Ken Takakura is (was) a famous real-life Japanese actor, known for his roles as a the strong, silent type. He was often a samurai, a cop, a yakuza, etc. A manly man type, basically. He died in 2014 at 83 years of age. He was also somewhat known internationally because of his roles in some Hollywood movies like Black Rain and he was often labeled "the japanese Clint Eastwood". Momo having him as her personal "celebrity crush" is SUPPOSED to be at least a bit unusual because he's not exactly "young girls material" nor known primarily for his "hot look". It would be basically the equivalent of having an American teenager today having a crush on Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando or the already-mentioned Clint Eastwood. Momo gets flustered/surprised by the kid causally repeating one of Takakura's famous lines ("I'm an awkward fellow, after all"), before the show drops the bomb revealing he ALSO shares the full name with the actor.

@@TucoBenedicto I agree, but even in his youth Takakura was a bit on the rougher side. Eastwood was more of a pretty boy when he was really young (the definition of pretty boy is definitely "prettier" than it used to be). Takakura definitely had more of the gritty masculine look.

Sakazaki...Bunta Sugawara Issho...Shintaro Katsu Borsalino ...Kunie Tanaka Characters modeled on Ken Takakura have not appeared in "ONE PIECE," but he is close in age to the above Japanese actors and is more well-known than they are. He may eventually appear in "ONE PIECE" as a powerful character.
This episode is (among many... MANY other things) a 20 minute set up for the final Ken Takakura punchline. And it's executed to perfection. Also, that UFO explosion perfectly timed to the moment Momo's mind (and heart) gets completely blown away is peak anime adaptation. It's one of those cases in which the manga used the a perfect ending for its medium (a two page spread of Momo's face being completely bewildered), but that wasn't well suited for anime, so they picked something else that worked much better in animated form. And they´ve kept this level of quality up until now. So you're in for a treat.

It's a common joke among this series' audience (both anime and manga) that Dan Da Dan is basically "every possible genre rolled into one show". Yeah, it's a bit crazy but it works. And it keeps getting better and better over time, too. The manga is known for its stunning artwork. The anime obviously simplified that aspect, but elevates other elements with music, animation, editing/montage and some genuinely excellent voice acting.
Welp, like almost every girl currently are going to that direction. She's got te vibe, like a Bayonetta type thing. If she decides to do that, good for her.
DanDaDan is a wild ride so far, I'm so glad to see your reactions to it! Just on a personal note, both Apothecary Diaries and Dungeon Deshi are in my personal top 3 of the year (behind Frieren) so I'm looking forward to watch you discover those as well!
Honestly, I love how simply and purely excited you got even just explaining your though process when approaching anime, this series goes all over the place, but in a really entertaining manner, youre in for a treat

First time catching your review. Excellent job! I stumbled across Dan Da Dan right when it launched. Someone called it wholesome and you know what? It IS! Yes, that scene with Momo restrained was uncomfortable, and there's a scene in a future episode that is, um, TV-MA awkward (but hilarious) to say the least, but the heart of the show are kids coming of age, finding a place of belonging. The manga & anime shatters genres. Like life, it's a mixture of everything: Comedy, drama, horror, sadness, joy, and love. From this very first episode, I've recognized this show for what other lovers of Anime have: An instant classic, up there with the ranks of FLCL, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Cowboy Bebop. In other words, you've picked a gem of a show. Enjoy the ride!

I think he and ol' T-granny were able to go through the phone is because, in a lot of paranormal ghosty type stories and shows, ghosts and spirits have some sort of control of electromagnetic frequency or radio waves. Like being able to mess with lights and TVs and talk through radios and stuff. Cell phones use radio waves and EMF to a degree, so I think that's where they were going with that.

Currently this is my favorite series on air. It is really awesome that more people are reacting to it. But I am surprised how few people know about Ken or Turbo Granny and other Japanese / occult lore.
You can see Ken Takakura (Japanese actor) on the movie called ‘Black Rain’ who was acting as a Japanese cop helping Michael Douglas. He was known as one of the coolest guy in Japan. Funny thing is this main character Ken often uses Ken Takakura’s catchphrase which actually young generation people never know except his serious fans or older people so I’m kinda assuming this cartoonist is an old guy or a huge fan of Ken Takakura.

So get used to it😂 32:59 Yups the dynamics is why the pilot episode have such title. And always remember despite everything that would happened in the future they are teenagers. On other notes that poll list is impressive, also FMAB and Dandadan both my favorites coz they are not just rely on their vibes and stunning art but everything that happened in the story tied to each other so we get beautiful tapestry of storytelling. Being confused is the expected result after the first episode, and it will last a while. This show sets up a lot of things that don't pay off until much later, some people hate that, but I for one love it. Episode 7 is a heavy one though, make sure you are in a good headspace for it and have some emotional support items/people around for that one.

Incidentally, he has been super handsome since he was young. the show is cool because it borrowers from so many different genres and blends it all really competently and stylishly, but it's bones are really a romance story.

Currently this is my favorite series on air. It is really awesome that more people are reacting to it. But I am surprised how few people know about Ken or Turbo Granny and other Japanese / occult lore.
You can see Ken Takakura (Japanese actor) on the movie called ‘Black Rain’ who was acting as a Japanese cop helping Michael Douglas. He was known as one of the coolest guy in Japan. Funny thing is this main character Ken often uses Ken Takakura’s catchphrase which actually young generation people never know except his serious fans or older people so I’m kinda assuming this cartoonist is an old guy or a huge fan of Ken Takakura.

On other notes that poll list is impressive, also FMAB and Dandadan both my favorites coz they are not just rely on their vibes and stunning art but everything that happened in the story tied to each other so we get beautiful tapestry of storytelling. Enjoy it!!
Being confused is the expected result after the first episode, and it will last a while. This show sets up a lot of things that don't pay off until much later, some people hate that, but I for one love it. Episode 7 is a heavy one though, make sure you are in a good headspace for it and have some emotional support items/people around for that one.
