  • Chris, along with UT/TSU extension agent Joellen Dimond, shed some light on the appearance of unsightly brown spots on the leaves of a Bartlett residents' crabapple tree. A big culprit for these kind of spots is cedar-apple rust which is caused by a spores that grow on cedar trees and are transferred to the crabapple tree via the wind, rain or leaf contamination. The cedar-apple rust fungus spends part of its life cycle on the cedar tree and part on an apple tree. While this condition does not go away by itself it isn't deadly to the tree. You can minimize the appearance of cedar-apple rust by practicing good sanitation and by using fungicide.

I have a crabapple tree with yellow fruit. Some of the fruit has purplish spots. And some have a purplish sheen on them. Are they ok to make jelly?

@Geoge Withers The best thing to do would be to use a home orchard spray. Follow the directions on the label. Here is a Family Plot segment about summer fruit tree care. www.familyplotgarden.com/orchard-care.html

The cedar-apple rust can get on the fruit and even if the fruit does not die, it will be of lower quality. If you use a home orchard spray according to label directions and on a spray schedule it will help protect the tree against future infections.
