    Biography:
    Lucien James "Luc" Longley (born January 19, 1969 in Melbourne, Victoria) is a retired Australian professional basketball player, who was the first Australian to play in the NBA. He attended college at the University of New Mexico. Known for his passing ability and free spirit, Longley drew comparisons to fellow redhead Bill Walton upon his entry into the NBA.Longley was drafted 7th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1991. After two plus mediocre seasons with the struggling franchise, the 7'2" (218 cm) center was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Stacey King late in the 1993-94 season. He won three straight championships with the Bulls from 1996 to 1998.Following the break up of the championship Bulls in 1998, Chicago did a sign and trade with Longley, sending him to the Phoenix Suns for Mark Bryant, Martin Muursepp, Bubba Wells, and a conditional first-round draft pick. Longley spent two lackluster seasons with Phoenix, where he gained less attention for his play than for being stung twice by a scorpion while sitting on the floor of his home sorting through his CD collection.1 (Longley also had difficulties with bodysurfing - he managed to separate his shoulder and miss 18 games in 1997. He was traded to the New York Knicks prior to the 200001 NBA season in what was only the second four-team trade in NBA history. The Suns acquired Chris Dudley as part of the deal together with a first-round draft pick from New York and an undisclosed amount of cash, while New York received Longley, Glen Rice, Travis Knight, Vladimir Stepania, Lazaro Borrell, Vernon Maxwell, two first-round draft picks (from the Los Angeles Lakers and the Seattle SuperSonics) and two second-round draft picks from Seattle. Seattle received Patrick Ewing and the Lakers received Horace Grant, Greg Foster, Chuck Person and Emanual Davis. Longley spent one year with New York before retiring. Longley averaged 7.20 points and 4.90 rebounds per game in his 567 regular season game NBA career. Longley played more NBA games than any other Australian and is widely regarded as one of the best Australian basketballers ever.Longley did not appear in many international matches with the Australian Boomers during his career, likely due to various injuries that stemmed from an ankle injury that eventually ended his playing days.Longley attended Scotch College, Perth for the majority of his high schooling, was part-owner of the Perth Wildcats basketball club in the Australian National Basketball League for several years (he played 2 games for the club in 1986), and is currently the #1 ticket holder of the Fremantle Dockers in the Australian Football League.
    On April 6, 2007, Longley's $2 million home in Fremantle, Western Australia, was destroyed by a fire. It is believed much of Longley's memorabilia from his basketball career was lost, although his three championship rings may have been spared.He is currently a specialist coach for the Perth Wildcats.

    Luc Longely was a great role player. He gave out 4 or 5 fouls, blocked a few shots, clogged up the lane, passed it off to Jordan and and Pippen, pick up the garbage points whenever available, and made his free throws.

      Roger Martinez he was money with the baseline jumpshot. Fit in perfectly with the Bulls championship runs

      Went toe to toe against legends like Ewing, Zo, Shaq, Mutumbo....sure he didn't necessarily win those matchups but he created problems too for those guys. I remember start of Game 1 1996 ECF he went right at Shaq. He scored first two buckets leading NBC Announcer Greg Gumble to say "Longley 4 - Magic 0".
      In those Bulls-Warriors matchups comparing dynasties this is where the Bulls have a huge advantage. If Longley can go toe to toe with the legends then going against Zaza or Javille McGee will be a walk in the park for him.

    Longley was never the most gifted athlete, but he was a hustler and a quite good defensive player. To all the guys in here hating on him...nearly every single highlight of this video was in the playoffs (many of them in the finals). Let's say he was not the worst piece of this Chicago team...but a key role player for sure!

    Why are so many people hating on Longley? The Bulls team of 1996 is widely regarded as one of the best ever. They still have the winning record. The Bull's dynasty was one of the best and they had one of the highest support and most money. Do you really think they would use this guy as a STARTING center if he wasn't one of the best players of his time?

    longley was the perfect example of why the bulls team of the late 90's gelled. if you watch any michael jordan compilation you would think he or scottie pippen could make any bucket, every single time, but in fact longley would be there a lot of the time to do the work, as well as a great passer. he was a great player, don't think otherwise.

    Proud to be Australian! And let's be honest his stats weren't great, but just because he wasn't offensive, it doesn't mean he wasn't a good player, so people just calm down, making it to the NBA is already a huge feat in itself

    man, I like role players. These kids today only watch stars, but you have to note that role players are keys to championships. Also Luc Longley was a decent player.

  • @willyhillydude
    @willyhillydude 11 лет назад

    Luc played like a big man should. These kids get obsessed over stats. Fantasy leagues have made that false perception that stats are everything. This guy was one of three big centers the Bulls used in their rotation. He was physical & did everything his team needed from him. Big centers were important to the Bulls success. Rodman, Pippen, & Jordan grabbed boards. Luc contested shots and played big. Kukoc made buckets off the bench. The Bulls had a great supporting cast. Everyone knew their role.

  • @Lalambz

    pretty sure he'd be ranked higher than bogut, if you look at the way they impact the teams (not just by stats) and look who hada

    • @jayzee7538
      @jayzee7538 3 года назад

      He's hands down better than Bogut. This Center matchup is where 90s Bulls pull away from 2010s Warriors. If Luc Longley can battle the Ewings, Shaqs, Zos, Dreams of the 90s then the Warriors Centers will be cakewalks for him.

    ElDiabloWhoppo and others, as you can see in the video, Luc was always was of the more humbler, laid back types in the NBA. Even when he made the big dunk, or came up with a big rejection, he rarely if ever made a show of it, just kept his head down, modest amongst a team of big stars and tbh big egos with Jordan, Rodman and co. He was a team man and did his role exceptionally well, and due to this, was perhaps quite under rated because of this. Just a quiet character among all the excitement.

    www.theage.com.au/news/basketball/bogut-scoffs-at-longley-legacy/2005/06/28/1119724633991.html
    Andrew Bogut 2005.: "I've had a better collegiate career than anyone else from Australia that came over here," he said. "I'm not as slow as Luc Longley, I'm more athletic, I can shoot better, I'm more competitive. So I think it's not even fair to bring that name up."
    I wonder if Bogut can still say the same 10 years later.
    Luuuuuc did fine a Chicago Bulls player, he did his role well. A traditional big man who can do a short jumper and anchor the triangle offense.

    @MCEntreri Athletically speaking. Harper didn't have Jordan's IQ or skills and was signed by the Bulls to replace Jordan (when he was in the minor leagues). Harper couldn't understand the triangle and went from averagin 20 a game for the Clippers to 7 a game for the Bulls.

  • @ramzevans
    @ramzevans 14 лет назад

    basketball isn't an individual sport it's best played selflessly, with teamwork the the most important factor in a successful team. The Bulls were made up of players that complimented each other so perfectly, and Jordan had the selfless nature about him to make plays when he could but pass and give up responsibility when the time and scenario called for it.

    Everyone argued that those supporting cast in the Bulls won the three-peat coz of a Pippen and Jordan but the bottomline was the whole team was stacked ! Everyone stepped-up during the post-season and that was the reason the have gone to the finals three times and won.
    Unlike Lebron during his Cavs year, he got shit for teammates. But just 2 seasons with the Heat, he won his first title. So dont say Championship rings is an individual sport.
