What is Biblical Worship?

  • Dr. John Bergsma investigates what worship in the Bible looks like. The Hebrew word hishtachavah, which is translated as worship, when it doesn't just mean "bow down", always involves sacrifice. So in order for there to be true biblical worship, it must involve sacrifice.
    Notable Quote:
"In the rabbinic tradition they were well aware of the fact that the Temple was built on the site on which Isaac had nearly been offered on the mount. The rabbis asked themselves a question, where do the animal sacrifices that we offer in the Temple, where do they get their effectiveness, their efficacy? There are passages in the Old Testament itself that say that animals don't take away sin, that the blood of animals is not what God really wants.
So in the rabbinic tradition they asked, if we have these Psalms that say that animal sacrifices are not the ultimate answer, then what is the meaning of these sacrifices that we offer in the Temple? And do you know what the conclusion is that the rabbis came to? They said, you know what, these animal sacrifices in the Temple are offered on the same place were Isaac once freely accepted a potential death in offering himself to God. What these animal sacrifices then are is re-presentations of that one efficacious, freely accepted sacrifice of our ancestor when he gave himself freely on the mountaintop and they just kind of draw their power from that one event."

All throughout the Old Testament, how all the Jews worshiped God, was through a sacrifice, as Jesus said I did not come here to condemn the law, I came here to fulfill it, telling us he is the sacrifice, he is the Lamb of God.
thank you so much, from an ex-protestant, & now coming home to Rome...
God bless u all my brothers and sisters 🙏🏼💯🇻🇦

Amazing typology! Just as Isaac carried wood to the mountain to be offered as sacrifice, so was Jesus carried a cross to Mount Calvary to be offered as the sacrificial Lamb. This also fulfilled the proto-evangeleum where the Lord told Eve that he will crush the serpent's head with her offspring... and She and Jesus nailed a cross in Golgotha or the place of the skull.

We see now that the animal sacrifices in the temple at Mount Moriah are the afterrunners of that ram in the thickets that God provided in lieu of Isaac.

And when the real Isaac comes, then there is no reason to continue with the sacrificing of animals.

I loved your video. I was having trouble finding the word "histahavah" on google though. Instead, the word for worship was translated as "shachah" in hebrew. Are both terms related?
