvp and you pull out a buckler that should set off alarms in peoples heads to stop being predictable so that information helps the mind games too. Good video
why are so many people overlooking the stamina cost of carian retaliation? at 125 stamina i can do 7 retaliation parries but I can do 14 buckler parries. that and the hitbox on buckler parries almost never miss.
So basically, the earlier the parry comes out, the easier it is to parry on reaction and the number of frames indicate your window, meaning a larger parry windows grant a more leeway for less precise parries. That said, bit of a shame they gutted weapon parries. Fist and claws don't seem to parry as good anymore, and curved sword parries too, though to a lesser degree. Not only did they nerf rapier parries, but they took away its sick-looking animation.
This is perfect timing! I was just trying to look up yesterday if there is differences in the parrying timing between armaments. And now this video is up! Seems like my choice of using carrion retaliation was a good one.
Yo this is awesome! Can you also count the frames for Blood Hound Step, Quickstep, Dynast Finesse, and Vow of the Indomitable? This is an awesome tool!
yeah so many people sleeping on carian retaliation, it's so good at counter those type of boss that like to spam magic when you are far like dragon tree sentinel and godskin and mohgw
I parried so many people in duel today with medium shield and thought that I'm a parry god, Turned out that I just got a big help from using carian ash😂
So the special parries have the same frames for both medium and small shields it seems then. Nice work. Thought that was the case. My banished knight shield golden parried/riposted my way through melania very nicely, and helped a ton to block the first wave of her waterfowl dance. Meanwhile I couldn’t consistently parry margit with a medium shield with standard parry.
Parrying bosses in Elden Ring is not Worth it (unless you are a god at it) bcuz you need to parry them 3 times in a row or something to perform a riposte unlike previous games.
Sooo, "ash of war" parry like carian is just straight up superior not only to the normal, but also buckler parry? Didn't expect that. Also, this video explained to me why i was so shit at parrying, i always thought that parry frames are during the part of the animation where character swings the shield at enemy, not where he just holds it. Thanks for the another intuitive system miyazaki, truly a genius gamedesigner
Parrying is about catching the attack and shoving it away, not just whacking it. It makes more sense this way, but I can see why it doesn't look right at a glance.
Great info, thank you. I have been looking for parry frames since the game released. Carian Retaliation seems to only use FP when parrying a spell, Golden Parry uses FP every time the parry button is pressed, but I am not sure about Storm Wall. Does it use FP on a regular parry? Or just when it deflects a projectile/arrow?
Carian retaliation is 8/14? And you can put it on 100% phys block shields. That's busted. It has better frames than buckler parry but can be on something thick like brass shield.
Big thing to note with the special parries Stormwall - High frames 11/11 and can deflect projectiles Carian Retaliation - Can also parry spells that load up glintblades that fire on enemies Golden Parry - Can parry attacks and range and in an AoE. The sweep can parry multiple targets at once Buckler Parry - High frames 8/11 Stormwall is super situational but Carian and Golden are both highly useful and put themselves on another tier.
From my experience, golden parry has good flat and wide parry window, good for thrusting weapons. The ash Carian Retailiation has a round parry window, not as good for thrusting attacks as the golden parry ash, but better for vertical weapon attacks, and doesn't use FP unless deflecting magic being cast. Both shield ashes improve the use of medium shields parry - which have a better guarded physical of 100 as compared to the buckler having 61. I think the buckler is great - can be purchased early game until further discovery onward, using a medium shield, mid game with either Golden Parry ash or Carian Retailiation ash is better - plays into the location level gating aspects of playing through the game naturally.
Buckler Parry all the time for me...I just couldn't make other shields/weapons work consistently...though a Brass Shield + Parry AoW works wonders on combo attacks :)
Imagine not me using the parry skill with a medium sword for more than 40 hours into the game. No wonder I thought this was ridiculously hard compared to Lies of P (which already has a very narrow parry window of 8 frames). Everything changed after I got the magic parry. Now I feel like I can parry even the golems (I know I can't), it's just so good and so easy.

Seeing golden parry has parry frames for the duration of the golden arc effect makes it a perfect tool to train parry timing!
