This was Manchester United winning not just the Champions League but the TREBLE, Premier League, FA Cup AND Champions League in the same season which had never been done before by an English club. Note, United won their Treble without ANY corruption charges whatsoever unlike our cheating ass noisy neighbours last year who did it facing ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN CHARGES!!!
David Beckham in 98/99 was quite simply the best football player on the planet. He was just unplayable it was ridiculous. He is actually SERIOUSLY UNDERRRATED by far too many people who dismissed him purely because he married a Spice Girl.
This team was littered with absolute legends. Roy Keane, the hardest man in all of Ireland was our ROCK of a captain and had the Ginger Ninja Paul Scholes alongside him who was probably the best centre midfielder in the world then. Ryan Giggs became a United Star before he was even 18 and was still at the club, AND PLAYING at 40, in his prime he was another one who was utterly unstoppable. With the Neville brothers Phil and Gary as fullbacks and the Mighty Yip Jaap Stam who is a BIG Dutch man alongside Ronnie Johnsen our defence was almost impenetrable then but even if you did you still had to get past Schmeichel which usually didn't happen either. As for our strikers, you could see that Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole barely EVER missed and even if they did we had Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the bench who didn't miss either.
United in this era were an absolute juggernaut dismissing any and all who stood in front of us, as it should be for the biggest football club in the world. We are far from that right now unfortunately thanks to the Glazer family who also own Tampa Bay Buccs, but we now have a new part owner coming in to repair the extensive damage they have done and in turn remove them from the club entirely, we hope.

That doesn't mean that you can't have a very respectable career tho, just as having won a lot of trophies doesn't per definition mean you were an excellent football player. Filipo Inzaghi won lots of prices, scored an insane ammount of goals, but admitted he was a lousy player and just knew where to be every time to tip the ball in.The fact he was in the 'Galacticos' was truly and solely because of his pop-star-status, his overall quality had little to do with it and it showed once he joined the team...

Imo, what made this team so good wasn't that anyone was "the best player", but that they all were the best at their specific qualities, and it all worked in unison. Beckham's crosses and freekicks, Keane's leadership, tackles, and fighting spirit, Scholes' vision, passing, and versatility, Giggs' speed and dribbling, Neville's undying loyalty, Stam's physique, Solskjær's super-sup magic, Cole's & Yorke's outstanding goal production, etc. That and the fact that they had Sir Alex Ferguson orchestrating the whole thing.

Man U's two goals were scored in injury time. After the final whistle the presentation was delayed because they had attached Byan's ribbon colours to the trophy as it got to the 90 minute mark assuming they would win, then had to quickly change them over as Man U scored twice.

My eldest son has been a Man Utd fan since he was about 5 or 6. He was almost 8 in 1999 when they won the treble, and even though it was a school night we let him stay up to watch the champions league final, because how could I send him to bed when there was a chance he could see his team make history. He was so high on the emotion of the whole night that I had to almost peel him off the ceiling when it was time for him to finally go to bed, I don’t think he really slept that night. It still gives me chill watching it back now, it’s a night I’ll never forget either, or for that matter the whole season…I had never been a football fan before then, but got caught up in the progress Utd made through that season as I watched with my son…there were some pretty spectacular goals and performances from the whole squad, one worth noting was an epic individual goal scored by Ryan Giggs in the FA Cup semi final against Arsenal on 14th April 1999. Utterly brilliant.
As regards David Beckham, no he absolutely wasn’t overrated. Rather he was underrated, mostly because he was as famous off the pitch as he was on it, and people hated him because of it. His work rate, his ability to cross the ball right onto a striker’s foot in the perfect spot to score was second to none, as well as his ability to score from free kicks/penalties. His free kick in the dying minutes of an England game against Greece in 2001 was what earned England a place in the 2002 World Cup finals, he was the only player that hadn’t apparently given up, all the others had their heads down, but not Beckham, he was everywhere, all over the pitch, and when England won a free kick he scored an absolute blinder.

David Beckham was a fabulous player. I'd personally rate Keane, Scholes, and Giggs as better all-round players in that quartet of midfielders, but Beckham could do something that neither they nor anybody else in the world could do as well as him, which made him so effective, he could cross the ball onto a penny with whip and curl, he was a strikers dream come true. He was much more than just a celebrity with good looks, he was and is a Man Utd legend for what he achieved with his talent and his underrated insatiable work rate.

