      Call me crazy, but I think Magnificus may have been speaking literally on his end.

  • @lakefish7743
    @lakefish7743 2 года назад +3075

    Y'know, the reason Magnificus was the last scribe to be deleted isn't something like him being forgettable or anything of the sort. Look at his models, all of the assets that were put into his (remaining) area.
    He was the scrybe with the most file bloat; the most plans; the most data TO be deleted.
    And we never even got to shake his hand.

    • @lakefish7743
      @lakefish7743 2 года назад +410

      I take his mistreatment of his students as an attempt to use them to access OLD_DATA. It must've worked to some extent in fact, as the Goop Apprentice DOES manifest not only in Leishi's cabin at the start (in a jar), but also in two parts of P03's area. The Darkness Wizard also ""sneaks"" into P03's area as a card, and even into the credits scene (being, realistically, the last part of Magnificus' work to survive the Deletion.) Magnificus interfering with Leishi's games with a "progression-hint based in a dream" as well (in his 3D "broken" area) when the player seems to be lost, showing he has a fair bit of control in his experiments.
      He's probably my least favorite scribe too though. Unlimited power is no excuse to treat the Students so poorly.

    • @PrinceGentleKnight
      @PrinceGentleKnight 2 года назад +327

      Us not shaking his hand was his fault. He thought he could do a 400 life match when most games lasted til some got +5 damage. He was gluttonous and prideful; thinking he could make time or prolong the inevitable. His lack of handshake was his arrogance

    • @richardashendale922
      @richardashendale922 2 года назад +139

      His "mistreatment" of his students wasn't mistreatment at all. Immortality is a privilege, not a right. And that was what his students were after. Immortality, as powerful cards in his deck. How do you make sure they become powerful cards? By testing them harshly.
      @@PrinceGentleKnight The scales were literally deleted. So he improvised with a different life system. It had nothing to do with his pride or arrogance.
      I don't think you know the meaning of gluttonous... since when is it gluttonous or prideful to fight for your survival? The other two may have chosen to accept their fate but that doesn't mean it was wrong for him not to.
      If anything, it was prideful of Grimora to believe forcing death onto everyone else was right.

    • @PrinceGentleKnight
      @PrinceGentleKnight 2 года назад +83

      @@richardashendale922 yes they were… but he also though he had time in world that would be gone in minutes, to host a 400 life round of creatures no higher than 3 power. Assuming you could deal 9 damage with 3 Gem Fiends (You need a Mox), each round needing a generous 5 seconds to play out with the fancy animations he decided to add, that 118 damage per minute if there was no defense and the gem fiends aren’t killed, so you’d need just over 3 minutes in a perfect run. This was sheer arrogance that he could somehow delay the inevitable or he was capable of such feats. He is a respected and quite extraordinary scribe and will agree his torment came at a benefit his student were willing to deal with, but his flaws outshone him in his final moments. Grimoria was pleased to present a game and while denied her boss battle she was still happy to initiate the handshake and goodbye, Leshy merely wanted to play the game and when a winner couldn’t be decided he wanted to continue until they couldn’t. Mag decided that he wanted a boss fight and a long game, that somehow he could make it possible because he was so great. So I think my original argument of the failure to handshake was his fault

      The Scrybes all picked a theme for their cards. Death for Grimora, Beasts for Leshy, Technology for P03, and Magic for Magnificus. What would be a common link between all four of their themes?
      My guess is Humanity. Human history is written by those who have been long dead before us, we have grown alongside the many beasts of our world and constantly seek to study and master them, we have developed all manner of technology to improve our lives, and even though we don't live in a magical world IRL, in a fantasy setting created by the Scrybes humans would no doubt be trying to master Magic as well.
      What do you think? A roguelike campaign where a lone human wanderer fights through a war-torn world, making allies that lend you their strength in the form of cards, all while trying to defeat the Four Warring Scrybes (who pretend to hate each other's guts but in reality, it's just acting for the plot) and their followers and bring peace to Inscryption. Leshy and Grimora narrate, P03 explains the mechanics and Magnificus makes the graphics.

