You can't pay two people off of that. I remember years ago I calculated that I would need about 50K subs (back when I had a channel under a different name) to be able to quit my job and just cover my basic expenses. This video blew up, so I checked Social Blade and he has received more than half of those subs since posting this (27.7K).
So unless you know his personal story, I don't think there is any way you can tell if he was able to hire someone to do all of this for him. The fact that he plays piano and programs drones tells me he's a jack of all trades, so I wouldn't be surprised if he edited everything himself as well.

for tracking instead of opting for camera tracking I think you should use a proximity sensor with a transimitter and a reciver. It would be cool if you made a hat that had a sensor in it. And when you wear the cap the two sensors will communicate the distance away from the top of you head and the umbrella. Then the umbrella would stay locked at a offset of around 2 ft from the top of your head. I feel like it would be a cheaper and more accurate way of tracking.

Tip 1: rather than a camera, you already added a gps, why not link it to a wearable signal device and program it to always stay a certain distance directly above it.
(A camera would waste more battery, mistake other people for you, etc. But a locator would keep it above you specifically.)
Tip 2: best not to wrap your device in plastic wrap, or you may burn out your device. It is better to either leave as is or make a protective shield if you are worried about it and add a fan to keep it cool.

I think a Bluetooth connected beacon would be a lot more accurate/responsive.
You could add 2 transmitters to extremities of the umbrella to allow triangulation of the signal.
As a poster below says, this can be done with a mobile phone although I don't know any off-the-shelf software to do it.
You would configure the device to hover a set distance above the phone which sits in you pocket.
Edit: Thinking a bit more about it and would be better to do the whole thing "passive" using 2 receivers to process the phones Bluetooth signal for triangulation on the umbrella itself. No need for an App, just a Bluetooth connection to the umbrella.

Damn it, well played Sir. I had this idea in 2015 when walking across the road from my workplace to a cafe while it was raining. I had the idea that you could probably replace the concept of umbrellas if companies and city councils pooled money to create "follow me drones" at each intersection, during high traffic, they could create a temporary shelter across the whole pedestrian crossing and then go back to charge, you would ideally have multiple batches so that they'd have enough time to recover after running for a minute or two straight

    - tether wire with small pack for battery to allow longer flight
    - weather alerts with cellular data, automatic deployment.

For a simpler approach to make it follow you, you could try using some sort of a physical tether that nudges it in whatever direction you're walking. Initially you could try something like a cord attached to a strain gauge, but perhaps a simpler mechanism could be in the form of a rigid attachment, which would also help to stabilize it vertically in the event that it runs short on power.
Seriously though, this was a neat project and it's nice to see someone do something like this for real.

or even just see this version tested in public. Get people's reactions as it follows you down the sidewalk. Test it in a bit of wind. Increase the flight time (adding more battery to the limit of the carrying capacity). Make a parking station by the door where it hangs and charges...

I thought about this concept when I was like 17 (now 31) and I swear I thought we would've had this by 2023. You my friend, are a genius. I full sketched up my designs too. Mine was a little elloborate, included a pen like device to clip on to you as a reciever for the drone, but the drone umbrella itself, was cased in a ball that would would activate when you throw it up on the air, and from the sides of the ball itself, an extension would pop out and spread out the umbrella itself. Crazy stuff I know.

Hey first time watching your videos and wanted to just say I'm so happy I came across it!
Not even getting to the actual engineering, but I really enjoyed the effort put into the film making especially the storyline - from the beginning with the explanation of history of umbrellas, time-lapse panning with the attention to the layover audio sketching audio, really gave it a higher production quality feel, to the clear explanations with how lift/thrust works with the example, to the inserted humor with the simple vs complicated design (I personally would suggest that the music gets cut off a bit later and the audience has a bit more time to process, I think the timing was just slightly to abrupt - but it's just my humble opinion!) I'm only 1/5 way in but I was so impressed by ur beautiful narration and the hard work u put in that I just had to stop and write a comment... I usually write a comment like this once every few years haha
Please keep up the great work! You just earned urself another subscriber :)

the edit at like 5:30 was great lmao, made me flinch in shock. bro i hope u get millions from youtube.
also, as for the camera, maybe it would be easier to attach some kind of gps so it just follows the remote? camera may not work too well in the dark and also im guessing you'd have to use some sort of neural network to actually check if the umbrella is following the right person and so on (which i guess would require a revamp of the electronics you're using, including the chip). also if there is a lot of wind, maybe having a handle that can drop down optionally to switch modes may be nice.

1st flying umbrella…. Patent it! Great idea. Will probably sell with some tweak - most importantly the sensor to follow you if outdoor and stop when getting inside (or some place with a roof/cover), 2nd, lessen the noise(near silent), 3rd, option for mounting camera (useful for vloggers like you). Great work!

Instead of the remote control, you should buy some sensors so it can sense your overall body and always be on your head centre.
Also add a 24 hours lasting battery for all 4 fans so it can work all day long (Make sure to keep the battery light weight).
Lastly Patent it and give me ABIT of royalty and sell it directly or it's Patent license.

Imagine putting a sensor or camera to read the top of your head so it will automatically follow you. That would be a cool idea to add.
