    Say what you want about Bret Hart, but he had beautiful matches with Shawn Michaels in 92 and of course in 96-97. WM #13 vs Stone Cold, enough said. Top 5 match of all time. Then had classic wars with Undertaker. Ohhh,he beat Flair in 92, even though Ric was 7 years out of prime, it was a classic match. Ohhh, at WM #8, he had enough respect from Piper and won another classic match. Wait, he had a 2 year run with Curt Henning from 89 to 91with some of the most creative matches ever. Wimbledon stadium at Summer Slam vs the Bulldog. Put it this way, if you think Hart is overrated and a chump, then I guess you really dont think much about wrestling or his competitors. Some of the all time greats Bret painted amazing matches and stories with. Piper,Henning,Michael's, Stone Cold and Undertaker are all apart of the Bret Hart career and story, and all those competitors are top 15 EPIC wrestler's other than Davey Boy Smith.

      Bret hart and curt henning did not have a 2 year run from 92 to 94 it was more like 89 then 91 at summer slam curt didn’t wrestle much that year he was hurt. 92 was his year with heenan and flair as a liazon curt also wrestled Bret at the 93 king of the ring but that was it. Also Austin Bret was at wrestlemania 13 not 14

      i agree that bruce is full of shit but disagree about shawn.
      bruce quite evidently disliked hbk's antics back then.
      i think bret was also not accepting of the fact that his time as the guy was nearing an end. bret seemed to think in 96/97 he was still going to remain the top guy into the new millenium, and literally no body else in the business agreed.
      bret also seemed to think that hbk being douche meant he should be pushed instead, again not getting that there was a new top guy on the scene. bret was the only one who thought bret should remain the face of the company. EVERYONE else knew it was Austin, HBK, HHH and Rock's time on the horizon except Bret.
      I'm a massive Bret fan but Im tired of people using Michael's unpro behaviour as a reason why Bret was right. Bret was wrong. HBK was also wrong.
      but Bret's feelings at that. time seem deluded to me. its almost as though bret invented his own stories in his mind and then compared the stuff he was given to the stuff he thought up unfavorably. it was bret who was unreasonable in this situation as far as actual business.

    • @estefanguerrero6994
      @estefanguerrero6994 3 года назад +13

      daniel johnston sorry but I disagree with everything you said. Bruce always praises Shawn and never once talks about his antics aside from he was difficult at times. He really digs in on Bret tho every chance he gets. It’s probably cuz of his current close relationship with HHH and Vince. Bret has agreed many times that It was Shawns time but says that he was ignored as the champion in the booking of 96 which was completely accurate. They treated him as an afterthought before he even passed the torch. They even had the diesel undertaker feud built around the fact that they both had Bret beat until either diesel or taker would interfere. And this was all right before mania 12. Bret was a massive supporter of Austin and the Rock and help establish their careers. Bret wanted to drop the belt to Austin. He also refused to beat the newly crowned ic champ, the rock, on raw after HHH & hbk suggested it as a way to bury the rock. Bret wanted them to succeed. HHHs time on top wouldn’t come for another couple years because when Bret was there HHH basically carried HBKs bags. If anything... Shawn was the one that wanted to remain on top and even threatened to not drop the belt to Austin at WM14.

    I can't help but smirk while noticing just how much respect and deservingly so Jim Ross has for Bret Hart which always had shown while he did color commentating. Being one who grew up watching every moment of everything they covered in this interview, it's wonderful to know that this still holds to this day. Bret gave us the best matches when it came to the storytelling, the psychology and the realism implicated and that's why those of us who are more into the "steak" as opposed to the "sizzle", Bret is legendary and I personally prefer his style because it's more believable. Many will tell you today that Shawn is the greatest performer and that is true as he gave us the most thrilling and theatrical performances with the type of charismatic showmanship only he could display but also because he was very instrumental to the transition into the "sizzle" dimension of pro-wrestling. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels are so similar yet so different. It's Ryu Vs Ken in Super Street Fighter.

    Bret took wrestling very seriously, but that's what made him great. What Bret did for Shawn at WM12 launched him to the top. As JR points out, Bret could have lost his cool at the end of the match and made Shawn look bad. Great podcast, JR is always professional and thoughtful with his responses with honesty always at the forefront of them all. The way they built the WM12 match was so obvious HBK was going over and making the champion looking weak prior I believe really hindered Shawns credibility as a champion. Piss poor booking really as it could have been so much more than what it was. The end of '96 really set the tone for arguably the greatest year of pro wrestling in '97. Bret vs SCSA was just a fantastic match that I watched back recently and still holds up now. A fantastic return that also solidified the SCSA character and set him on his way to becoming the biggest superstar ever. Hearing all the negotiations and how Bret manoeuvred a great contract for himself I always felt worked against him looking back as it has always come across as Vince was extremely hurt that he even considered leaving the WWF. I always knew Bret looked at him as a father figure but I have thought Vince reciprocated the same and felt betrayed from that and held a grudge against him for it (but that is only my opinion). Bret Hart always brought authenticity and realism to wrestling and made it more than just a match, he made it an art that unfortunately seems gone from today's product. Looking forward to '97 and thanks for a great upload guys

      @@blueblur2329 I don't disagree that Austin was obviously the driving Force but I'M Bret have Austin credibility. He showed he could perform at a higher level, and consistently, not just one match.. I also think Vince's Mr Mcmahon needs a LOT of credit, Austin only works if he has a great person to bounce off. Every champagne needs an opponent. Very face needs a heel. Every SOB needs a boss to antagonise. We've seen before what happens when the wwe doesn't have a viable opponent, a credible heel to build a story around, it affects the perdormer (In this case Austin ) and the company as a whole massively. It happened with Austin later on in fact.
      I'm the biggest Austin fan there is, Hart too, definitely for longer with Hart. Together tho, they were unbelievable. Both their best work came with ech other Imo. A great pairing .
      Peace.

