Awesome build. Simple, cheap and a long lasting. What more could anyone ask for?
That is cool and doable, now I would be highly interested in how to make a large rechargeable iron oxide battery (55 gallon barrel) that would run 110 volt 10 - 200 amp appliances in case the grid goes out. And how long it could run one 10 amp appliance, then just 50 amp appliances, then the time it would last running 200 amps at once. I know hardly anything about electrical things, so if you make it, a lot of detail and simple instructions. Also, that could be expanded by simply adding more identical units by its' side to double or more how long it held a charge.
Nickel Iron sulfuric: A battery with no electrode deterioration at all. Edison's circa 1900 batteries supposed to still work.
Sodium hydroxide dissolves aluminum and releases hydrogen, and I'm pretty sure Na0H has a similar reaction with copper. By, "5 years lifespan", do you mean when stored before adding the electrolyte? ...Otherwise it seems that the aluminum, (and possibly also the copper), would be dissolved if left sitting in a solution of NaOH on a shelf for a while. Thank you for taking the time to share this. I've always been fascinated with batteries that can be made at home. Robert Murray-Smith also has some very interesting videoS on this subject as well as many other subjects in this field of study.

I was going to highlight the same point: aluminum dissolves in caustic soda generating gaseous hydrogen and oxygen. They are highly flammable and even explosive. Perhaps it would be possible to use them through a burning valve. In the case of a larger scale, of course.
Could the solution be contained separate from the chemical? Have tab at the bottom that breaks the seal? Flooding the chamber when your read to use it? To extend battery life.
This will be like a sealed pudding can pull the tab, it's filled in! He separated container straight to the bottom.

When I was young a neighbor got a new color tv. When he got it the dealer tossed in a little do -it-yourself Kit for his kids to play with. All his kids were little, so he gave it to me. It was from Burgess battery company, a make - your - own D size batteries kit. It was basically the older way they made D batteries in a kit form, enough stuff to make two.
It used a metal can filled with electrolyte paste and a carbon rod down the center. I used them in a flashlight for quite some time and when they got pretty weak I took them apart, broke down and re-mixed the electrolyte with a little water as it was mostly because of drying out, and packed them back together again to use some more.
Then the electrolyte was getting pretty gnarly so I couldn’t do it a third time.
doesn't Lye eat aluminum? I have used it to clean my end mills gummed up with aluminum because i just let the bits sit in the Lye and it then dissolves all the aluminum.
I was expecting maybe 1 volt at .250 amp. To get a solid 1.25 volt at more than 1 amp is impressive my friend. I will be building 100, 50 in series, remains in parallel. A very cheap and simple power plant my friend. Thank you for sharing.

Better to use lead instead aluminium pipe. Because electrolite solution will spoil the aluminium. Electrolite don't have negative effect on lead.

They can run indefinitely with a flow of 10-20% NaOH. But when I removed the NaOH the oxidation on the aluminum was such that it would not work again. Yes, the electrolyte turns to sodium carbonate in about 6 hours. Fresh electrolyte will keep it going. But if it dries it didn't work anymore for me. Nice clean work. Thanks!
you could use a baking soda/water mix and clean off the aluminum oxide with some gentle scrubbing before reusing. hope this helps!
Something I've tried that actually seems to work is to rinse the anode with vinegar. It stops the reaction of alkali on the anode. But it must dry completely or be rinsed with water before refilling with electrolyte or else it neutralizes the electrolyte. It does preserve the aluminum.
@@evanriddle1614 I imagine that the vinegar has to sit on it for a while, right? i would think you would need to scrub at least a little, and since the aluminum in this example is so thick i'm not against scrubbing a bit for it to work at full capacity.
@zatnicatienth just contact with the KOH or NaOH neutralizes it. Baking soda is for acid. Vinegar is for alkaline. The vinegar has to dry completely or be flushed out with water. The aluminum can be used again and again. I got 10 hours out of about 2 Sq cm .025" thick for a total of 1.5 ah. 2 hours one day, 5 hours the next day and the rest was consumed in 3 hours final day. About 150 mA

knowing that aluminoum works as an alternative to lead used on lead acid bayyeries is good . Thatmmeans we can replace shrinkin lead plates with aluminium plates on defective lead acid batteries and teyll work better then old days

Yes you can make a larger one to get more current. I had two holes to position the aluminum more easily and neatly.