Beckham was not overrated, one of the best Right Sided Midfielders of all time and the best crosser of all time, one best free kick takers of all time. This Manchester United Team had a lot of stars won the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League all in this 99 season. (all in dramatic fashion) They had stars like Peter Schmeichel as a Goal Keeper one of the best of that era, one of the era's best Central Defenders of that era with Jaap Stam, Beckham on the right, Giggs on the left. Scholes one of Manchester United best ever players and Keane one of United best captains and absolutely one of the best midfielders around at the time. One of the best striker line ups of all time with Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Plenty of quality aside from the mentioned above, this was a stacked team even if no one realized it at the time.
One of the key things is the winning mentality though and never give up no matter what attitude of the players, scored a lot of late goals and made a lot of big comebacks.

    Hi Connor.
Love your channel and this video in particular.
I’m a lifelong Man Utd fan, born, bred and still living in Manchester too.
I was 18 years old in 1999, and I remember all of these Champions League games like they were played yesterday. Football was more magical back then, especially at Man Utd!
Our style of football, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still at the helm, was fast, cavalier, heroic, swashbuckling and, at times, utterly sublime!
    In the 1998/1999 season, Man Utd won an historic Treble! That’s winning 3 trophies in the same season, they were the;
    • Premier League
    • The F.A. Cup
    • The Champions League
This had never been done in England before, and I’m fairly certain, it’d never been done by any other club side in Europe either.
You definitely need to do more reaction videos on football as well, especially on Manchester United.
    Keep the reaction videos coming!

Also, I was messaging Connor directly, hence the ‘Hi Connor’ at the beginning of My message to him, so I have no idea why you’ve chirped in to this thread with your completely nonsensical and irrelevant comment. This is a video about a ‘Man Utd’ video reaction, not Man City.

Beckham - Could cross a ball with speed and whip it in like no one else on Earth and must have created a few thousand chances for strikers over the years. His fame worked against him and is an under-rated Man U Legend (not by Man U fans though, which I am proud to say I am).
Scholes - Creative mid-fielder, short and long passing master and had an eye for goal. In training when Phil Neville was leaving the pitch (70 yards away) Scholes hit him on the head with the ball for a bet with Gary Neville and Beckham (true story)
Keane - Roy "the Boy" Keane. Hard as nails and drove the team as captain. Demanded 110% from everyone around him (think Michael Jordon levels of desire to win). Used to go out and about in Manchester looking for fights and was an under -15 amateur boxer. Underrated passer of the ball and his tackling was monstrous. Purposefully knee-capped a Man City player who had stood over him and ridiculed his ACL knee injury a year before in a game (Alf Inge Harrland incident. Look it up).
Giggs - Supreme dribbler of ball, used to pass players with his silky skills, could cross and pass and had most weapons in his arsenal. Could score a goal (scored in every season he played in, something like 23 seasons) and his FA Cup semi goal against "The Arsenal" in 1999 was sublime (look that up to)
If you asked who was the best player out of that midfield four I would asy this! We won more games and lost less, when Keane was fit and playing, than any other loss of player on that team. When he went out with his ACL injury for an entire season we won bugger all. Next season when he was fit again, we were champions again. To me he was the best. Not the most skillful but his all round play (which was under-rated) and his will to win percolated through the team and took a very good team onto being a world class winning team.
For me the semi-final of the Champions League was the real "final". Juve were the best team in Europe at that point and it was a truly brilliant game. Odd how the finals tend to end up being cagey, boring affairs where a single goal wins it. Just wish Man U had signed Zidane as a player, but it was not meant to be.

I was 9 at the time & as a United supporter who lived in a house of United supporters, we pretty much blew the roof off in the last few minutes of the CL final. I can still remember every detail like the players positioning, the commentary, the reaction from the Bayern Munich players. The 1998-99 squad will always be amongst the best of all time. Sadly, the last 10yrs haven't been great for us United supporters.
Beckham wasn't overrated, he was very marketable because he was great. He certainly had a few odd moments in his career where he did some stupid things & he has certainly done so since he retired but he was one of, if not the best at what he did. His free-kicks, corners, long range passes & crosses were world class making him & United very difficult to play against.
Somewhat embarrassingly, i can also remember as a kid, i kept copying Beckham's hairstyles & when he got a buzzcut, i did. It took about 2mins for me to completely regret it & i ended up wearing a hat for months.