    • @blueblur2329
      @blueblur2329 3 года назад

      @@fuzzydunlop_1 Would Austin have not been able to show that he could perform at a high level consistently without Bret though? He did win King of the Ring for a reason. I agree their match at WM13 was probably their best match but I wouldn't go as far to say it made him. More like helped make him bigger. That era was a time where fans valued great characters and stories over actual matches. Just look at Sting. Sting was at his most over when he wasn't wrestling and was instead just coming down the rafters. The same with Austin. Austin got more over after he broke his neck and couldn't wrestle for several months than he did wrestling anyone in the company.
      As for Mcmahon, again I think you're placing too much emphasis on him as well. That rivalry didn't start until mid 98. By the end of 97 Austin was already massively over and with the exception of Sting was the most over wrestler in the world at that point. So I wouldn't say Austin wouldn't have worked without that Mcmahon rivalry either. The reason for Austin's popularity is because he was the best talker in the company, his promo's were better than everyone else and he had the most charisma in and out of the ring at that time. Where I will give Vince credit is behind the scenes in that he put Austin in the best position to succeed through storylines or highlighting the strength of Austin's character.

    I find it interesting that Bret Hart would play with the idea of going to WCW in 1992. I wonder what time of year that was? Was it after he lost the Intercontinental title to the Mountie because of the flu (storyline) in January and they put the belt on Roddy Piper? Surely he must have known that he would get a huge match with Piper at Wrestlemania 8 and not want to leave at that point. It was probably more likely that he wanted to leave after losing the IC belt to British Bulldog at Summerslam, but before he would find out he would beat Ric Flair for the WWF title in mid-October. Early advertisements for Survivor Series 1992 in WWF magazine showed Ric Flair still having the WWF title in his tag team match and British Bulldog defending the IC belt against Mountie. Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels was originally just going to be a regular match with no titles. Bret in September / early October must have thought the WWF had nothing left for him and I'm guessing that is when he wanted to leave for WCW.

    • @mrkipling2201

      It was late 1992 when Bulldog and Warrior were released from the WWF because of Vince finding out that they were getting HGH from a doctor in Europe. I thought that the "surprise" overtime in the Ironman match was a great addition, from an invested fan position.
    I was a complete mark for Hart at the time and had so many arguments with HBK fans at school about the finish and who was better. They had the legit argument that HBK pinned and beat Bret to win and we felt legitimized that Bret had the match won before the original timer ran out. It kept us all completely invested and wanting more to come from the rivalry.

    1996 was the first time I laid eyes on Bret. I was a child looking to escape a crap life and reality and diving into WWF was my escape. I lived in that world. The first time I saw Bret…his crooked smile and deep eyes I was as in love as a child could be. I *hated* Shawn and was terrified of Austin when he came in. I grew to really enjoy and respect Austin but that’s not the case with Shawn to this day.
    Bret has endured so much loss and suffering. Yesterday was the anniversary of Owen’s death. I hope he’s happy in his life with his wife and continues to be for a long time to come.
    But Bret…I still carry a torch for you. 😂

    It's funny, growing up I could never choose who I liked better, Bret or Shawn. The truth is, even knowing all of the backstage politics and their problematic personalities, I still can't decide whose work I enjoy more. I feel for Bret, because of what he endured, but his own concern for his legacy, which was never ever in question, turned him into a very bitter person. I wished so hard that he would have gone to WCW and been the main focus of the program, but it was clear Hogan was never going to let that happen, and you could tell that just ate at Bret. Sadly, once he made it to the top, Goldberg's boot cut his run short. Shawn on the other hand did seem to turn his life around. I know a lot of people don't feel like he was genuine in his newfound faith, but his life definitely seems like it has been blessed since making a change in his life. More than anything, I hope both men are happy today. They've definitely earned the title of legend, if we're really looking at things as objectively as possible.

He was visibly upset about it and as a fan I "believed" at the time that bret was done with the match and he thought he got the win. Bret went back into the ring and started working on Shawn Michaels for a another sharpshooter. But Shawn hit two super kicks and thats that. I thought the ending made room for a rematch in the future.

    Meltzer makes shit up at times but the part where Bret was promised a title win over Shawn, JR says its not like Vince. My argument to that would be its also not like Vince to give ANYONE creative control in writing on any contract before Bret did it. Maybe Hogan but I don't it because it wasn't needed, maybe a newer contract around 1990 or something. Also it wasn't like Vince to sign a man for 20 years, Bret had him over a barrel in the regard that if he left around 1996 it might have killed his company, so in that regard I don't think its unreasonable to think Vince would agree to it, especially if Bret is offering to lose it back down the road. All that said, I don't think Bret demanded to be champion, he usually just wanted a good story line.

And he was taking time off after. Like what are you expecting?

    i think vince took out all his frustrations of losing other guys to wcw on bret... if there were no competition bret would have been wwf for life no question. the competition brought out a dark and paranoid state of mind from vince. bret was so obsessed with how his legacy would be that ironically he ended up being remembered for a lot of things that he shouldn't have. it was just such a shame. we missed out on so many great matches and moments. bret was truly a wwf lifer and did not belong in wcw at all. of all the people to have had this happen to, you would have never thought it'd be bret. just 3 years prior he was sitting on the shoulders of all the wrestlers in msg as teh new champion...