Well done. Now if I could make a suggestion. If you make this a two chamber battery then you could just tip the electrolite into the other chamber between uses then have it return when needed. That way you will not be continually handling the corosive liquid.

Is it possible to use another material for electrolyte that is not so corrosive and mix it with some material to make a paste rather than liquid?

حقا رائع . يوجد لدي ملاحظة لتكمله مشروعك . يمكنك استبدال الكربون والجرافيت بثاني اكسيد المنغنيز وتخلطة مع الغراء الابيض . سوف تلاحظ ارتفاع الفولت الي 1.85 والامبير اعلي . فهي بطارية غير قابل للشحن . الغريب في هذه البطارية الفولت يبقي ثابت مع الامبير حتي يذوب الالمنيون الي ان ينتهي بالكامل . لاكن احذر الابخرة الناتج عن التفاعل الكميائي .

One can make enough of these to make 12 Volts. And dry store them in a remote cabin..
At 1.2V you need 10 of them!
And when shyte hits the fan, one can bug out in comfort..
As I have tested larger versions of these, with stainless steel and aluminium.. We got over three years, with a lot of amps..
As in should be able to run one radio and a 12 v LED light strip...
Bigger ones could run a small freezer, to keep your food fresh.

I's much cheaper the way he did it. Copper is expensive. Aluminum is cheap.

Well, it's a home made project not meant for home purpose coz if it's left unnoticeable for a long time it may explode and lead to serious consequences.
Make the white tube 2× more length, now the electrolythe is at the bottom, when you want to use the battery, just turn the battery, now the electrolythe is in contact with electrode. Put somes instruction on the tube : on off and " turn the battery to make contact".
Very nice brother but you miss a point. The main idea is not separate the electrolyte from the electrodes, you have to renew the electrolyte time to time. Because after for a while the ability of the electrolyte to deplete aluminum will end up. At this point you have to replace the electrolyte with new one👍

If your question is referring to how it may become catastrophic, then I suggest you use your imagination or just dig up some past events that weren't supposed to have happened but did due to some silly careless error, human error. So, its best not to go all out trying to create a battery someone showed randomly on the Internet all for the reason of wanting to save some few bucks while risking own or others' lives or limbs.

@@aaronsingh6496 Well I've made countless batterys from many means and the info came from the Internet just like info came from a book one n the same belive it or not books are only wrote by humans and the same info or full book can be bought or read online...and no catastrophic isn't self explanatory it's a perceptional word what is catastrophic too me would be a volcano erupting n killing 1000s off people on the other hand a minor chance off a small shock maybe or a slight burn off some description if you don't pay attention too me is not catastrophic...you can chop a potato n harm yourself if your not careful may even loose a finger but I don't see anybody putting warning signs about chopping fruit...same too be said about purchasing a car I would suggest driving a car is vastly more dangerous too you and others than building a small battery with a volt or so and maybe half an amp or two will do you no harm yet a lack off concentration driving a car can wipe out ten people n ruin ten familys in a second so would you suggest such a catastrophic warning when buying a car ?

The answers to your all questions are exist in video. But l will explain again: this battery is not a rechargeable battery, l mean you don’t need to charge it. When you put electrolyte it will work. When it has electrolyte it can provide electricity for 6 hours. After 6 hours you have to renew the electrolyte. So it can run the blender for six hours.

