Just a tip on taking it off the sidestand. Especially on a heavy bike. Turn your handlebars all the way to the right, then lift. It's crazy good how this makes it soo much easier.

I’m 5’1” and sat on one in the dealership showroom. It fits, but it’s HEAVY until one gets it fully upright. The slick sales lady said I looked good on it and encouraged me to return with my helmet to test ride one. I probably will test ride it even though I won’t buy one. I can surely be an ambassador and advocate for the R18 as I’m a true BMW enthusiast already. Another great review by the lady with the sweetest smile on two wheels!

One of the best explainer video about BMW R18 family of bikes. Love the easy going narration as well as the technical information about the machine. I think BMW should make you the brand ambassador for their R18 family of products !
Lot of respect and love !!!!

I absolutely love this bike, and i've never liked Harley bikes. I agree with reviews, that Harley bikes do a slightly better job at making a cruiser, because their newest models are quite good, and people really enjoy them. But I absolutely love the look of the R18, and it is a work of art. Some American motorcycle reviews have missed the point completely with the R18, not understanding that you're driving artwork. It's not meant to be a performance motorcycle. BWM did an outstanding job, making a beautiful bike.

Over the years, Harley Davidson motorcycles have been endlessly killed by the American press for their form over function, style over substance approach. It happens nearly every time pen is put to paper in regards to a new HD model. So to BMW I would say, join the club, i.e., if you build a motorcycle that is rolling art first, expect to get abused by the American (at least) moto press. And what? Harleys aren't beautiful?

Excellent review! I bought one and enjoy riding it more and more on every trip out. I chose it over the Harley Ultra Limited. The quality of the engine, transmission/clutch and suspension make this a near-perfect machine. I am 191 cm, and my wife is 160 cm, and the suspension automatically adjusts to two up and single riding. The ride feels the same single or fully loaded(probably the most underrated feature). The tech and extras add more value which the Harleys don't have. It's simply fun to ride, and the precision of the torque and cornering make it fun to push around. It's surprisingly nimble for the weight. The boxer adds character differently than the HD v-twin (I've owned four v-twins), creating a smooth centrifugal force to keep the bike upright at any speed, and when you roll on the throttle, it feels great. Pulling away from a stop, the extra weight of the 900cc cylinders and low centre of gravity compared to the R1250RT is a cool rush without going too fast. And it feels less refined in a good way. My only concern is if I buy a Harley vest or jacket and a HOG takes offence and defrocks me.

I own a large 114 CU V-Twin, and I went to a BMW dealer, and sat on the Transcontinental. I am 6'3" with a size 12 shoe. I had no room to move my feet around on the very small floor boards, and with the engine intake right in front of your foot's arch...I had to pass on the thought of owning one. No room for myself to change up my leg and knee position. With the thought of being in the saddle for 500 plus miles per day, that was a 'do not get past'...

    Juliane
I had my 2018 Triumph Rocket III Roadster and it was a Sinister looking motorcycle. The 2300cc engine was mind bending! Mine dyno'd at 180 bhp and 176 ftlb of torque. The new Rocket design does nothing for me. The R18 follows in the Sinister footsteps of my Rocket. It is Raw, mean and very Gothic. It also has the retro style of the early BMWs. Great review Lady! Awesome stuff. Thank you for this!
    Peace.
Ride SAFE and BE safe Lady!

      @martyn_g 9 месяцев назад

Will have to correct you on the term gothic - look at gothic architecture- it is narrow and points upwards- it was designed so you look upwards to “god” - this bike has a very horizontal plane, because it’s so long, therefore, it’s not gothic.

Proud new owner of a late R18 First Edition loaded with cruise. I purchased a BMW Tall Seat. Turning the pre-load a full 12 turns clockwise = a huge difference. Clearance is not a big deal. Peg feeler touches down predictably. Super stable at 80 MPH 6th gear.

Very well presented and explained. I am quite impressed with this fattie. I do like the foot position as opposed to the Harley feet forward setup. The integration of the entertainment and navigation is well done too. The price for B model really does not seem that bad for what you get. I would love to test one....in Portugal for a week.. ;-)

  • @friedpork_owl

Thank you. I agree with the reverse gear I have been embarrassed many times on big bikes but I see no shame in asking for a push. This bike is very impressive when you take the time to look at all the fine details and 49mpg is fire. And the exposed drive shaft is such a beautiful thing to look at. I look forward to riding this bike, hopefully one day in Germany. (I like to experience things in their natural habitat) Cheers!

Thanks for another great video. I am also more interested on the naked R18s including the classic. The only concern I have is the low clearance, but I am not sure ( I did not see a review on you trip in Portugal). Did you have the chance to ride on the classic? If so, is there a riding difference from the regular r18?
    Thanks in advance!

After reading the notes. BMW motorcycle owners (some not all) kill me. Back in 2010 I was selling my K1200gt bike with about 20k miles on it. ( I lived in Newton, MA -> so that might have been the problem). Time after time…I had BMW people go over it and asked the most ridiculous questions and the most condescending statements. “How did this scratch show up on the fairing?”. Me: “I don’t know…I think it was on there when I bought it.” “Can I take it for a ride?”. Me: “only where I can see you”. “Have you dropped the bike yet?”. The offers ranged between $700 -> $3k dollars. I donated it to a charity and bought a Honda Valkyrie which I sold to buy my ‘17 Victory Vision. I definitely like the transcontinental! Looks great!

A very good video presentation and a great review. As to the R18 I feel it's fair to say that BMW knows how to build world class motorcycles. This line-up, while not perfect, checks off pretty much all the boxes and it is BMW's best effort yet. I hope it generates floor traffic and sales for this marque. And even if it's only the BMW loyal owners who embrace it enough to buy it, perhaps it will generate enough interest for riders of other brands to trade up to something new. This could be a win-win for all of the motorcycle world. In these uncertain times I for one can't think of a better way to be socially distant then to get out and ride.
    Thanks again for your presentation.~GenearlT

After three demo rides on this bike I cannot get myself to buy it even with the crazy good offers on them. Foot position with relationship to the shifter and the brake. Even in Roll mode its course under throttle. Harley and Indian so much more satisfying to ride than this one.....A shame cause I really wanted to like it but I cant.

There is a trick to getting a heavy bike off the side stand, turn the wheel in the direction to the right.
How did they manage to take a 243lb pound engine and transmission and find over 625lbs to add in making the B model? did they use solid down tubes? There is no excuse for this bike being so heavy, fifty pounds more than an equivalent Street Glide or Chieftain. It is almost as heavy as the full dress Road Master.
With no Apple Carplay or Android Auto that screen goes to waste and the BMW app is atrocious and buggy