    Looking back at this theme a year later, firstly, its absolutely fire, and secondly, it screams of Magnificus's desperation. If you truely look at his character, you'll find the card he represented at the start of the game foreshadows his death. He was the "Stunted Wolf", for those who don't know, the term "stunted" means "to be cut off before reaching your fullest potential". The entire game, from the beginning to his very death, Magnificus had been exactly that. From being literally cut from the game before predicting PO3's takeover, to this final fight, unable to show all he had to offer as a GM. He even stated that he knew it would happen, that he KNEW he would be stunted. Yet he still asked anyway, highlighting his desperation, "Why not simply eject the disk, Luke?!" You can tell, even if he says he knew this would happen, that he wanted to live, that he hoped what he saw was false, that he would get to express his story, just as Leshy and PO3 got to. You may say that Grimora was also stunted, except you'd be wrong, because she WANTED to die, she believed that she had already seen everything she wanted to see, reached her full potential, and that she was doing a good thing by burning the disk. Magnificus however, he wanted to live, he fought for his life, he struggled and yelled as the deletion process strangled him. And his gameplay was shit, obviously, thats the whole point of his game style. But he had the will to improve, to make a well rounded and cool story like Leshy and PO3, but he just...couldn't, and by now he knew he couldn't. So he equipped Luke with a duel disk to show him what could have been, how cool his story would have been, as that desperate side of him, represented by the undertones of "Scrybe of Magicks", fights with his impending realization of doom, represented by the prominent ticking of clocks in the background of the music. Before realising that in the end, his desperation costed him the one thing he had left to obtain...Luke's handshake. What the other two scrybes were able to obtain, due to accepting their fate. Leshy may have been the best Scrybe, but Magnificus is my personal favorite, his story was extremely underrated and overshadowed, which I think was sort of intended by the devs.

    In my opinion, I just love how Magnificus was all about the presentation factor in the game in comparison to the other Scrybes. Despite this being his final duel, he can still make into a such a hype-worthy spectacle-- while the other Scrybes simply put you on a table and deal cards in their own separate ways, this guy puts both of you onto rising pedestals and hands you a Yu-Gi-Oh duel disk and tells you that only worthy ones are capable of wear it. I bet if Magnificus had a scale it would be size of the giant numbers where each hit taken would sound like you've rung a bell tower.
    However, his card system (to me) leaves a lot to be desired, needlessly complex and full of issues, especially to someone like me-- searching for Moxes can get headache inducing especially when you're not sure what type of Moxes you have.
    In a meta sense, it's fitting for an artist like Magnificus to not think about the complexity of his creations since for some they would be too caught up thinking about "how cool would it be..." rather than for how someone else might interpret their creation.

My favorite song in the OST, filled with all the wonder and beauty that a concept like 'magic' holds, without even a real instrument attached to it to represent it's impossibility..now turned into an intense banging of drums and choir humming. Almost like an entirely different, form of magic. One that requires worship and costs to use.
    It's almost like S.O.M is meant to represent the typical style of magic, with pointy hats and special wands. A system anyone can learn with enough study and practice, that can help the world in miraculous ways.
    And A Final Duel is meant to represent the more sinister side. Tribal rituals and sacrifices to higher beings. Gods. Where every miracle comes at a cost, and only the most corrupt are willing to pay it.

    Like most people I think it'd be cool if the other two scrybes had full chapters, but I think Magnificus' gm style is supposed to be incredible presentation with terrible gameplay. You raise onto pillars and equip a duel disk for a final epic fight, but the gameplay is: okay my green mages died I need more board presence, now I need a red gem so I can play another minion, where's that red gem I've taken 10 damage already.
    I think Magnificus' students are meant to show what his campaign would be like, they're amazed by how cool he is but they're all suffering! If you get the lonely magebot card they say they prefer being a card (even being killed as a card) to being Magnificus' underling again.
    I'm sure a gem card campaign with extra mechanics could be designed to be fun, but I think it's bad on purpose, like po3's campaign having a bad story.

    I love how this fight shows off Magnificus' greed, an aspect of him we'd only seen hinted at thus far. First, by asking Carder to spare him and only him, and secondly, by insisting on a 400HP battle. Sure, he could play a regular game with you, same as the other two, but no, he's going to play until the end, no matter what, and even directly denies being deleted once to continue the game, even as everything around him falls apart. He's too prideful to accept that he's just going to be deleted with a damn good game, and too greedy to let that game end naturally.
    And in the end... it costs him the ultimate price;
    He doesn't get to shake your hand and thank you, like Grimora, Leshy, and even to an extent Po3 did.