1999 was the year Utd became the first team to win the treble (PL, FA Cup & CL).
Utd had a really tough run to reach the final and win the trophy. Utd, Bayern and Barcelona were all amongst the favourites to win the CL that season. The phrase "Group of Death" is over used, but that year it really was.
Then having to play Inter and Juventus in the knock outs, the top two Italian sides was also very tough. The win in the second leg away to Juventus was probably the best performance, being 2-0 down to win it 2-3 away was phenominal.
In the final Utd were missing their two best midfielders, Roy Keane the captain, and Paul Scholes. It was a major blow. Bayern were the better team for most of the match, but United had a reputation for scoring goals in injury time (Time added after the normal 90 mins are up).Scoring once in injury time was dramatic, with everyone expecting extra time (another 30 mins), but then Utd scored a second injury time goal. It was the most dramatic end to any CL final ever.
The midfield 4 of Keane, Scholes, Giggs & Beckham was consider the best in the world. All world class players.
    - Beckham: Usually played on the right wing. A big part of his fame is because of his looks, loved being the center of attention and married a Spice girl. This actually overshadows his footballing talent. If anything he's under rated. At the time he was the best in the world for long range passing, crossing, corners and freekicks.
    - Paul Scholes is rated by many players as the best attacking midfielder. Phenominal technique, ball control and passing. Scored great goals too. Unlike Beckham though he shunned the limelight and only cared about playing football. he rarely gave interviews. This video will give you some idea of how good he was:
    ruclips.net/video/ETHmhvLBcQI/видео.html
    - Ryan Giggs: Left winger. His crossing wasn't as accurate as Beckham, but he was quicker and a phenominal dribbler with the ball. He got into the Utd first XI when he was 17 and played his whole career for the team. He holds the record for most appearances ahead even of Legend Bobby Charlton.
His goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final has gone down in history as one of the best solo goals you'll ever see in a fantastic match. It was a very important goal in a huge game. Utd were a man down after Keane was sent off. Arsenal were Utd's main rivals at the time to win the PL and FA Cup.
    ruclips.net/video/XgPJ8g05qOw/видео.html
    - Roy Keane: The team captain and the heart of the team. Brilliant at winning possession and intimidating the opposition. he scared the shit out of them!😀 He had a great all round game, attack, defense, tackling, passing. He could do it all.
    - Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. Tghe two strikers had an amazing partenership. Pretty much from their first game together they had an instinctive understanding. Cole was the better finisher, Yorke probably had the better ball control, vision, etc.
The other two strikers had other skills. Teddy Sheringham wasn't the quickest but he was an intelligent player and great at holding the ball up and in the air. Solskjaer was nick-named 'Super Sub' and 'The baby-faced Assassin'. Another intelligent player he was great at watching the game whilst on the subs bench and spotting weaknesses in the opposition and then coming on to exploit them. He once scored 4 goals against Nottingham Forest after coming on in the 72nd minute with just 18 mins left!

Yeah Barcelona have always been a great team. Them and Real Mardid are the two biggest teams in Spain. Barca have slightly more domestic trophies while Real have more European trophies. Real hold the record for the most Champions League (the competition Man Utd won in the video). They have 14, double of the next team AC Milan. Real won the first 5 iterations of the Champions League consecutively, back then it was known as the European Cup.
Man Utd and Liverpool are the most successful teams in England. Its a similar situation to Spain where Man Utd have more English trophies while Liverpool have more European trophies. Man Utd have won the Champions League 3 times. 1999 was their 2nd at the time, they won their third in 2008. They also reached the final two more times in 2009 and 2011 but were beaten by a Barcelona side containing Messi and managed by Guardiola both times. That Barcelona team was arguably the best team of all time or at least the best in modern times. Liverpool have won it 6 times. Most recently in 2019.
Man Utd's crosstown rivals Man city won the Champions League last year, along with two English trophies, completing what it known as a treble (three trophies in a season). Man City had matched what Man Utd had done in 1999. Man City are also managed by Guardiola, the same guy who beat Man Utd with Barcelona.

