When Steve Vai, at 20 years old, auditioned to play guitar for Frank Zappa, Zappa told him to learn a number of his songs, and then didn't have him play them. Frank would play a passage on guitar and have Steve repeat it, then tell Steve to play it in 7:8 time, now play it Reggae style in 7:8..now add this note, and this note....until finally it was something that No One Could Play,! Steve, is embarrassed and tells Frank he cannot play it, apologizing that he's sorry he wasted Franks time. Frank tells him, "Well, I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitar player..." The rehearsal ends a while later, Steve thanks Frank for giving him a chance and as he starts to leave, Frank says "Steve.. you're In the Band!"
Vai got his start with Frank Zappa and then went on to join 80s metal bands like Alcatraz, Whitesnake and David Lee Roth former Van Halen vocalist. Other than the various videos he had done with these bands and in his solo career, he also makes an appearance as "jack butler" in the movie Crossroads with Ralph Macchio from the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai.
Steve Vai is a Frank Zappa alum so you know he's top notch! Note "FLO" on the guitar, a reference to Flo & Eddie, members of The Turtles (Happy Together) they became members in the mid 70's. Blah blah blah, apologies I ramble.
The Mt. Rushmore of guitar gods: #1 Hendrix. #2 Stevie Ray Vaughan. #3 Eddie Van Halen. #4 Steve Vai. Vai's classic video's to watch are "Lotus Feet" from the same concert orchestra you just saw (Holland Metropole Orchestra, 2005), "Whispering a Prayer Live at the Astoria", and of course every reactor's favorite video "Tender Surrender"
Great job! But you just witnessed one of the best guitarists. You are pronouncing his name correctly. Steve has a vast catalog of music and has played with Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth and others (he did the final guitar duo in the movie "Crossroads"). Like others here, his recent "Teeth if the Hydra" release is just as inspiring ruclips.net/video/46qjDJ0lLdE/видео.html
You pronounced his last name the first time you said it... perfectly!
Boy, did we get lucky?! Hopefully, will continue to pronounce it right. LOL. Thank you for helping us with this info.