Ooooooh. So close to a perfect video dude. If you could take the time to smack these boys onto a chart, explain to new players what exactly the start frames mean, and which specific two barriers best physical/magical. That would have just been the icecream on the cake. Otherwise I definitely give a 9/10. Appreciate the research my good guy. Praise the sun!, and praise you!
This actually helped a lot because I thought party frames started at the very first frame do my parries were never working before
Great breakdown!
Those zero hit double curved sword parry Malenia fight are truly godly
Ever since DS1 to 3 Ive been looking for a video like this, thank you
Man that time window is so short, very useful to see it visualized and I don't think I'll be trying to parry anytime soon
Oof
Beat him with a brass shield parrying. Took quite a while lol.
Great info, thanks.
Still love using dagger to parry because it's the sexiest but always good to know the true stats.
now this is good video! recently everyone is showing 1 ashes of war or 1 skill.. for 15 damn minutes before he actually explains something.
Here we have it great. Short, with big variety and informational !
I was just looking this up last night with no success. Thank you!
Thank you so much, the community needed this!
So carian/golden put on medium shields retain its small shield values, beating even buckler for parrying. Throughout all my ER gaming I haven't even considered that. Much balance.
Excellent video.
I've been waiting so long for this. THANK YOU
This is all that I ever wanted to answer my questions about parrying but I kept running across 3 hour videos of parry gods explaining parry.
The instakill pvp exploit should be fixed, but hopefully the parry itself is left alone
@@ToastyTstdToast just get more vigor, and stop spamming easily parriable spells against a shield
@@Putrefax i think you misread my comment bruh, i didn't want the parry changed, just the broken swords from the parry ash.
people have done this already and made a handy chart showing all the parry windows. they do this for every souls game.
Dayum, those frames on the medium shield with golden parry is nasty boi.
I've been practicing parry on crucible knight at stormveil area, I can almost perfect parry him with my regular small parry shield, but I didn't know the carrian ashes have extra 3frames, same as with medium shield, ty for this info.
Time to throw them Bucklers in the trash and farm up a Brass Shield + Golden Parry/Carian Retaliation
I hate how they kept making dagger abd curved sword parries worse with every game like damn bro those are the coolest looking parries come on!
Thank you SO much. Was looking everywhere for something like this!
They really need to give dagger parrying more options
You've done God's work! I've been looking for this video since the game came out!!!
when i was dying nonstop to malenia i thought i'd try to parry her but i suck at parry and i searched for a video like this for elden ring and couldn't find any, i wish this video had it posted before, I already killed her with no parry, but parryng would be so badass
My hero. This is incredibly useful.
Wow! You are golden. Super useful info. Seems like golden parry is the winner here, given the large range and # of frames.
This is worth a like and a sub. Good work, Brave Tarnished!
I had no idea how insanely good these ashes of war are. I struggled the most with regular parrying in this game compared to the other souls games
This makes much more sense when I switched from small shield to curved sword parries just because I thought it looked cooler 😂
Omg the curved sword animation is so sexy it makes we want to play the whole game again only with curved swords and finally leaning how to parry
Just WOW, this what we needed.
This is perfect timing! I was just trying to look up yesterday if there is differences in the parrying timing between armaments. And now this video is up! Seems like my choice of using carrion retaliation was a good one.
So helpful. I will run with medium shield + carian retalation
Wow not the results I expected. Great job on the vid bro keep it up
Yo this is awesome! Can you also count the frames for Blood Hound Step, Quickstep, Dynast Finesse, and Vow of the Indomitable? This is an awesome tool!
That curved sword parry looks badass though
Dope ass breakdown. Highly appreciated.
14 parry frames on carian retaliation. No wonder parrying has felt so consistent even with my medium shield
yeah so many people sleeping on carian retaliation, it's so good at counter those type of boss that like to spam magic when you are far like dragon tree sentinel and godskin and mohgw
Just what it needs to be. Legendary reference video, one again. c: Thank you
I parried so many people in duel today with medium shield and thought that I'm a parry god, Turned out that I just got a big help from using carian ash😂
Carian ash witch medion shield you use?
@@TotalWarriorLegends the one that banished knights have
The video I've been waiting for since day 1!
Incredibly useful, thx!
damn. i didn’t realize just how crap medium shields were for parry. definitely ditching them on my build.
Refreshing to see all those monster hunters in elden ring
Wow that explains a lot. There are so few frames on normal parries.
