Rocky is a 1976 American sports drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. It is the first installment in the Rocky franchise and also stars Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, and Burgess Meredith. In the film, Rocky Balboa (Stallone), a poor small-time club fighter and loanshark debt collector from Philadelphia, gets an unlikely shot at the world heavyweight championship held by Apollo Creed (Weathers).
Rocky entered development in March 1975, after Stallone wrote the screenplay in three days. It entered a complicated production process after Stallone refused to allow the film to be made without him in the lead role; United Artists eventually agreed to cast Stallone after he rejected a six figure deal for the film rights. Principal photography began in January 1976, with filming primarily held in Philadelphia; several locations featured in the film, such as the Rocky Steps, are now considered cultural landmarks.[3] With an estimated production budget of under $1 million, Rocky popularized the rags to riches and American Dream themes of sports dramas which preceded the film.
Rocky had its premiere in New York City on November 20, 1976, and was released in the United States on December 3, 1976. Rocky became the highest-grossing film of 1976, earning approximately $225 million worldwide. The film received critical acclaim for Stallone's writing, as well as the film's performances, direction, musical score, cinematography and editing; among other accolades, it received ten Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Picture. It has been ranked by numerous publications as one of the greatest films of all time, as well as one of the most iconic sports films ever.
Rocky and its theme song have become a pop-cultural phenomenon and an important part of 1970s American popular culture. In 2006, the Library of Congress selected Rocky for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[4][5] The first sequel in the series, Rocky II, was released in 1979.

If you really love the character of Rocky, I recommend you watch all the films (Rocky 2, 3, 4, 5, Balboa (6) and Creed 1 & 2). You'll follow the ups and downs of Rocky's life. The quality isn't always equal, but they're all worth watching.

This. It is a flawed film, but has some great moments and contributes significantly to the character arcs in subsequent films.

You have to watch at least the first 3 Rocky films They are the gold standard of the series.
Rocky was released December of 1975. Star Wars was released May of 1976, 5 months apart.
The steady cam was invented for Rocky. Before cameras were so big they had to be mounted on a rail system or a vehicle. The steady cam is why you get the iconic stair run and the intimacy of the fight that gives you the sense you are there.
It was actually used in Bound for Glory and Marathon Man before Rocky (and existed before all three as opposed to being made for any single film).
You had such a unique perspective. So many times I thought you were clueless, then realized, we have very different life experiences. Wow. So intriguing. I may be back to comment further after I think k about it.

For sure watch the Rocky films the rest of the way! They are pretty similar in quality at least through 4. I would at least go through to 4 since it is referenced in Creed pretty heavily.

The turtles make good soup comment by the old man is rarely appreciated. In the era of his youth, canned turtle soup was popular. Especially during the 1930’s depression era. Currently turtles are on the endangered species list and are not hunted in the US.

I’ve never watched the Creed movies but smart move starting at the beginning because you probably won’t understand references made in the newer stuff definitely with Karate kid because C-K is based on the 2 guys different side of things. Enjoy

Just watch the Karate Kid and KK II. As for Rocky there's six total. But Rocky I-IV are the best. Rocky 5 kind of stunk, but the last Rocky. Rocky Balboa is pretty good too.

and all these people always say don't watch 5. 5 may be the weakest to some folks, it's a lil less, i aint gonna lie, but if you love rocky by then you'll have to watch just for the story and character development. rocky balboa (6) CAME OUT LIKE 25 YEARS LATER after 5

Rocky 1, 2 and 3 are my personal favorites although 1 has a special place in my heart. The First and even second Karate Kid are definitely worth a watch, I didn't like the third one because Ralph Machio wasn't in it.
Part.2 is considered the greatest movie ever made.
Go to Rocky4 and then switch over to Creed! It will explain the Creed series!

Watch all except 5. Even Stallone says he regrets 5. Rocky Balboa is the best since the first one.
