chewy, I wish you would have told me this before I bought my house a few years back.... great floors but the basement leaks ... bjj even helps you buy a house better lol
I would like to see a video about what fundamentals and basics are. If you read me chewy, just wanna say that your videos are helping me a lot. Thank you for that !!
Base. Eternally base. I've been rocking a lot of base/sweep positional drilling, basically rolling where the only objective is to pass guard and maintain mount, while the bottom guy tries to sweep the entire time.
Amen, I’ve had 3 private lessons on the same move and have learned something new about it every single time. This is in addition to my regular group training.
As a black belt trying to convince white belts the basics are generally the best is more frustrating than it should be. I rarely if ever try to get fancy knowing how it can end
Hard to focus on fundamentals when the bjj gym I went to just throws all levels and belts together and teaches them all whatever move they’re working on that day. Would have really appreciated a class that taught step by step the most important things to know and laid a foundation to build on.
thats how my gym is right now. i've been going for about 2 weeks and think I'm going to take some time off to practice my funamentals. john danaher has a free video series of 160 minutes worth of instructionals on solo drills to practice fundamentals and I think I will work on my cardio during this time as well. in a couple months I'll re-approach taking another in person class but right now there's a lot of basic ground work I have to do to get myself at the physical state I should be at. since your comment is a year old I hope you've progressed far in your bjj journey!
Yes the great majority are like that. Your right and it’s frustrating. So what I do is pay for a private class once a week to learn the fundamentals, and it’s helped tremendously
This is currently my issue as well. I keep asking when we are going to learn fundamentals and they just keep telling me to “show up” it’s my first week and I’m learning single leg X.
Hey Chewy - Have bought a couple of your instructional series and I absolutely love them! Could you put together a list of the 'basics' white belts should know? It would be great to get your insight.
I’m a stand up fighter. When teaching I normally teach white belts 90% straight basics and maybe 10% something advanced as a sort of carrot on a stick to keep them interested. Like a spinning back fist for example on pads. I then explain that the basics are essential in doing that spinning backlist correctly.
This is soooo true!! Everytime we go over the techniques there us always something i never saw as important before. They are not called fundamentals for no reason!!!
@@travisanderson8458 EXACTLY that's what's beautiful about going to other BJJ coaches, it can be the same fundamentals or different but either way they all work together!
Fundamentals are the very basic and minor details that are easy to overlook. They stay relevant regardless of the ruleset or the current meta game. Fundamentals inherently create consistency in one's performance. Here are some of the fundamentals I can think of: Base Balance Posture Framing Guard retention Managing over/underhooks Grip fighting Submission prevention Hip movement
I have the same question as @Mr Wizzykin! At class we learn what I'm assuming are fundamental moves and I try to retain them as much as possible, but it would be nice to have a list of fundamentals to study and practice outside of class as well (I expect this would also help me retain more from class even if they aren't the sames moves, since it would make my brain more accustom to the terms and concepts). The most effective way that I've found works for me, when practicing ANYTHING, has been to learn the principles and to learn how to do "simple" really well.
Going to a new BJJ gym next Friday. Have a little experience over 12 years ago. As a contractor this advice is excellent and I will be emptying my cup and focusing on building my foundation. Thank you 😎👊🙏
I like focusing like 80% on basics and 20% on some fun silly shit. My style is very wild and scrambled as it is. And yeah focusing 100% on basics would probably make me improve quicker. But giving that 20% for fun silly shit keeps my interest.
as soon as you said rubber guard i stopped the video and went looking im sorry but im flexible too and that guard sounds interesting and im not familiar with that guard EDIT: WHEN I WENT TO SEE THE GUARD THE NEXT VIDEO WAS YOURS WITH THE TITLE (STOP FOCUSING ON WHAT YOU DONT KNOW AS A WHITE BELT, OKAY IM BACK)
have had some years of martial arts, but less than a month into bjj. Have really enjoyed your frank and easy to watch videos. Your vids feel/sound more natural than others. Thanks for all the great content. Query for you: Coach keeps throwing me with heavier guys, but doesnt want me to use explosive/quick movements, how should i compensate for the weight difference(10-20kg+)? I can do well with the heavier guys if im on top/side, but when theyre on top the weight difference is significant.
This is the same for all sports. Typically, people like to focus on the cool moves, the show-stoppers - but... you have to always practice the fundamentals, no matter how good you think you are.
