Everyone was shocked when Barkov was chosen 2nd overall in 2013 after MacKinnon went 1st. Everyone expected Seth Jones 2nd and Drouin 3rd, but Dale Tallon comes out of nowhere and chooses Barkov 2nd and everyone thought he was nutso. Well, it turns out Tallon was probably the smartest man. Barkov has turned out to be one of the best if not the best player in the NHL because it's not all about goals and point totals but the intangibles and that's what Selke players do.

    • @EiraAimo

Thanks for the vid! Finally someone really digging in to Barky's greatness, which doesn't always show up on the stat-sheet. His ability to seamlessly turn his momentum form offence to defence is what really sets him apart. His imprint is all over the rink. Breakaways are far and apart against the Panthers, and when he is on the ice, they usually just don't happen. Or 2-to-1s and 3-to-2s. He certainly has the skills to be a 100+ pts/season scorer, but he never, ever "cheats" on the expence of good d. And the whole team truly has bought into that.

To say he is the best overall even though he has masterfully shut down McDavid and company… yeah I can’t say in any regard that he is the best overall. McDavids speed, skill and ludicrous production still put him as the best player in the game. Barkov hasn’t gotten the credit he deserves until very recently. He manages to do the intangibles and still produces plenty of offensive. I’ve been saying he’s the best overall player. He won’t get his flowers as long as he deserves because of other older players in bigger markets but he’s at least getting recognition. I never played organized hockey but everything I’ve learned and became decent at the video game by emulating what I’ve seen from Barkov over the last 10 years. I’m almost always the most defensive forward and I still score a lot. Maybe not as much as these losers that just sit in the neutral zone waiting for a breakaway and causing my team to be down a man when defending which is like a pk. Some of these guys are really good at scoring but the chances come so far and few because instead of helping the team and making a play to where we could break out the other way they just want us to give them the puck, then they get 7 breakaways and score 2. If I have 7 breakaways which I haven’t because I don’t put my team in that position, I think I’d get 4/7. But I usually end up 2 or 3 for 4 or 5 chances. Meanwhile I get my guys open for a few a game too. Yeah it’s a game but decisions definitely take part in the success. Arrogantly I like to say if I had a team of guys exactly like me I think it would be one of the best teams but most of the guys I seem to play with are noobs and just don’t see the same things I guess.

Barkov is a great player, but isnt the best in hockey. I think mcdavid is better but the teams they play for are vastly different and this changes how we view them. FLA is made for the playoffs, and the team plays well around barkov, the Edmonton team structure reminds me of a team like the leafs. Great high end talent, average goaltending and an ok defense. If you go up against FLA with that mix your going to get ripped up.
Though to note i think Barkov is better defensively than McDavid. Overall talent goes to MCD, which isnt a slight against barkov, hes still one of the best.

Why they choked completely in the play offs? 0 goals, like now McDavid and Draisaitl. Because the whole Panthers team plays like Sasha.

His plus/minus is way too bad to be the best player...

He has shut down Kucherov, Pastrnak, Panarin, Mcdavid and Draisaitl.
On the 44 minutes Panthers has been on pk, while Barkov has been on ice, Panthers have allowed two goals and made two goals. Against previously mentioned players.
The players have voted him the second best complete player, the most underrated player aswell. Like Maurice said, he is the biggest single reason why they are where they are now. The best player in the world, selke, and will win Conn Smythe.
Sounds like a best player in the world.

Watch the games, not stats. For example, against NYR he got 2 minuses when his team played without a goalie and another one where Tkachuck handed the puck to Kreider on PP as a lowest player. Barkov was 40 feet away where he was supposed to be in that situation. He's a fantastic defensive player with ridiculously low amount of mistakes in the whole playoff. His +/- doesn't reflect the reality because he plays with other players and always when they're taking most risks while chasing the lead etc.

We already saw Barky shut Kuch(,Pastrnak, Panarin etc..) down in these playoffs. Barkov can score clutch goals and is better defensively than Kuch.