@@harikumar4418 bro the the voltage is 1.25 volts the current is more than 1 amp so the battery can provide this current for six hours. It means the battery has 1x6 = 6Ah. Yes if you make more than one battery of this and connect them in parallel and serial you can handle higher load.

The chemical reaction between aluminum and sodium hydroxide is determine the voltage. If you make it larger you get higher current.
Make one as tall as a lampstand, and put an led lightbulb on top and see how long u can make it light.
When I say led lightbulb, I mean an led lightbulb like u use in ur everyday life, not these tiny lil indicator lights that just happens to be led. If that's what a person thinks of when they hear "led lightbulb" then they don't understand reality.

When you said it last for 5 years, did you mean 5 years in storage or 5 years of continuous use ??
Not both of them. I mean with a normal use the aluminum will deplete after five years. If you use very rarely you can use maybe ten years in storage.

The voltage will be the same when you enlarge the size of the battery but the current will increase. If you want to increase the voltage you can make more than one of this batteries and put them in series (2 batteries = 2.8 volts, 3 batteries = 4.2 Volts)

En son Fe3o4 ile yaptığınız iletken boyayı biraz kalın bir şekilde alüminyum boru üzerine uygulayabilirseniz bu durumda alüminyum elektrod akım toplayıcı olarak çalışmaya başlayacaktır(bu videodaki bakır elektrodun akım toplayıcı gibi çalıştığı şekilde) . What electrolyte you use, water + alcl3 ? , The alcl3 have yellowish like milk, its sign impurity of Iron, I dont think its aluminium will survive in it, i have try 3 week aluminium foil dissolved completlely, and i try ionic urea/alcl3 the aluminium foil not dissolved in 4 month but there are sign of corrode like many small holes, because there a bit water from air (moisture) exist in electrolyte forming HCL, and it corrode aluminium, the solution i think is use high purity aluminium like more than 99.92% and 99.98% electrolyte purity, and free from moisture/water, i guess the impurity will make new side reaction, and the electrolyte must free from water
I used sodium hydroxide. This is a typ of aluminum air battery so it’s normal the electrolyte deplet aluminum, the battery produce electricity via this way. But as the aluminum is very thick it will take very very long time to depleted completely.

dostum kolay gelsin bu videondan şöyle birşey aklıma geldi sürekli elektrolit boşaltma gereği kalmayabilir. 500 ml lik iki adet pet şişenin kapaklarını sırt sırta yapıştırsan kapakların ortasınada kısa bir pipet koysan alttaki şişeye bu pili yerleştirsen. Daha sonra üstteki pet şişeyede sıvı yağ koysan. Pil kullanılmadığında pet şişeler ters dönse ve anot ve katot yukarıda kalsa. elektrolit sıvısı sürekli özgül ağırlığından dolayı aşağıdaki pet şişenin içinde kalacaktır. pile ihtiyaç olduğunda anot ve katotun bulunduğu pet şişe aşağıda kalacak şekilde tekrar çevirsen.bu sayede sürekli olarak elektrolit boşaltmak zorunda kalmasan...bilmiyorum anlatabildimmi?

Pil kullanılmayacağı zaman ters çevirsek elektrotlar yukarıdaki pet şişenin içerisinde yağın içerisinde kalsa, elektrolit ise ağrılığından dolayı aşağıdaki pet şişede kalsa???
Merhaba kardeşim evet çok iyi anladım ama olay şu ki bu elektrolitin sürekli yenilenmesi gerekiyor, boşaltmaktaki maksat sadece pil çalışmasın diye değil. Çünkü alüminyum eridikçe elektrolitteki sodyum hidroksit tükeniyor ve yeni elektrolit eklemek lazım. Yoksa fikrin harika 👍
@@joyofelectronics9782 bu yolla hızlı şarj olabilen süperkapasitörleri boşalmaması için elektrolit içerisinden çıkartırsak ihtiyaç olduğunda kullanılabileceğini düşünmeye başladım
