Felt like spoiling you all a bit with a double upload today, and this one with video! AND from Xenogears! Do you love me? I hope you do. I had been trying to record this one all week and kept flubbing it, but finally managed to get a semi-clean take tonight, so here you go!
Arranger's thoughts: When I decided to do this piece, the interpretation began from the beginning, starting with the title itself. Bond of Sea and Flame. What does this title express to you, when you read it? For me, bond was self-explanatory, as the coming together of two things, but what really interested me was the "Sea and Flame," aspect. Water and fire...two things that couldn't be more diametrically opposed. What would a bonding of these two things look like or, more importantly, sound like? What other things can you think of that play with the idea of the coming together of two very different things?
For me, it immediately made me think of Yin and Yang, and from there, the idea of "the masculine," and "the feminine." This became an idea I couldn't shake and was ultimately expressed in the piece with the interplay between the melody and the bassline. I became very interested in the idea of a man and a woman, singing together, and the way their vocal differences would come together in harmony. So, when you listen to the piece, after the harmonics in the intro, picture it as two individuals singing. You have the feminine, floating on top, supported by the masculine underneath. This was why I didn't simply make the bassline repeat over and over like the original but changed the rhythms up as it went. It's two simple melodies, layering on top of each other, both of equal importance.
When you perform this piece, I want you to keep that in mind. The bass, rather than being secondary, stands on equal footing with the melody. You'll notice I was making an effort to add vibrato in the bassline, to really bring out the idea that this was a male SINGING, rather than simply being notes played on a guitar. The bass needs to ring clear and true, and not be overpowered by the melody above it, but support it and add to it. With that intention understood, you can then add your OWN voice to it with your interpretation.

Awesome. The harmonics section really captures the magic. Thx for the upload!

I'm glad you liked the harmonics there, I thought it'd be fun to try and emulate the intro and it happened to fall on natural harmonics, so I knew I had to have them in there!

I also like how clear the bassline is - the melody does not overshadow it

@@JK-vf2hp This is a very astute observation, and it was something I was actively paying attention to both when I arranged it and when performing it. I had considered putting a "thoughts about the piece," at the end, to kind of explain my thoughts as far as how I was interpretating the piece, but I thought people wouldn't like a bunch of talking at the end or beginning of the video, especially if they listen to this in a playlist or something. However, just for fun, I updated the video description to express the ideas I would have talked about, so if you're interested in a bit of a deeper understanding how I think, and just how spot on you were with noticing the bass aspects, feel free to give it a read if you'd like. :)

@@kabukibear Thx for sharing your "Arranger's thoughts" - I always appreciate this kind of thing. Your interpretation w/ the yin and yang is rock solid

I definitely will make more of an effort to record myself playing. It's a LOT more work, this one took all week before I could get a SOMEWHAT clean performance. Doing a recording in one take is HARD!

Personally think Xenogears is Mitsuda's best work, one of the reasons it's still my favorite game of all time. Can't wait until you get ALL the tracks done! Also, like others said, love it when you play live.

I agree, Xenogears is fantastic. I also like his other less well known stuff. If you haven't checked out Sailing To The World, you're in for a TREAT.
And yeah, I feel you on the live stuff. I know everyone prefers that. If I had multiple cameras it would probably happen more often, because if I flubbed a part I could always cut to a different take with a different angle. But as it stands, I have to play it perfectly in one take, which is a lot harder than people give it credit for.
And because I'm so anal retentive about that, if I miss a note I stop recording and start over, and it just takes FOREVER. But I am definitely trying to record more live stuff for you guys. :)
