It is a lot of work, but the end result is going to be amazing. I am envious of you two. Will love to do all that work even if I am over 70 year's. Life is getting bored to sit and do nothing and waiting for my life to be over. If there is something to do like you two toke on to do, then it would have been worth it. You can still carry on in the garden after the house is done. You are blessed. 🙏🙏
Hi Mairead and Dan, would you maybe use some of the leftover stone on the outdoor area ? It would blend in and when you have your furniture and plants on it would look amazing, very natural. ❤
How about some Portuguese limestone on the floor. It goes so well with stone and cheaper than you think. If you go to Neves & Neves in Poiares opposite the garden centre they are so helpful.
This probably seems like a random comment, but here goes. I applaud you both for wearing strong boots 🥾 around your property, especially during the building restoration. Safety first. 🎉
I love the tiles, because l choose them in my house years ago but in my new house we did polished cement with pretty gravel mix with cement and after polished like marble, it is cheeper for us and so easy to keep clean. Only one pouring of cement, and just polished. I dont know if they do this in spain, but in Australia it is very fashionable due to our hot climat. And l could not believed how beautiful it look ones it is finish, the colours are different depend of the colour of gravel . You can also make tests with different colour. Love your garden ❤❤❤❤
Tiles if the tiles have a rough/matt finish inside or out dirt sticks to it. So look for tiles with a slight sheen. Makes it easier to dry mop with a swiffer. Porcelain not terracotta as they chip easier if you drop a heavy object on them. Happy Hunting
@@NearbyVeggies I am wondering if you are aware of the youtubers called "the newbys" - a young family from the Ukraine who are also building a home in Portugal. They have sourced really great local tile Terra cotta tile which they have installed in simple but gorgeous patterns. I thought of them when you were talking about your search for local tile. They might be worthwhile checking out. Like you, they are really into gardening and producing food - they have built lovely stone pathways etc... Best wishes from Calgary Canada! Bonnie.
Make sure you have photos of the walls and area with you when you go, ask opinion of the trader about colour, endurance and price economy. They deal with tiles all day and may make good recommendations. Visit a few tiled buildings and take photos of those tiles you like.
Can I make a suggestion on the tiles. I did my outdoor areas and kitchen with gres tiles . They are extremely hard wearing and after 25 years of being layed not one chip , crack or discoloration.
Flooring might be something like they did in "Make.Do.Grow" RUclips channel. They're large stone slabs that are more work for the people who have to lay the floor. The slabs are cut in Portugal. They have videos about the way the stone is cut, etc. As for colour, a light grey-green or grey-blue would offset the colours in the walls. Just a couple of things to consider. The terracotta tiles would make a nice facing on something like a fire pit, planter, something small. Same with those ceramic tiles. I have no idea how much they paid for the stone slabs, but they do look good as a flooring. May be prohibitive in cost. 🤷
I agree with you. I don’t particularly like either of those tiles. Surely there must be a terracotta tile that is terracotta all the way through. I live in Australia and I have a terracotta tile that is terracotta all the way through. They are 300mm x 300mm and I am sure they came from Spain. They are fantastic because even if they gets little chip it doesn’t show. I love them and everything seems to go with them.
Hello from Switzerland where we are rebuilding an old farmhouse. Well for your stairs I would not use any tiles… I would use what is available on place, you have such a beautiful stones, why not use them? Or just rough concrete so it gives a more natural look. Thank you for everything you are sharing, we could not imagine to do any video work while working on our house and garden.
Have you thought about the alternative of having Béton ciré (waxed concrete) floors? When properly done they are very beautiful, durable and easy to maintain. You can choose the colour you want the concrete to be dyed with. And they pull together several rooms, outdoors and indoors.
Hi Dan and Mariad your home is coming along and looking so beautiful, such amazing craftsman you have that have transformed your amazing home. Your garden is also such a delight to wander through. Thank you both for sharing.
Like you, we are also renovating a xisto house in central Portugal. We have laid tiles inside. They are Portuguese and made of porcelain with a thin layer of natural stone on top. They are black/dark grey natural stone with mid-grey in it. It gives a nice calm contrast with xisto walls and white walls. We don't know if the layer of natural stone is fake or real. It feels like real stone under our bare feet. We are going to use black/grey thin xisto stone outside on the patio and veranda to tile with. That will give a nice contrast to the colour of the xisto stone of the outer walls of the house. Thanks for your lovely videos. It helped at difficult times to persevere. Questions about shops etc . Please let us know. Good luck.
I am so in love with your impressive gladioli. I would also have looked further for other larger tiles. Can't wait to see the rafters for the roof going up. So close now!
A lovely video, as usual. A great combination of house, garden, electrical repairs, cookery, and music. What more could one need on a rainy English Saturday! For the tiles, i would suggest picking out one of the paler colours in the walls and trying that. Thank you so much for sharing. NB Can I have the recipe for the cauliflower dish!