Foundation BJJ works against larger opps, while fancy stuff easily gets shut down against stronger people and can get you injured more easily, but let people try out the fancy stuff, most of them will learn the superiority of Roger/Marcelo ways.
new to BJJ been at it about a week, what you are saying is to stay focused on basics, white drills and a solid foundation? Is it bad that a school teaches advanced belt techniques instead of having new white belts focus on the basics. Thanks, and your advice is really on point.
I'm still learning the fundamentals even after 8 years of training I'm still a white belt but sometimes the higher belts underestimate me cause of my rank but most of the time time I catch them or end up getting good position during the roll still learning everyday
I'm a one stripe white belt and I've have been training for 4 months in the fundamentals class in my gym. I intended to stay in the fundamentals class for another 3 + months in order to build a solid foundation, is this a good way to start my bjj journey? Many thanks.👍🏻
As much as I would want that Danaher instructional set, this is a requirement lol. I mean sure I rubberguard and invert for shits and giggles when I see the opportunites, but there's no point of me getting that instructional set if I can't even get to those positions lol
I’m about 7 months into jiu jitsu. Right now my schedule only really allows me to go to my gyms all levels class. We do a lot of basic takedowns which I appreciate, but on the ground we do more advanced stuff. How would you suggest I focus on fundamentals when I don’t get the chance to do many fundamentals classes?
I guess I'm just an oddball... buying my first house about 5 years ago I walked into a home and I would keep seeing things that were wrong with the foundation. I vividly remember walking into this home and noticing a very minor crack running along the length of the ceiling and what appeared like a slight slant in the floor (neither my realtor or my wife noticed it until I pointed them out and they really looked at it). We then went back outside and looked at the home, saw a crack in the foundation and told the owners... they had it inspected and unfortunately for them they were not allowed to sell the home without fixing the foundation.
i know everybody always talks about the basics but what really defines basic?? is it the type of guard you're playing and/or type of sweep you're utilizing? considering i love the lasso and spider guard as a white belt since I'm able to maneuver my hip unlike the full guard. there isn't really any set in stone type of guidelines that'll tell you these are the basics. So what are the basics? lol
We could go about building a good definition of "basic" for this context by starting with the general definition. According to Merriam Webster, that which is "basic" is "of, relating to, or forming the base or essence." We can cross-apply this to Jiu-Jitsu. We know that there are certain positions that arise more often than others, like mount and side control. We also know that there are certain positions from which a plethora of other positions can be reached, like the "basic" full guard leads into the "intermediate" or "advanced" lasso and spider guard that you mentioned. These are thus "basic" because they serve as a starting point or point of transition for just about every other Jiu-Jitsu position or technique. Thus, in Jiu-Jitsu, "basic" positions are those that most often become relevant while grappling.
Mr. Chewy I don't know if is the camera that you use today or is the light. But in this video you eyes look tired and off. Sometimes in the mat can happen accidents that could affect your vision. So if you start to seeing flashes of light run to your ophthalmologist. Take care.
Going to start BJJ very soon I was wondering when I'm rolling with a blue belt and up how much should I try fight a submission if I kind of see it coming obviously they're going to get it regardless but how far do I go defending it ?
Don't let anything get hyperextend obviously but defend safely until the very end.If you get caught over and over in the same position use that to find little intricacies of spacing, shrimping out, just trying out different things in a defensive mindset. If someones controlling you in a certain position for a certain amount of time, take that advantage to start getting crafty, not letting them get what they want so easily.
If you're brand new just tap to locks as soon as they get something locked in. E.g they are in armbar position or isolated an arm with a kimura. Chokes you can try and fight for a second or two if they arn't tight. Like standing out of a triangle Otherwise you're gonna feel it and tap anyway. If they are cranking your neck just tap and go again. Spending a minute struggling in a bad arm triangle will just cause you harm and your going to tap anyway
Uhh...Chewie, please film all videos in your usual spot in the school. Let's not reinvent the wheel here. We are used to seeing what we normally see. The mats in the background or the occasional train track when you go for a walk. Stop this right now

Even your basics are basics for a reason. You’ll never get to that fancy inverted flying arm bar in a real roll if you have all these missing pieces
Not going to lie, I walk into homes and look at the foundation because my job is supplying the forms for the foundations haha.
