Oblivion I don’t know if he says that in a comic book, but in the video game ultimate marvel vs capcom 3, if the two opponents put Dormammu and Shuma-Gorath first, Dormammu calla him master. It’s pretty cool and the video game had to get that from somewhere, but I’m sorry, I don’t know from where.
My guess if they ever decided to explained this it be dormamu before he got his powers and the dark dimension he sought out shuma gorath to gain power alongside his sister from shuma gorath itself

The creator of Conan, Robert E Howard was actually friends with HP lovecraft and they respected eachothers work so much that they hid easter eggs of eachothers stories in their own works and confirmed that they are both the same universe (Canon)....this means Shuma-Gorath is actually a lovecraftian horror similar to cthulu.

Yup, and that's precisely why Dormammu is usually considered Strange's greatest villain and biggest threat- because he's actually a constant. Shuma-Gorath is presumably so much more powerful than he rarely appears as a treat as a result for story reasons. If he appeared more often, he'd surely be considered Strange's greatest foe. Heck, the legends around his power are why there are artifacts designed specifically to banish him should he threaten to appear

Shuma Gorath is the marvel equivalent of Cthulhu, a cosmic terror. The parallels of Shuma and Lovecraftian lore is definitely there.

Well, how about some Originality Force? What I'd like to see is just characters being People! Kitty Pryde and Rachel Summers have to go on the most dangerous mission of all! Grocery shopping. The X-Men have to eat, right? Perfect opportunity to let the characters have a conversation, and show some human emotions. Stan Lee often did stuff like this. If these current "writers" have something super and cosmic happening in every panel, it's no longer super. And it gets boring and meaningless really quickly.
Likewise, I'm sick of the Hulk being completely unbeatable. There's no point to a comic book character with no weakness. I wanna see someone just shut his ass down, hard. Maybe Franklin Richards could fling Hulk into a black hole.

He seems like it because Robert E Howard created him to expand upon the Cthulhu Mythos. He and Lovecraft were friends.
Shuma-Gorath is one of my favorite parts of Marvel, as he is one of the very few villains that is "unbeatable". They've done an amazing job not pulling the trigger on some villains and showing their "true power", which helps maintain how powerful they are. Lovecraft and those that followed made it a point that there were things out there too great and terrible to even understand that had form. Sometimes it is just better to keep things like that planted in stone for storytelling as you always feel a bit of despair in knowing something can never be beaten or dealt with.
I think he's simply too powerful. He's one of those we must defeat him now, before he obtains the totality of his power.

@@OllyRoger I agree. All we need to know is that he is someone that needs to be defeated before he gets started, otherwise everyone is screwed. It also puts a sense of danger for the heros knowing this thing could show up at any moment and wipe everyone out.

They choose a lot of characters not out of popularity or anything else but just if it seemed fun to put them in a fighting game
They wanted an "inhuman" designed character for the roster for the marvel super heroes arcade game 1997 (a character that isn't exactly humanoid in some way) and when Marvel gave Capcom an art book with a full gallery of so many characters, Capcom just chose him.
Shuma Gorath has nothing to do with the infinity gauntlet comic series but he was a pretty big deal for the doctor strange comics at the time and his design was pretty much enough to be "inhuman" like.
The one character Capcom absolutely wanted in Ultimate to the point they fought over his return.
Oh yeah, he is here for a damn good reason.

Haha, it's a very extreme case of a difference in story power level and gameplay power level. Shuma should be a ridiculously cheap boss character if his powers were accurately reflected in gameplay but that would be bad game design.

It’s also possible it has its roots in hp lovecraft’s work drirectly, since he worked alongside Howard’s during Conan’s first series of printings in weird tales. They both being ‘amateur’ writers at the time, in support of eachother they used a shared mythos; lovecraftian Gods in Conan stories, and similar cross over references in the lovecraft comics

Anyone, who's read HP Lovecraft, knows that Shuma Gorath is really an alternate form of one of the Old Gods in that mythos. His true form cannot be realized, because if it is realized, well, the effect would be similar to Cthulhu awakening and make everything go mad.

My knowledge of Shuma-Gorath is limited to his appearances in the Marvel-licensed Capcom fighting games circa 1995-2000 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Considering Japan's unusual "fascination" with tentacled creatures that spans 200 years (seriously), it's no wonder that he's such a beloved Marvel character for Capcom to use. Nice video.

I believe his character is the very essence of H.P. Lovecraft's idea of cosmic horror. A force so vast and incomprehensible that to completely understand him would drive any mere human mind insane. And besides, his designs are obviously lovecraftian. I like that he is this ambiguous force that we will never understand.
Shumagorath has been inspired from H.P Lovecraft's cthulu mythos especially from the charecter shub nigorath

In light of this information, the Shummy (that's what his friends call him) that appears in the Marvel vs. Capcom series has to be a significantly less powerful avatar of the real thing, otherwise he would fold Apocalypse or Galactus in half with the flick of a tentacle.

I think we found a possible antagonist for the Multiverse of Madness.
Shuma gorath looks like he could be defeated with eye drops, maybe that's why he's evil, his eye is irritated ALL THE TIME.
I think you left out some interesting details. Dr. Strange was with Kaluu in the scan saying "Here the demons we know - Mephisto, Satannish - would be like mice in a great temple" (Kaluu was referring to the dimension they were in, possibly alluding to the fact that even those demons would pale in comparison to the scope and raw energy of that dimension) Strange was with Kaluu because at that time he was a dark sorcerer, and kaluu was the evil counterpart to the sorcerer supreme. They were diving deeper and deeper into Shuma's dimensions eventually reaching the dimension right before where he directly resided. Shuma's servent guarding that dimension claims "I am as strong as I wish to be - - as strong as I can imagine!", as well as "I am not even finite!". Remember, this is the same dimension Mephisto and Satannish would be like mice in. Dr. Strange then agree's with him and instead of out powering him he fuses with him to go and finally confront Shuma Gorath. Dr. Strange had so much power at this point he didn't even consider himself Dr. Strange anymore, and as he and Shuma fought they threatened the earth which at this point was "Thousands of planes away". Eventually Strange with the power he absorbed from Shuma's servant, and all the power he gained from being a dark sorcerer managed to absorb and defeat Shuma with his own power. However this wasn't even a true defeat as Dr. Strange would become Shuma by absorbing his powers. Before he could even go back to earth he had to slowly go back through the thousands of planes of existence so he could continue to release power so he wouldn't destroy galaxies by simply being in the Earth 616 reality.
Shuma Gorath is literally just a Lovecraft Elder One or Shoggoth.

Shuma-Gorath should appear in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Its fitting. I know they are gonna use Nightmare but at least he needs a cameo to tease a greater threat way beyond Thanos, Dr. Doom, and Galactus.

You are correct, but not in the way you may think.
Robert E. Howard was Lovecraft's friend and correspondent during the early 1900's, Shuma Gorath being part of Howard's Conan stories (Krom, the God worshipped in the movie, is famous for trapping Shuma Gorath within a mountain).
He wasn't created by Marvel, having existed before Marvel comics ever existed as a company; he was incepted, or imported, into the pages of Marvel.