Love you both, a great, hard working couple, so calm, collected, passionate and just adorable. Look forward to your videos Respect and love from South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤
So beautifully coming along. Love the floors and the windows. Still not convinced by the tiles I prefer the Roman ones but it might not be the region style. ❤❤❤
Take a look at Aleluia Ceramicas in Aveiro or RECER in Oliveira do Bairro both in Aveiro district wich is the capital of ceramics in Portugal some of the best ceramics made in Portugal pretty sure you will find out what you are looking for...
Go to the Lime Quarry, someone showed it a while ago when they were building I cannot even remember who it was I watch so many Portuguese channels, but it was wonderful to see.
It looks great. About tiles, there are great tiles that have an almost woodlike look. Maybe that’s an idea for the whole house (easier to maintain and clean 😆)
A nice clay tile looks more authentic. Also, if it ever chips, you won't see a different color like you do with porcelain tile. Buy a box extra, whatever you do, so you'll have color-matching replacements 20 years from now. Stone work looks great
I agree that selecting a tile can be difficult! I bought s home in Florida, USA and the Tera Cotta tills were made in Mexico and were glazed! They were beautiful. What made them interesting was the fact they were placed outside with no protection from the animals living in the area. Some tiles had chicken foot prints and others sowed where dogs had walked across them during the drying process. Other unrecognizable prints were also included. Sounds horrible huh? Not at all! They were such a convo piece! I loved them and was so sorry that a hurricane caused me to leave the area. Bottom line, I would recommend a tile with a glaze.
I used a stone from Solnhofen. It's a very creamy colour, with all dimensions and the surface can be polished (you see that in old churches) or also with some or more grip. Exits also as fake tiles, which are much more affordable.
I would agree with one comment re getting flagstones or slabs for veranda. They will stay cool in heat of summer..flat enough for furniture to sit comfortably on ..and comfortable to walk on in bare feet. Neutral colour also all ye will need to consider is size of slabs ye would like . Plus they will be cost effective and yer planted pots will look great..terrocota or colour glazed. Home for the pots ye transported from UK. The house is looking wonderful. Those men are amazingly talented. Great to see younger guys with them learning those important trades. Keep doin what yer doing. Irish viewer enjoying yer journey.😊
In my experience finding the right tile is always very hard with issues of limitless patterns, color and size options plus the limited ability to visualize what the whole installation will look like. Good luck and best wishes.
Hi Veggies, You definitely want Porcelain on the floors, but there's two types of porcelain tiles, cheap Porcelain and good Porcelain, the good Porcelain basically has the same color going through it, and the cheap Porcelain has two colors top layer and bottom layers are different colors. You want the Porcelain with solid coloring going through it, just in case in the future you drop something heavy on it and you won't be able to see the damage if it accidentally chips and much easier to fix it. Porcelain is like stone once its installed it will never break.
Uauu is so nice to see your project coming along after so much wait. The stone work on the walls look amazing, congratulations. We are also on the process of getting ours ready, all the paper work and unification of the plots to be able to build on a rustic area is coming together. Anyways, the reason why i am writing is to give an idea about the flooring. What about polished cement? That is a very resistant material and will blend well with the stone pattern, you can choose a warm tint to the cement mixer and have it matching with the stone color you guys have. Just an idea....Congratulations with your cauliflower , but indeed looked a bit spicy, have a wonderful Sunday.
from NZ...you two are divine....inspirational. i'm an olde organic gardener n both your garden n build are a joy. have you thought of a wooden floor for the deck, ie planks? wood would fit so nicely with the stone...n i know that Aussie decks have to withstand the extremes....n wood's so much nicer to walk on barefeet than pavers or tiles XXXXX

Thanx again for a great up-date video. Totally understand your tile dilemma. What about local stone - maybe in black or nearly black??? Had to laugh at "I'm going need some water" 🔥. Have a great weekend....❤
Try stained, sealed concrete. We did a couple of rooms in our home and they turned out beautiful. They looked like leather. Of course you can choose your own color and style.
Gosh … I hope you get some decent results with the sesame seeds, chick peas and peanut crops. I would be interested to see your tomatoes crops if you have any. Regarding your tiles, here are my thoughts. I liked the idea of narrow rectangular tiles - not in a herringbone pattern, rather a “stack bond “pattern so it would be less “busy”. The downside I saw with the terracotta tiles were the wear-n-tear and maintenance. Personally, I would choose a light coloured tile - say cream - that has a sand grit texture (non slip) and would lay them in the stack bond pattern.
Love your skills and knowledge about Nature mainly your wonderfull veggies. The house Will be great and beatifUl keeping his original look. About tiles in my opinion there are the square. rhustic Portuguese tiles made of “barro” like the roof tiles with clearence betwin them about one cm grounding with the same rhustic Walla morter. They Will look fantastic. Congrats grat job.
