How to use a WIDE-ANGLE on location at LÓNDRANGAR | Iceland Landscape Photography

- Lóndrangar is a pair of sea stacks in the Snæfellsnes peninsula of Iceland. They're an iconic location for this area and of course a must-see location of Iceland. In this episode I share my thoughts and experiences with wide-angle lenses while presenting Lóndrangar from different angles. I think it is very important to explore other angles to these iconic photos, so be sure to spend more than five minutes here.

Love, love, love your work. Your use of negative space and mood is brilliant. Recommend your vlogs to whoever I can. Keep doing what you are doing Mads, it is sooooo inspiring.
Thank you so much, David!
Again Mads ...... a WOW video, not only a great location but the educational part is enormous ! It's amazing how you can get a beautiful picture with all the snow blowing on the front of the lens :) Always love your work ! Like i said before you are my main (and best) influence for landscape photography !
Thank you as always, Mario! I'm happy to inspire :)
How quiet the snow pictures make you feel so peaceful.
I tend to watch your videos in batches and very carefully. Such fantastic video and stills
I'm very happy to hear that, Mark! Thanks a lot! :)
Wonderful as always Mads it looks a fantastic location and the image with the horses was superb
Thank you so much, Peter! I really like that one too!
Mads, I believe this to be one of your best videos ever. Just watching it was a powerful experience because therewas such drama in the landscape. I really appreciate the tips about foreground and DOF, etc. I'll watch this videoseveral times. Thanks for a terrific lesson in photography!
You're very welcome, Robert! Much appreciated :)
Your video had a real cinematic feel to it with the complimenting music to add. Beautiful place and thank you for sharing mads!
Thank you, Matthew! :)
What a stunning location and the photos certainly match it.
Enjoyed it! Your videos are first class among your colleagues, and even better than those with over 200k subscribers. Sometimes I believe it is the personality, not the photographic ability that attracts subscribers. Who knows, but I'm glad you do it and I really appreciate the location info on your videos, that's something else those other vloggers don't do.
Thank you so, so much, Steve! :)
The horses in the snow was wonderful. I paused the video and just stared at that one for awhile. Several others were spectacular too but that one literally made me stop. I was shocked when you said the views on your videos has declined. I don't understand how that is possible. I sincerely think you're videos are in the top 2 of all the photographers I follow on youtube (which is WAY too many). I have to believe your talent and effort will eventually win out and you'll be the icon you deserve to be in the youtube universe. I wish you the best and you have my like and comment pretty much every time. I talk about your channel to friends and fellow photography enthusiasts so hopefully that helps a little.
Thank you so much! Yeah, they have slightly declined, despite the subscribers grow. I just hope my subscribers get to see my videos, but it doesn't look like it.
I just spent 2 weeks in Iceland AGAIN! I must say I can't get enough, my soul feels empty when I return home. I will relive my journey through photo's and Videos.
I am absolutely stunned by your video. The pictures you took in weather conditions that would make me fight my cat over the spot near the oven are just spectacular. I have the same setup that you have used in this video but as of now, I only seem to be able to take very boring, uninspired pictures with it. Wide angle sadly never really worked for me so far.
Thank you very much for sharing your insights on this, I really hope that it will take my photography results up a notch.
Thank you so much for such a sweet comment, Jan-Hendrik! I hope it'll help too :)
Doing my part with a like and a comment. Shared your channel with my daughter too! I can't wait to go back to Iceland and I'm enjoying the views through your work till I can get back.
Thank you so much! It really is appreciated :)
You are one of the most underrated photographers on youtube. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge! Would love to bump into you someday!
Thank you so much, Gaurav! Means a lot :)
Superb video! Regarding stats of views: In the US many people are on vacation in July and August, and then getting ready for school so I'm sure everyone's busy and not watching beautiful photography as much. Also much youtube activity buzz is about new mirrorless announcements so technology is temporarily taking center stage. Your photography is awesome and is a blessing to people that can literally "go there" with you. Keep it coming. Your talent is a joy to watch and your ability to explain is excellent. Thank you.
Thank you for the insight! Yeah, I bet the summer had a lot to do with it. The European summer has also been crazy. People are outside instead ;)
I have the 16-35 wide angle zoom and it is one of my favorite lenses for landscape photography. You show very skilled use of that lens in your videos and come out with some fantastic images. I always enjoy your videos and especially on Iceland as I will most probably never have the opportunity to go there myself. Thank you for the great scenery and wonderful drone footage.
Another great video mate and some awsome images at the end there. Thanks for sharing and keep it up.