United's 98-99 treble season was indeed incredible, with many fantastic games throughout that winter. Even more spectacular than this Champions League final above, imho, was the second semi-final vs Arsenal in the FA Cup. Back then the rivalry between those two clubs was boiling hot. The atmosphere in the stadium was absolutely charged ⚡ Giggs' late goal in this game became an instant classic - everyone on planet Earth and their grandmother has seen it at least twice, apart from a few Americans, of course 🙂 Type 'Giggs wonder goal v Arsenal' for a short 3-5 minute clip if you ever feel the need to react to another football video ⚽

when you think, alot of these players played there whole career and manchester, never went onto other teams, one or two did for extra money,
it was not to much different with liverpool, teams like this come round every decade, arsenal also very similar, managers who were given time to build, these succesful teams stayed with there managers for 20 years plus, but gave them time to rebuild, the money as players retired, global names, not just the players but the teams

I didn't miss a home game all season in 1999. I just couldn't afford to got to the Champions League final with it being played in Barcelona that year. There were some amazing games that season

You asked who was the best player on this team. Their is no easy answer to that question. This team was phenomenal. World class players in so many positions. One of the best Midfields in history. The two strikers had such chemistry. Good to see you watching this video!

David becham was not overated, because you dont score, where he could put a ball was insane, assists, but you have to throw in his leadership qualities, did he make mistakes, was he the most hated man in england, yes, did he pull a goal from norhing against grease last minute so the uk could qualify yes yes yes,
im not man u fan, but if you were in Sir Alex team, you were the best of the best

conor, champions league and europa league of one of the same, best way to describe it is a A league, being the champions league, The europa league is the B league, not the best, but if your team gets into it, then its good, as you get to see eurpean teams at your ground, you may not have the money to go abroad to watch, doble edge sword

Yep, Champions League is the big one, where the best teams of Europe meet, and the Europa League is almost the same, but for lower finishing clubs.
Also yes, 100% of the ball has to go past the line and you have to project the circle of the ball to the ground, it cannot have a common point with the line.

The best players on this team were:
    Goalkeeper - Peter Schmeichel 🇩🇰
    Defender - Jaap Stam 🇳🇱
    Defender - Denis Irwin 🇮🇪
    Midfielder - Roy Keane 🇮🇪
Midfielder - David Beckham 🇬🇧 (Eng)
Midfielder - Ryan Giggs 🇬🇧 (Wales)
Midfielder - Paul Scholes 🇬🇧 (Eng)
Striker - Andy Cole 🇬🇧 (Eng)
    Striker - Dwight Yorke 🇹🇹
Keane was the captain and the heartbeat of that team. His best performance came against Juventus in the semi final but he received a yellow card, his third of the tournament so he was sadly suspended for the final. Scholes, Giggs and Beckham were the flair players, providing goals and assists. Cole and Yorke formed a deadly strike partnership that season, scoring almost 50% of Man Utd's goals between them.

There are 3 major competitions for club football; domestic cup, domestic league and Champions League i.e of Europe. Man Utd had won the F.A. Cup in May, secured the League Title 2 weeks later and were now on for the TREBLE. No English team had ever won a Treble! Funny thing is; this was also a treble year for Bayern, which is why they were so devastated at the end. I watched this in the pub and put my head through the ceiling when united scored the winning goal.

weird watching it mirrored. I wouldn't say Beckham was over rated, but others like Giggs, Scholes and Keane were thought of as equal to him. Because of his marriage and captaining England he seemed to seek fame more than others and he found it. He's probably the only British footballer the majority of Americans have heard of. If you asked Man United fans to vote for their greatest of all time, I doubt it that he'd win,but would easily be in the Top 10. Perhaps Top 5.

These are the highlights from just Manchester United’s Champions League games from the 1998/99 season. There were so many thrilling and memorable games that season, not just in Europe but in their Premier League and FA Cup campaigns too. If you could find and watch a copy of the full season review DVD, I would highly recommend it. I know there are people who think David Beckham is overrated because of his fame and there have better players but in his prime, I’m struggling to think of a better crosser of a ball, should have won World player of the year in 1999 IMO and holds the record for most goals direct from free kicks. That midfield quartet of Beckham-Keane-Scholes-Giggs used to have teams beaten in the tunnel.
To answer your question: for a goal to count, all of the ball has to cross all of the line.

The best part of this game was looking at the face of Lothar Matthaus sitting on the bench watching that 2-1. I'm not a ManU fan (Liverpool), but I can't stand Bayern. imo the best players in this tournament were Beckham, Scholes and Giggs, (Schmeichel ...no comment). Apparently (don't know if it's true) George Best was there but he left just before Solskjær scored. (Gonna have to look at the final minutes now).

Beckham was overrated in the US because he was so famous and few people there knew much about football. As a result, he's probably underrated in Europe. The truth is that he was a magnificent player, but he would never be mentioned in a serious GOAT discussion.

There's a strong argument that Beckham should have won the Ballon Dor for the 98/99 season. They gave it to Rivaldo! His looks have gone against his footballing recognition.
