The problem with social care is that it has been outsourced to private companies. Private companies are designed to make a profit, it is what they're for, hence by default a chunk of monies paid won't go to delivering care but to delivering profit. How anyone can think profit should be a driver for delivering care of a highly vulnerable group is beyond my comprehension. It would make far more sense to go back to the drawing board and replace NI with a hypothecated tax for health and social care aligned with a root and branch reform of the NHS and social care services, bringing them both under one roof,. It shouldn't be rocket science to have a coherent organisation and supporting processes: acute care (a&e etc), chronic care (ongoing health issues), convalescent care (post acute care interventions) and social care (geriatric and mental health primarily).

    I.
I've been forced to claim Carers Allowance to care for my 88yr old disabled mother. It is £2.34/hr for 35 hrs a week. If I get a job, I can't earn more than £150.
    Benefits system is broken.
I worked for 39 years straight for the same company. For six months after I was made redundent I couldn't claim any benefits because of my redundancy pay.
And I couldn't commit to a Full-Time job because of my caring responsibliity.

    • @Jan-sn5tk
      @Jan-sn5tk Месяц назад

Same here. I had to give up my job to care for my adult child for 2 years who was in a horrendous car accident. Then my dad became ill with COPD and then he died.i received no income at all for 10 years and lived off my 40 years worth of savings. Couldnt get any benefit as i couldny go out to work and do the care as well and I had savings. I was fortunate that the mortgage had been paid off by then. then it was my mothers serious illnesses and two operations that kept me away from paid work. By now i was too old to get a decent job anyway. Then the tory government moved my state pension age back by 18 months and then again for another 2 years. Pension i was banking on. Meanwhile the condition of my house seriously deterioratied because i just didnt have any spare cash to keep it in goòd condition. So savings depleted living in a rotting mouldy house losing value year on year. I risked my and my mothers life by delivering essential food during lockdown for 2 hours each night. The only job i could get. Tories capped the tax free allowance on earnings for 5 years. No doubt that will be lowered now. Now labour are scrapping the winter fuel allowance. Is it worth staying alive after you can no longer work. Are we looking at scrappage of the state pension as well and working till you drop dead?

Labour has had nearly four weeks in office and what is their record so far?
    1. They're letting prisoners out earlier despite crime going out of control.
    2. They've done nothing as yet to deport foreign criminals such as the Nigerian responsible for knifing an army officer recently or the Pakistanis attacking airport security in Manchester.
    3. They've cancelled the only scheme so far to be able to remove illegal immigrants and have given an amnesty to huge numbers. [What has happened to the new law criminalising illegal immigrants?]
    4. They've started a 'Green' company to encourage investment in 'Green Energy' that no-one will invest in.
    5. They've made an agreement to pay above inflation rises to the salaries of public sector workers (average salary £45,000 per year) while reducing pensioners' income by £300 per year when the state pension is only £11,502.40 per year.
    6. They've scrapped the social care cap.

That 86k cap was a con - only benefitting the richest. I work in social care finance and very few reach that limit. The only ones who can afford to keep their homes are those who have more money tucked away - everyone else will have to sell their property to afford up to £86k anyway. It was always smoke and mirrors and not benefitting those most in need - just the richest of property owners

My uncle was still working into his 70s when he developed dementia and had to go into a nursing home. By the time he died 6 and a bit years later the fees were almost 6k a month. His life savings, his house (which my grandparents had bought in 1930 and he had lived in his entire life until had to go into the home), pretty much everything he owned went on paying for his care. His big mistake was to work and save, he would have better off to have just spent every penny rather than living relatively frugally. The current system is deeply unfair and unjust and choosing to axe the cap before it comes into force while continuing to waste 11bn of taxpayers money on overseas climate change projects just so politicians can swan around to global climate change conferences on private jets is obscene

There is no point blaiming this on doctors; teachers; nurses and military staff, these professionals are well due the pay rise money they will receive. Especially when the pay is not great to start off with and doctors nurses and teachers, are also saddled with university depts to train to work within these public sector jobs. Think you need to look at other factors such as billions in debt left by Tories; billions In funding to Africa; funding for Ukraine war; as well as immigration hotel/processing costs. Junior doctors; teachers and nurses work extremely hard and the majority also work overtime with no extra pay, so a bit of a cop out to target them!

@@user-tk2sc3rz9t oh, so it's only the public sector that have to pay off university fees? Everybody is in the same boat, so we're told, but the private sector get criticised for giving above inflation rises. The comment was more about the fairness of this sort of thing and you miss the point, if there's a black hole in the purse carrying on spending like this just compounds the issue.
I agree with the foreign aid budget, this should have been stopped a long time ago, there's half of the shortfall particularly when it goes to countries to fund their arms and space development..