Thanks as always, Christopher! :)
Londranagr is amzing, also with blue skies and many colors
Those horses!
Great episode Mads 👍
Great stuff Mads! Another whopper video! Keep em coming
Thanks a lot, Neil! :)
Great video as always!
As usual, great stuff Mads. The photo at 11:09 is incredible!
Apart from the outstanding photography I am always drawn to the cinematic nature of your videos Mads. I once watched your Iceland series back to back and the experience felt much like watching a BBC documentary as you detailed the wonders of the places you visit. Truly outstanding work.
awww thank you, Robert! Huge compliment :)
Always amazed how you pull the most fantastic photos out of seemingly uninspiring weather conditions! Really appreciate all the photographic tips too, am hoping it will all sink in over time and with repetition! Keep up your fabulous work, I love all the videos (and especially the Faroe Island and Iceland series!)
You'll be happy to know I'll do more Faroe Islands videos when I'm done with this batch of videos from Iceland :)
Thank you, Mads. I always enjoy your video and editorial tour. I don’t know if I can brave the cold in the winter storms as you show. But, it is worth getting out there to get the primo shots.
It sure is worth getting out into those conditions and you're welcome! :)
Hello Mads, been a fan since your Faroe Islands series. I just wanted to say that your recent videos from Iceland while still great content, feel weaker than the content I was blessed with earlier in your channel. I personally feel your Britain series was the peak in enjoyment I’ve felt from your videos and would love to see more travel content from yourself. I love your channel, I love your photography and can not wait to see what else you do!
I agree with Justin and while I really enjoy all of the videos, I think more of info behind the scenes of how the photos were made and, more of a story telling would more appealing to me then just purely describing each location. Anyway Thanks for great content Mads!
Love this series
Another great video!
Fantastic video, Mads...brings back so many memories of being there! I’m very surprised the number of views of your videos is dropping, your videos not only look great but are very informative and helpful.
Incredible as usual man :)
13:20 - fabulous moment in time.
Thanks a lot. Yes, I really love that shot. Took it right out of the car window :)
Your drone footage is so beautiful!
Great video Mads!
Mads congratulations on another brilliant video. I think your channel is fantastic - it focuses on what landscape photography should be all about - getting out in nature and showing epic places in a beautiful inspiring way. I particularly like the way you start with practical tips about locations and then go into detail the process of creating compositions. I'm just learning and it has helped me think about a scene in a better way instead of just getting overawed and snapping away aimlessly. Thanks for the content - keep doing what you're doing!
Thank you so much, John! I'm happy to hear that and you get so much from my videos :)
spectacular as always Mads :-)
I loved the snow fence picture
Thank you, Gabrielle! :)
@@MadsPeterIversen the horse one is also beautiful i love the minimalist stuff it leaves so much room for personal imagination and emotions to cast different perspectives
Another great vid, Mads and the horses in the snow shot just awesome well seen.
Top notch in less than stellar conditions.
Excellent videography and the topic was very well covered IMHO. With each video, I enjoy your channel more, which is saying a great deal as I became an instant and dedicated fan with the very first contact. Thanks so much for sharing and Cheers from BC!
Keep up the good work. Keep it simple. You are good.
Thanks a lot, Mike! I will ;)
Oh, I had the same weather on april 1st in iceland. I was in the westfjords and so much snow there.
Yeah it just came down all at once :D
very nice photos,great
Loving the use of bad weather to generate interesting compositions Mads! Just bought a drone only to find it’s not easy to find places to fly in the UK (getting harder by the day).
Yup, I know that feeling... so incredibly annoying!
I like your style, man. Good work. Visited Londrangar a couple of years ago and loved the walk to it along the beach.
Absolutely brilliant series from Iceland you really need to make this available to buy on blu Ray or dvd it’s the best collection on you tube I would buy straight away thank you for taking so much time to make this
Thank you very much! That's a huge compliment :) putting them onto Blu-ray seems a bit like an overkill ;)
Great video Mads. I'm actually in Iceland stucked in my campervan, waiting for the rain stop in Jokulsarlon. Folllowing the Forecast, it should stop in ... 3 days 😳😳😳. At least it gives me some time to sleep more than the usualy 4 hours and also watch your inspiring videos. About the drone ban, it sur getting crazy as almost all the iconic spots get hit by this rules... I got a permit for tonights sunset at Jokulsarlon. Just hoping now the rain will stop and have some light...
Yeah... by now it's actually a good thing the area around Stokksnes is privatized xD
this was great. thanks
Super, Mads. Amazing and inspiring video. Like it a lot.
Inspiring tips and even more so because of the difficult conditions, i cant believe you dont have more subscribers, your videos are truly informative on many levels .