Instead of tiles, what about (given your sailing past) teak decking. The real deal (teak) or one of the alternatives like Flexiteek. Good luck with the amazing project.
Speaking as someone who returned home from a weekend away (20+ years ago) and terracotta tiles had been placed on my kitchen floor as a surprise for me ....I never liked them ..... too much hassle and expense to change them 😢. Would you consider something lighter in colour, perhaps something along the sandy colour of the exterior? As you're well aware it's not always going to be sunny and you'll need some brightness indoors. Best of luck whatever you choose. 💚
You guys are the ones who are going to live there, so maybe just follow your instinct with the tiles, sorry to see the first ones to go they were beautiful... but again i'm not the one living there. enjoy the process.
On the tiles, I would ask this... What was it you loved about the other tiles? The color? The size? The feel? Those are the things I would look for in the new tiles. I personally liked both the choices you presented today, and the weathered look of the second tile was particularly charming to me, because it seemed like it might have weathered along with the house. You can change the orientation of the tiles, so they don't all look exactly the same, if that makes a difference. But on camera and in person looks will be different, and in the end you know what you want, so I hope you can find it soon and with little effort. As far as the plug is concerned, yes, I have done something similar and I also exclaimed, "no, no, no, no!" when I discovered my error. 😂
Tile thought; I'm of the mind that the stone walls and wooden beams bring all of the "Rustico" your project needs. This is why I don't care for the two samples you offered. To me they look like modern tiles made to appear rustic. So there is that (to much rustic) and they clearly are not 'authentic'. I'm going to suggest giving the eye a break and go for a simple, modern machine made red (deep hue) terracotta tile. The size is debatable, but I'm inclined to think large to jumbo tiles with thin grout lines. So the installed visual 'feel' would be monolithic. I'm carrying over the design palette of the courtyard garden white rendered wall. Think 1) natural hand laid dry stack stone 2) hewn wooden beams are the dominant visual language (no patterns/colors repeat) and the complimentary 3) smooth white rendered wall on the vertical axis and 4) smooth deep red natural terracotta clay on the horizontal plane. I'll offer a counterpoint to wood flooring on the interior. In summary - not authentic to this place. I'll suggest your terracotta selection should carry through the entire building. I'm imagining the delight of cool to the touch terracotta as you walk across the tiles during the hot months. I would delight in the natural materials giving up that pleasure. That's my input. :) I hope something is useful
I’m a bit confused, is the front of the house facing your garden? Would like to see a long view of the other side of the house, the back? Also, there seems to be another building to the right of the house. A long view of, the entrance to the house would be nice.
Handmade traditional Portuguese terracota tiles: lookup Cerâmica Tejo in Mouriscas, I used to work there last year and he makes handmade traditional tiles and he has large square ones like those “fake” examples you have. They are really beautiful and would like amazing with your stone walls xx
Hello there! Regarding the balcony floor, how about concrete floor finish types? I love wooden floors, the first time I had the opportunity to put a floor in my house and every room has the same wood. Best thing I did.
It is a lot of work, but the end result is going to be amazing. I am envious of you two. Will love to do all that work even if I am over 70 year's. Instead of tiles, what about (given your sailing past) teak decking. The real deal (teak) or one of the alternatives like Flexiteek. Good luck with the amazing project.
Thank you
Check out what the Newbys did with local tiles. Very pretty and traditional

💚
Thank you
You guys are the ones who are going to live there, so maybe just follow your instinct with the tiles, sorry to see the first ones to go they were beautiful... but again i'm not the one living there. enjoy the process.
Thank you
On the tiles, I would ask this... 😂
Thank you
Just an idea, what about stamped concrete to look like wood panels you can even colour the concrete. Don’t know how cost effective it would be x x x
Thank you
Tile thought; I'm of the mind that the stone walls and wooden beams bring all of the "Rustico" your project needs.
I hope something is useful
Thank you
I’m a bit confused, is the front of the house facing your garden? Would like to see a long view of the other side of the house, the back? Also, there seems to be another building to the right of the house. A long view of, the entrance to the house would be nice.
I would pick a large format tile, in lightest colour you have in walls.
Thank you
Handmade traditional Portuguese terracota tiles: lookup Cerâmica Tejo in Mouriscas, I used to work there last year and he makes handmade traditional tiles and he has large square ones like those “fake” examples you have. They are really beautiful and would like amazing with your stone walls xx
Thank you
Obrigada
Please, post the recipe of that sauce. It looks so tasty.
I'll put it in the description when I get some time. Thank you
Wow, hi guys ❤
Hello there! Regarding the balcony floor, how about concrete floor finish types? I love wooden floors, the first time I had the opportunity to put a floor in my house and every room has the same wood. Best thing I did.
Thank you