Wowww carian and golden parry actually being better than buckler makes me super happy actually
excellent. been looking for something like this
i want always parry boss, but i cant parry it, now i know what problem is. thank you this help me so much
So the special parries have the same frames for both medium and small shields it seems then. Nice work. Thought that was the case. My banished knight shield golden parried/riposted my way through melania very nicely, and helped a ton to block the first wave of her waterfowl dance. Meanwhile I couldn’t consistently parry margit with a medium shield with standard parry.
unquestioning the best parry shield video
Really appreciate your hard work. Really thought golden parry was better than Carian but they are the same. Nice to know.
Golden has a much larger range! So its easier to proc im that sense. U can parry an enemy thats pretty far away from you
i like how the all the parrys are just plain old parries, and then the curved sword parry just goes like ✨p a r r y✨💅
I mean tbf that parry and the buckler/dagger parry are probably the closest this game's gonna get to actual HEMA parrying lmao
I like how the golden party animation moves in the wrong direction because they never expected you to use it in your right hand.
Fantastic Video! Thanks for the information and lack of pointless BS
Will definitely be subbing for more
I have a confession: ive played and beaten every souls game since demons souls, never once landed a parry.
Parrying bosses in Elden Ring is not Worth it (unless you are a god at it) bcuz you need to parry them 3 times in a row or something to perform a riposte unlike previous games.
@@feelsgoodman2171 It depends on the boss, some bosses require less parries.
@@feelsgoodman2171 depends. Parrying is very effective on Elemer. Even if you can't crit, there's stagger and interrupting the combo.
Bruh if you don’t parry Gwynn what is you doing lmao
@@reunite-elite2988 tank
Sooo, "ash of war" parry like carian is just straight up superior not only to the normal, but also buckler parry? Didn't expect that. Also, this video explained to me why i was so shit at parrying, i always thought that parry frames are during the part of the animation where character swings the shield at enemy, not where he just holds it. Thanks for the another intuitive system miyazaki, truly a genius gamedesigner
Parrying is about catching the attack and shoving it away, not just whacking it. It makes more sense this way, but I can see why it doesn't look right at a glance.
Certainly did help, now I know to literally only use Carian Retaliation or Golden Parry.
The longer animations in Curved Swords fooled me, I thought they had a longer anticipations and also a longer active frames.
It uses fp every time
@@actionpants3138 Thank you!
yep, can confirm as well it does consume hp every time you use it
It would need futher testing, but I think i staggered some foes spamming storm wall trying to parry.
Carian retaliation is 8/14? And you can put it on 100% phys block shields. That's busted. It has better frames than buckler parry but can be on something thick like brass shield.
don't tell the devs about this 🤫
The Buckler Parry is free and Carian retaliation costs 8 FP, if you are skilled thats nothing but for parry spammers the FP bar will melt.
@@JordlbergerLP Last time I checked, it doesn't use FP. Maybe it only does when it catches a spell but if you're just parrying, it costs nothing.
@@ixiahj Yup, only on successful parries.
@@qwormuli77 only on successful parry against magic, successful parry against physical is still 0fp
It's golden parry for anyone wondering
Big thing to note with the special parries
Stormwall - High frames 11/11 and can deflect projectiles
Carian Retaliation - Can also parry spells that load up glintblades that fire on enemies
Golden Parry - Can parry attacks and range and in an AoE. The sweep can parry multiple targets at once
Buckler Parry - High frames 8/11
Stormwall is super situational but Carian and Golden are both highly useful and put themselves on another tier.
are magic counted as projectiles or no?
@@AngBata11 Might work on the ones that do physical damage like Rock Sling and Stone of Gurranq. Otherwise that would be Carian
Buckler is 8/11, GP and CR are just better in every way.
@@GMurph2336 Untrue
the buckler animation is classic
Good stuff. TY for upload! Gonna stick with my deep blue parry baby!
I just slap the golden parry on the buckler to both fear and confuse my fellow tarnished
Wow thank you very much, this is some very valuable information!
a summery at the end of the video would have been really helpful
Curved sword parry just looks the coolest though lol
GREAT VIDEO ! Very useful information
Sort of wish there was a list of all of them together at the end for comparisons.
explains why i'm only able to parry with carian retaliation xD