    Replaying this whole finale, and even just the soundtrack on its own, somehow hits harder for me than it did the first time around. It's a very game-specific context, trying to play cards while files are being deleted, but the more I think about it, I can't help but relate it to more mundane situations. Like, is this what people go through on their deathbed? Struggling to recall even the fondest memories in their final moments? Because that's the way it feels to me. Especially this last duel with Magnificus.
    While Grimora and Leshy were more accepting of their fate and had somber music for their final games, this tune is more like paper-thin denial. Because Magnificus is trying desperately to hold on, even though he already knows (and admits he's foreseen) that this is where it ends. And the final quarter of the track really exemplifies that part, as even the epic music is deteriorating, stumbling over a simple leitmotif like an old music player that's simultaneously jammed and running out of batteries.

      People tend to forgive Leshy far more often just because he's a good DM, even though he did exactly what Magnificus did, but without even asking the scribes how they felt about not only being turned into cards, but also not being their true selves and becoming generic, expendable beasts instead. On his end, Magnificus is the key behind stopping Leshy's craze and restoring the scrybes and the game.
      Yeah, the students are put in horrible situations, but not only are they actually honored to go through those trials (while Leshy only supposes that the scrybes would be honored), but he probably already knew what the issue of the trials would be.
      Apart from his students, he's not really a dick towards anyone, man's just depressed cuz of the inevitability of his death

    Fun facts
    When you look into the rulebook for the card effects, there are some funny special symbols and effects Like:
    - Virtual reality: When you have a VR-Device connected you can play cards with this Symbol for free!
    - Edaxios Parts: When combined with the other Edaxios Parts you win instantly
    Also there was a funny one and a intresting one in Grimoras Rulebook:
    - Summoning (or what was it called?): When you have a microphone connected you can play the card with this symbol for free by saying "Bloody Mary" 13 Times in a row
    - Hauted: when a card with this symbol dies that field gets haunted and when you play a card on that field, the effects get replaced by the "Haunted" effect (I believe that might be a hint for a dlc, because that sounds like a real and useful symbol because you could replace the brittle effect with this effect :0)
    Oh, and another easteregg I noticed in the Final Duel, was that when you watch the data that gets deleted. "Minecraft" is one of the Datas that gets deleted.
    Did you find some other eastereggs?

You can even hear the destinct "card destruction sound" from act 2 in some parts of the theme like here. It genuinely surprised me that this game was so good. I thought inscryption would rely entirely on the meta bullcrap and have little other substance, like pony island, but no, the game has thought out, strategic gameplay, fantastic art direction, and uses the meta stuff as an excuse to try all sorts of new mechanics and styles. I and many others finished the game wanting more of the core gameplay, and the meta stuff actually enhanced it, instead of being something the game relies on. Only glaring flaw I can see is the existence of ouroborous, which really needs to have it’s damage and health buffs reset every match. Other than that, phenomenal game.

    • @kevinm5940

    • @alacer8878

      The way I see the Ouroboros, it's used as a method of guaranteeing you'll get access to every part of the game, if you're just there for secrets and lore. Things like creating the ancient obol are gated by RNG, and if you didn't have a way to farm foil for card packs, you might never speak to the bone lord. Or get the purple key from the mycologists. The ouroboros provides that method of farming. In act 1, it isn't a necessity for secrets, but in acts 2 and 3 it very much can become useful.
      Also, if you haven't seen it already, Kaycee's mod, a DLC dropped recently. It's basically endless Act 1, and in that the ouroboros resets between runs.

    • @UhrwerkKlockwerx
      @UhrwerkKlockwerx 2 года назад +2

      At least Pony Island actually had a *really good* meta aspect that made the game interesting and made it actually function, whereas in Inscryption it felt really forced, offered no progression plot (it didn't add any substance even during the multiple resets, you could go the whole game without the meta crap and it would make perfect sense), and I didn't like the use of it.

