Sput is now the drummer / co-leader of "Ghost-Note" (which also has Snarky killer percussionist Nate Werth, and often Mono Neon)... another cool group to check out!
Note that the guy on the keys is Sput Searight, who played drums with Snarky for a long time (and was the drummer who didn't realize his passport was expired and so could not fly to Europe for the "We Like It Here" sessions, which was why they had to get Larnell to fly over on no notice). Sput is from Dallas, where JD is from and I think introduced these 2.
'Awesome to see you dive into the Zildjian Live rabbit hole, man! Fun fact: The band leader Robert "Sput" Searight (who was bantering with JD in the beginning) was Snarky Puppy's original drummer. He was the guy Larnell had to replace on We Like It Here because of passport issues, and the rest is history. His work on this series, as well as VFJams (similar format, but produced by Vic Firth; also awesome) is superb. 'Can't wait to see you react to more from them. I'm a recording engineer, as well as a novice on the drums. 'Keep up the great work, as always. :)
@@StrateleStudios No worries, man. They're almost like the musical Avengers with their own little crossovers. Mark Lettieri, another Snarky member, is on VFJams as well, for example. He has a sick solo on Benny Greb's episode. But, yeah, so much content, so little time! Whatever it is you react to next, I'll be there to see it. Cheers, man! :)
Jeff, ancient brass and drum player here as you know. Trumpet, Chuck Mangione trained flugelhorn (he was a gentle teacher as apposed to German trumpet teacher), drum sets. I learned other instruments on the fly.

Man, I stumbled upon this channel at the right time. Snarky Puppy and now JD and Domi… Domi and JD Madvilliany tribute and their performance at Le Baise Sale, specifically their rendition of Scrabble by Rene Costy, are two that I’d highly recommend. Really enjoying your videos. Lots of fun watching
Just came back here to enjoy this again🎶💚🌱🤗. Maan, what a talented and cool kid!🤯🔥😃😄 Well, everyone and everything is cool here!!!!🔥🔥🔥😃🤯 And wait what: Wasn’t that little Aron (Aronthebassist) there at about 4:53 and at the end rushing up to shake hands?!😍🥰 This little guy was born to play the bass, and it seems like he is getting the right vitamins to grow here!🔥🤯🔥😄🌈❤️💚🌱👍🏼🤗 What a blessing they are to experience🙏🏼🎶💜🤗.
I already know this but they (and maybe more of Zildijan) might be a nice addition to your collection and it´s twice the fun watching it on your channel ;-) I pointed you over to Zildijan, maybe others too. Incredible music there -> Gergo Borlai (drummer too because... Zildijan ;-)
Any ideas on what that swell of static is that shows up on the softer parts and the intro? A key preset or an artifact? Either way i love it , it adds so much .
Jeff - (this is Jim, a drummer) I would say the band's timing during JD's breaks is more impressive than the actual drum breaks, since JD took a lot of liberties with what he was playing in the breaks, not really caring to set up the band with a strong "1" before they played the three eighth note riffs. The kid is talented, he's got a great foot, there is a lot of dialogue between his feet and hands, and he certainly has his own sound. But I'm more impressed with the band. And Domi is a monster player, flat out.
Love this comment! Thank you for sharing your expertise on this! Great point…JD definitely got my attention but your dead right about the skills of the band supporting him. 👏
So this tune is exemplifying something that Snarky does a lot too - there are multiple layers of rhythmic pulse, all interwoven. Listen to the horn melody - there is moderate pulse there; then listen to the bass, there is a medium pulse there (say double what the horn pulse is), then the DRUM/Percussion pulse is double that again (or JD is quadrupling at times, yikes)
I know that you can't be into Tool that much because I have a sense of what you listen to. But there is a video of Danny Carrey playing pneuma... You have to check this out on your own time. I'd love to see your reaction to it.