Dont stop .
Really love the 2nd snow image with the fence, reminds me of an image by Michael Kenna.
10:34 that's a fantastic image. Thanks for this great video.
Fascinating. I am sure those other visitors we saw briefly would have thought you plain crazy standing there with your camera in the snow shower and filming away with the B camera on a stick. Little could they realize what great images you were busy creating, and how engaging your commentary was. Thanks for enduring the elements for all of us.
Such a useful video.
Thanks, Mads!
Liked the footage of the snow and sad to say looking forward to it back in Scotland. Love going out in the mountains during winter and think places such as Glencoe look there best then.
Yes, snow has an enchanting effect :)
awesome stuff man , you raise the bar .
Very helpful video with great footage and lovely landscape shots. I do look forward to your video releases
Wonderful video and so inspirational.
I love Iceland and this video. Wish I could visit one day
Great work again love the content
Brilliant vlog mads, awesome images and beautifully presented
Lovely video once again Mads! It's given me a lot of inspiration for our trip to Snaefellsnes in October.
Hi Mads. This is a fascinating video from another stunning location. I'm really enjoying the Iceland series and your blend of storytelling and tuition make great viewing. Good to see your channel continuing to grow. Many thanks for sharing.
Hey Mads, I’ve been keeping off RUclips for a while, and doing actual photography for a change! Really enjoyed this video - it reminded me a lot of your earlier work that got me hooked on the channel. It’s been a terrible summer for wildfires here in the US, so I’m really looking forward to something different with our Faroe Islands trip in March (no smoke at least!). Keep up the great work and congratulations on the growth in subscribers! Now that summer is over perhaps you might see a seasonal increase in views...
Love that minimalist shot of the horses... my favorite kind of winter photography! ❄️
Thank you so much, Jon! I'm looking forward to our tour. It's gonna be epic!
as always, an excellent video. had similar weather two years ago on Snaefell - quite exciting.
Thanks Mads. Another excellent show. I’d love to see a show on winter expeditions in general. Equipment, accommodations, driving, using cameras and drones in very cold weather etc... ps. Fancy going on a Mongolia winter expedition? I’m thinking of organizing one.
Well I can make a video on what I do during winter in Iceland ;)
And in regard to Mongolia I don't really know what to expect of it?
Nice one - really love how you managed the smooth drone pan down for the fly overs.
Love your videos. Great images and very inspiring. Cheers from france
Just great!
Great video as usual Mads. This was extra cool to see because I was in this very spot on Apr 2, when it was already a winter wonderland. The day before I drove through a whiteout to get from the southern part of the peninsula to the northern part, where my hotel was, which was a very crazy experience.
Mads, would love to have the opportunity to take one of your workshops at some point.
Very nice video, currently planning on my first trip to Iceland and this is great to watch. Still unsure as to whether or not to go in March or wait until June/July. Great videos, keep them coming! :)
I enjoy your videos, Mads, and a sister-in-law is planning an Iceland trip so I'm recommending the Iceland videos to her. I'd suggest saying you angle a wide-angle lens "down a bit" or "down some more" rather than "45 degrees" - point the 16-35mm down by 45 degrees and you won't even get the horizon at the top of a horizontal format image, even at 16mm. Vertical format will _just_ catch the horizon but not the stacks as well.
Keep posting!
I'm happy you like them and I surely hope people won't go for the 45 degrees without looking through the viewfinder ;)
thanks for sharing. will be there next week! ;)
Is really really nice video and amazing photos👏👏
I'm amazed by the quality of your video's, the audio gives lots of great useful information, and your photo's are stunning, I like watching these so I hope to see more as time progresses, good tips about the drone, as that area can be a bit tortuous to navigate for personal use where you think you're not doing anything wrong, hope the app on dji contains these limitations.
Hopefully the app will help in the future. And I'm very happy you like my videos. Thanks a lot, Carlos :)
Great location and video Mads!!!! Would be great if you make some video's about photolocations in Denmark, I have no idea what I can visit over there!!
Thank you very much, Sander! I've thought about Denmark and I have made two videos from here. But I'm honestly not that inspired by my own country :(
Haha, I have the same with my own country (the Netherlands). Always jalouse of those people that have mountains in there backyard!!
Interesting the contents of your backpack. I see a Sony, I assume an A7R 2 or 3, and a Canon. :) probably a 5D, mk 2 or 3? Anyway, that's not important, you are the photographer and you're doing a great job, and I love your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
I'll make a new "what's in my backpack" video soon :)
Great video. And about wide angle lenses: it is true that you can almost feel the foreground, but what is in the background, becomes even smaller, so my question to you is if you ever do focal length blending, to bring the background back into perspective?
