This was a big earthquake, it measured 7.3. The nearest city was Ishinomaki, but Kamaishi was also affected. Ishinomaki was the town that had the most fatalities from the earthquake in 2011, being nearly 4,000 killed. The 2012 earthquake killed 2 people, plus a man who attempted to sail from the tsunami in Kuji. Multiple aftershocks occurred, and tides in waters across the Pacific rose. Unusual waves were spotted in California.
It's a pretty awesome system they have here. There was just a magnitude 5 quake a few minute ago. My phone started ringing, and the alert had the time until the earthquake arrived and the intensity. The way it works is that they have seismic monitoring stations set up everywhere. The fastest earthquake waves travel at 9000 mph, so there's time to quickly relay the information to you.
Their warning system is so advanced! An earthquake is detected, people are warned, then a mere two minutes later, a tsunami warning, broadcasted in FIVE LANGUAGES. Mad respect... even in disaster, they can get such information out.

Japan is the most technologically prepared country for getting quake info out fast. They take advantage of the speed difference between the P-waves (faster but not much shaking) and the S-waves (slower but much more violent).
Kudos for this brave woman and others who stayed calm just to do their job. She could have hid or escaped to safety but she stayed. You can sense that she is scared but she is firm. Salute!
Most people will speak a smattering of English. It doesn't have to be perfect. Plus the severe shaking would be enough to prompt anyone to stay the fuck off the shoreline. :P The videos you see of people standing around while the tsunami roars around them are people who knows that the building they're on will hold. Here in California they're supposed to build something similar to this system and people were complaining about it like crazy. Obviously the people close to the epice epicenter of the quake won't benefit much from it, but if it can warn those farther out about those incoming S waves, then I think it would save lives. Look how much time they had in some places to get to safety before the quake hit in some places. All states within the range of the San Andreas fault line should have a system like this. No?
I'm working on a documentary about the next big one in California and what an early warning system might do to help. Nobody wants to pay for the system but it would surely save lives, or at the very least, provide some psychological reassurance to many people who would know what to anticipate.

It looks so eerie when it shows a live feed, you don't know what to look for but you know that something is wrong. Plus the quality and the low FPS of the first camera just adds to the eeriness. Not sure if anybody else feels that way though.
I've lived in Japan and experienced both systems. Believe me, there are other ways Japan's EAS can scare or annoy you. You ever been woken up at 3am by a loud announcement of a relatively small earthquake occurring 1,000 miles away? I have.
The red stripes represent a stronger tsunami warning than the yellow ones, but not the strongest possible tsunami warning, which is indicated by red and white stripes.
Everyone: The sounds that went off when the people were on the show was only an early warning. It only sounds like "ding dong!" because it's just an advisory. However, the actual warning doesn't sound so "kawaii! (^-^)" at 3:41. It sounds like a phone ringing but more loud and more continuous. It's really fascinating how it displays the warning in several languages. Well done, Japan.

I never knew that hosts on NHK are required to stop and read the emergency message, regardless of whatever is being broadcast, plus they have to remain stationary in front of the camera, even when they should be in cover, which is very brave by the way
Here in the US, the news anchors stop and say "Woah..what's shaking?" before taking cover under the desk. In Japan, they calmly continue on reading off the predicted affected areas.

This was a big earthquake, it measured 7.3. The nearest city was Ishinomaki, but Kamaishi was also affected. Ishinomaki was the town that had the most fatalities from the earthquake in 2011, being nearly 4,000 killed. The 2012 earthquake killed 2 people, plus a man who attempted to sail from the tsunami in Kuji. Multiple aftershocks occurred, and tides in waters across the Pacific rose. Unusual waves were spotted in California.

It's a pretty awesome system they have here. There was just a magnitude 5 quake a few minute ago. My phone started ringing, and the alert had the time until the earthquake arrived and the intensity.
The way it works is that they have seismic monitoring stations set up everywhere. The fastest earthquake waves travel at 9000 mph, so there's time to quickly relay the information to you.

Its really fascinating how she takes her time to warn the people and not just evacuate, you can see the fear in her face, she is really shocked but still trying to calmly warn everyone to be safe.

Japan is the most technologically prepared country for getting quake info out fast. They take advantage of the speed difference between the P-waves (faster but not much shaking) and the S-waves (slower but much more violent).

Here in California they're supposed to build something similar to this system and people were complaining about it like crazy. Obviously the people close to the epice epicenter of the quake won't benefit much from it, but if it can warn those farther out about those incoming S waves, then I think it would save lives. Look how much time they had in some places to get to safety before the quake hit in some places. All states within the range of the San Andreas fault line should have a system like this. No?
I'm working on a documentary about the next big one in California and what an early warning system might do to help. Nobody wants to pay for the system but it would surely save lives, or at the very least, provide some psychological reassurance to many people who would know what to anticipate.
