In his hi-hat intro fill at 0:52, Krupa plays with the pattern a bit and almost flips the time in a manner very similar to Max Roach's hi-hat intro on Tiny's Tempo, recorded some years earlier. Cool to how bop vocabulary influenced post-prime big band era swing.

Wow, that was fantastic! As of this writing, Barbara Dane is still with us at 94 years old. Born: 12 May 1927

Gene was a master of the triplet, and syncopation!!! No one was better at "cross sticking" on the snare drum either....

I saw Satchmo and Trummy Young in concert in Nashville in 1968 and I will always cherish that memory.

Indeed he was! Musically he was deeply rooted in the sound of jazz and it showed in the many successful records he released with Capitol.

Yes it was! I saw Gene perform many times from 1940 until he died in 1973. I still miss him and his unique style of drumming.

It’s a pity, all these other people are interfering with Gene’s drumming..🙂