Yes I do. Not often, but I do :)
Amazing set of images Mads and I really enjoyed those snow images as well. If we had 30 cm of snow in the UK the country would shut down! lol
Haha yeah, kinda the same with Denmark ;) Thanks a lot man :)
Some how I think Denmark would be slightly better prepared than the UK.... we are terbbile when it comes to even the lightest dusting of snow! lol :-)
Very nice ....
Great video thanks! I'll be going in the summer, it would be good to get some tips on what time of year is good for certain areas.
Another great video Mads! One more location to visit in Iceland in the future. Your drop in engagement is, in my opinion, due to the fact that, in this series of video, you haven’t presented the typical epic locations that everyone is looking. Also, I think that it may be beneficial to look at exploring new locations/countries since Iceland and the Faroe Islands are the most popular locations for landscape photographers, and I feel like people need something new. My 2 cents! All that being said, I still think that your videos are some of the best on RUclips and that it is simply a normal evolution you are going through at this time. Cheers!
I agree with you that the Faroes and Iceland are getting over exposed (no pun intended). Mads gives good location info and technical advice on top of his great locations.
That's kind of a contradictive statement :D People looking for the typical epic locations and don't want something new, yet I should make something new, which is not the typical popular stuff? :D I've had all sorts of thoughts with it. It is definitely the known locations that get the most attention when it comes to my videos. Just look at the Godafoss video. It might also be that I've batched in too many Iceland focused videos at once. I do however try to make them relevant for everyone by sharing tips and tricks but maybe it's not enough :/ anyway, there are only a few episodes left and then I'll make some Faroe Islands episodes again and thereafter... who knows ;)
Hi Mads,
Really good video - just wish you had done this series back in 2017 before I went to Iceland, many of the locations you have shot look so much better than my trip in 2018. Still it's great to see what a good eye and patience can produce. Cheers.... Are you going to Greece in the next few months ????
Another enchanting episode Mads and its interesting to see how the weather influences the dynamics of an image when you see the same composition in different weather periods.
It certainly looked cold when you filmed some of this episode and was wondering if this caused challenges in keeping the condensation off your camera and lenses when moving indoors and outdoors
Thanks, Jim! In regard to the condensation it was a bit of a struggle. When I had finished with this shoot I swiped the canon body and kept it shut off and let it dry up for a couple of days. Just to be sure ;)
That still fase of you in the snow Mads...... i almost felt sorry!!! But not realy!!! When i saw the wether i thought: i would go home and sit behind the fire with a glass of whisky. But then you showed the photo’s, what a great drama in the colourphoto’s of the peninsula. Just Awesome. Was the last photo with the light on the same day?
Thanks a lot. No, the photos with light were all on different dates :)
top video
very nice - tnx for sharing. I do appreciate this may be anathema to landscape photographers but I wonder if the foreground is such a pain in terms of distortion and focus sharpness why not take a step or two back? And then if necessary crop a little bit in post.
It differs so much from scene to scene and photographer to photographer. If you've seen my last episode from Norway I actually do exactly that :)
Mads Peter Iversen congratulations for the excellent work. Your videos are inspiring. I also have a RUclips channel, I'm from Brazil, I always follow in your footsteps.
Thanks a lot, Fran! Good luck with it :)
Very interesting serie and I really like that you focus on not so well known spots. I would prefer a little bit quicker ”feedback loop” in the video. I.e a straight out of camera photo or a screen view when you discuss on location - then the final photo in the end. Some words on how you have edited would also be interesting, but without being the focus of the clip.
I have some editing parts in my old videos :)
Fallegar myndir!
Great video! Shame about the drone permit requirement. Does this mean no more drone shots?
Interesting images - Iceland looks very bleak at the time of year you were there and it shows in your photos
Mads, should I bring my 150-600mm lens to Iceland? Not sure if it would get used much.
I wouldn't bother with such a big lens for landscape photography. For wildlife, yes :)
Amazing!!! Mads are wiping the water drops from your lens glass before the shot or are you cleaning the spots in post?
Great shots and a magical place for sure. Seems to me that parks services don't quite know what to do about drones and default to not allowing them versus taking a measured approach. Clearly in this area, a drone would not disturb wildlife or other people.
I completely agree, Philip... hopefully, it'll get better after this massive backlash against drones.
wait so as of 2021 summer, where are drones outlawed?
I just looked at a map, and shit I drove past this location, because I didn't know. Lack of preparation !
Lol, too bad, you gotta go back then ;)