    @brogoyle 2 года назад +16

    honestly for me the hard truth was that all 3 acts had their own incredibly important piece to the story, and that I couldn't really imagine how a playable grimora or magnificus would fit into it. Act 1 hinted at something amiss with not only Leshy but with the game itself with the new game feature being missing, death cards that you didn't create, and of course the talking animal cards. Act 2 basically establishes the true entire premise of Inscryption with Leshy only being a 4th of the scope, the identity of the talking animals, and your copy of inscryption not only being played by someone else, but was possessed by others in the past as well. Lastly Act 3 not only pumps up the metanarative to an insane degree, but establishes the true oroboros cycle of the scrybes, and with PO3's plan being the most cataclysmic yet, potentially uploading the old data for all to buy inscryption, that cycle had to end. Perhaps that's also why the oroboros not only persists in every act, but gets stronger upon every death too, the cycle is endless, but more dangerously, continuously getting worse.
    Grimora & Magnificus's campaigns in the scope of Inscryption's stories however are more likely than not redundant assuming we're going to make them Acts 4 and 5. The best I can come up with is them preparing you to defeat the old data, but idk, I think it was an incredibly wise move to end the story here and give both a piece of what they'd look like, not only for obvious development costs, but I don't know what I'd think if the finale as it is came after both of their campaigns, I'd either be exhausted, and/or left with no surprises. A Kaycee's mod equivalent for both would be absolutely fantastic though! Just a non-consequential gargantuan 12 course meal of fanservice. Maybe they'd have to start with Grimora first however, because everything about Magnificus's segment just screams designed for the finale. The empty white, the shock/hilarity of the duel disks, and the insane 3d graphics.

    I do believe that every scrybe can summon the moon in one way or another. We mainly saw that Leshy could capture and play the moon, but Magnificus could also paint the moon into existence. In a sense every scrybe has this ability. I don’t know exactly how or why each one would summon the moon, but I think the significance of it hold weight along with the tarot cards the trader was speaking about. Upright, the moon represents fears, illusions, and anxiety. Often meant to signify that you’re actively avoiding or hiding away from the truth.
    It makes sense that Leshy would summon the moon during his boss fight cause he was scared of losing. He loved playing his card game, and he knows the other scrybes already have a way to revert back to the original game. If he lost then he had a chance to loose it all.
    Magnificus is a bit more tricky to pin down with the moon, but I believe he was trying to summon the moon to see if it could save the rest of the data. He foresaw everything, and his own demise along with it. Magnificus was afraid of the thought of being forgotten, so he actively ran from it. Hence why he didn’t have time to shake your hand at the end. I think it would be cool to see the other two summon the moon since it seemed like a vocal point during act two, but either way very good

    A way to balance a full game with the Scrybe Of Magicks:
    - You choose what Mox color you draw
    - There is another lane used exclusively for one mox (So you can comit to one mox that nobody can destroy without buffing Mox)
    - You can play a mox in regular spaces if you want, but you cannot play monsters in the Mox space

      the first one isn't really needed. Just build a consistent deck like you can in the second act.(for example, only blue cards with blue moxes)
      The second one would limit the strategy, since you can't destroy enemy moxes, and therefore the cards that get destroyed if there are no moxes on the field would be unbalanced

    The parrelels and contrasts between each scrybe is fascinating to examine.
    P03 and Magnificus both wanted to perpetuate themselves forever and beyond the game's boundaries.
    Leshy and Grimoria were more somber in their opinion of this cycle, fine to have it continue as is or be ended as is.

      though unlike Magnificus P03 was able to succeed in that, as the ARG revealed P03 both survived and was seemingly able to complete the great transcendence in some form

      @@rumiatouhouproject Indeed, Magnificus was meant to be stunted despite his foresight gifted, to never accomplish anything.
      P03 only had his own logic as foresight, and was able to pull off all he wanted.
      The big implication of the ARG is that P03 uploaded the game we played.
      Which isn't the original inscryption, but rather a compilation of the remaining bits of the game that were uploaded alongside our protagnist's footage.
      Likely with the intent of P03 just showing off his ultimate victory, afterall he doesnt need to complete the intended transcendence if all the other scrybes died.

    In all honestly, I hope that they come out with a DLC where you can play the rogue-like portion, but can choose which scrybe was your DM, and played with their respective card styles.

      I wouldn't entirely mind if they maintained the different "board traversal" as well. Leshy has the simple branching paths, Grimora has her chessboard, P03 has a roguelike-altered variation on the "zelda dungeon" style traversal.
      I feel like they won't do it, if only because it's hard to make such a thing work in the lore, but all the same… It's a nice thought.

    I love how all the scrybes two versions of their themes
    You can actually hear Manificus's original theme "the scrybe of magicks" here 2:00 and here 4:35
    It sounds so Heckin cool
