  • As an experiment, I built an ultralight 5" drone using the X-Knigh5 frame. Here's how that project went...
    I don't actually recommend this formula right now. I think my 2204 motors are too heavy for this skinny frame. I later built the 4-inch version of the X-Knight, and it was WAY better. Like so much better it's kind of ridiculous! So stay tuned, I'll have a video about the X-Knight4 soon. If I build another ultralight 5" drone, it will probably use the TWIG ET5 frame by Racer X FPV, because it does support the smaller motor sizes (15xx and 16xx) which could help get the weight down even more.
    X-Knight5 Frame (featured here): bit.ly/2UQFKDB
    X-Knight4 Frame: bit.ly/33ZIpyV
    X-Knight4 BNF Drone: bit.ly/x-knight...
    Dry weight of my build: 190g
    Weight with 650mAh 4S: 258g
    Weight with 850mAh 4S: 292g
    Oh, and yes, I waterproof all my outdoor quads. ;-)

    What you discovered about the performance is why there's no TP5. There may be in the future but it'll be far closer to just a regular 5" than a super light something or other. That quad is fine. Keep it as is and wait for the new 3.2g props coming from Gemfan in the probably near future. Or if you have, swap to bigger motors and lower kv. If the kv is higher, just give it some throttle cut to keep the amps under control. Those motors are just too small for the load unfortunately. Put a 4" prop on that quad instead of those 5" props and you'll probably like it a lot.

    1. Thank you for all the testing!! Its refreshing to see more than just 1 config.
    2. TP5 or UL5 has been arround years.. at least since T1 1407. But few try it, so there still lots of things to try! (dont give up)
    3. 2204 is approx same stator volume as 1806. Its not that big. I dont think heavier motor is THE fix. Especially since without bigger battery its just dead weight.
    4. My BF tunes were both FAR from stock. Low weigth prop makes Huge difference. But, I believe the key is the tune. Maybe very low TPA (my 5ultras were under 20% throttle), or more throttle boost.
    UL5 is 5" prop, sub20g motors and sub 150g dry weigth. 2 opposite demands. Cruising, low pitch low weight prop is great. But low pitch requires fast RPM change to make good response, which is typically better on taller stator.

    I did a build using this frame using Sunnysky 1806/2500kv with Dalprop T5051CR props (very light) and it flies really well and it is 170gr dry build. Love it! Had to do some tuning on BF (that I still have to perfect) but so far I'm really happy with this build.

    Over 30 20min+ flights on my 250g 5" ultralight with RCinPower 1506 3000KV and 5030*2 (1.9g) with 1350mah 3S or 1050mah Tattu 95C 4S. Avg as low as 36-40W. I mostly do slalom, split-S and 40-50 flips/rolls. Motors cool. I killed battery down below 3.3V cell and managed 27min flight. Yaw is slow/bad because it uses the momentum of the props, and they are so slow/light.

    Have been building such builds already a few years ago
    And 2204 are the way to go
    Back then there where no aio available. I think i will build some of those builds with those new Aio's
    Great video 👌

    This frame, 1805 motors, low pitch props, caddx vista, and at least 1000mah 3s would make this an amazing slow flow and exploration quad.

    Don't give up! I like the 5" ultralight concept. Try smaller motors - I run 1806's on a qq190 5" and would be interested in de-weighting it if you succeed!

    On my 5 inch Asteroid, I use Brotherhobby 1507's. The smaller motors make alot more sense, but the battery is still the problem. Tattu R-Line 95c 850 mAH 4s is fine, but the voltage sag is annoying when flying aggressively. Gemfan Windancer 5143's are great, but the HQ 4043's V1S is even better.

    I built a Dave C FPV design 5" toothpick, I used the BrotherHobby Returner R4 1806 2850KV motors and Emax Avan 5" bi-blades, I also put a Caddx Vista in it. It flew fantastic up until the point when I did a full speed inverted yaw into concrete lol, destroyed the Vista, the crossfire nano and the betafpv aio board. Damn that was an expensive experiment lol

    should try a 4 blade prop with low pitch, i find them very good fpv video noise and thay seem to balance out the prop with the motor nice plus thay grip good in corners.

It flew real nice LOS and seemed easy enough on the amp draw.time will tell...

    I understand what you mean about it not really fitting into the 5" space, but is certainly a fun experiment. What we really need is for you to push a manufacturer to make BNF quads based off your fantastic 3" 1S quad build! ;)

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  4 года назад +1

      A BNF BabyTooth would be pretty great. I'm not sure if Kabab can pull that off, but I expect one of the other manufacturers will probably pick up on the idea before too long.

    • @Andrew_O

      @@MrShutterBug that video of yours should serve as the definitive standard for then to match. There's nothing like it on a shelf anywhere and because of the cheaper batteries while maintaining the perfomance you showed, this should rightfully cannibalize the market space of a LOT of the 2S and 3S micros out there.

  • @chrispfligler5892
    @chrispfligler5892 4 года назад +3

    Personally I think there’s too much prop there. There’s so much float going on the props can’t manage the quad. Either need more weight or less prop. Talking overall surface area here. I’m building the same but with the vista and bi blades. I’ll report back and keep up the interesting stuff!

  • @dilbertmcfly5986
    @dilbertmcfly5986 4 года назад

    Toothpick IS the future. Better integration.
    For 5", need 1806, and only good one is old BH.
    Even 6" is possible: 30g Druckbar frame, 110g battery, 20g motors, and 30g for props, camera, vtx, AIO FC, etc.
    The problem/key is the props. Very few 5" 3blade are below 3.6g. DJI style swinging/mounting and carbon fiber would save weight, and allow fast prop acceleration.
    Similar: rctimer.com/?product-1180.html
    It can be done!

    Agree that you are a bit on no man's land here, attempting ultralight 5" might be the way to go.
    Overall the toothpick concept is based around keeping weight as low as possible and in % terms as you go up in size camera FC boards etc go down in their % contribution to overall weight so diminishing returns as it goes up in prop size

    Hello,
    I've done quite a lot of testing on light 5 inch set up, and they fly great, I prefer them to my heavy setup.
    Try skiny props, like tmotor 5143, or the new Dalprop Spitfire, it should make a huge difference.
    Another thing, I still use 5 inch batteries, the motor needs its fuel.
    For information, my setups ranges from 185g to 200g dry weight on high kv 2205 motors like BH R4 2700kv.

    I build one using 2204 motors the 2700kv from RCX, they were light. (not the most powerfull motor) I do not like the motors with small bearings, but otherwise the1806 - 2500kv LDARC is an amazing performing motor very efficient and fantastic power, but uses very small bearings.....on 5 inch small crashes or unbalanced props eat those small bearings fast.

      I never got this particular drone to a state that I was happy with. I ended up scrapping it for parts. However, I have more recently build a TWIG ET5 with 1700KV 2004 motors and the new F722 AIO, and it flies amazing. Since it's an F7 I'm running 8K/8K/DSHOT600 with RPM filtering. I've been eyeing up those xnova 1804s for a while. I've got an appropriate frame I just need the motors and a new AIO board to make it work. I was thinking 2200-2400kv would be ideal for 650-850 4s but I've been wondering whether 3s on 3100kv might be better.
    Manufacturer thrust tests aren't that insightful but according to xnova the 3100kv maxes out at about 175W on the GF5030s which is about 30% lower than on 4s 3" props.
    Not sure what your objective is though, for me I want more of that toothpick flight feel, flight time, volume and cheaper smaller batteries. 3" toothpick's are great but I want a proper low light capable camera, lost model buzzer, proper antennas and maybe even a gps to feel truely unrestricted.
