Liked Infinity speakers back in the 80's. Was more of a Emit tweeter guy. The polycell tweeters didn't do it for me. Even had Kappa series speakers with Emits in my 86 Mustang. The ribbon tweets sounded super crispy and clean. Very bright and forward sounding. Ended up moving into ADS speakers for more smoothness and clarity.

I would be checking out the crossovers for electrolytic capacitors and testing them to see if they are still in spec. I'd also be looking at the hi and mid freq pots, giving them a squirt of lube-fader or at least giving them a twist back and forth to get rid of any oxidation.

Love this video! My first set of speakers were Infinity SM-115s that I bought at The Good Guys (remember them?) in 1995. Paired them with a Denon AVR from the same vintage and they rocked my dorm room and several apartments after that. I still have them and they are currently my garage speakers driven by a 70s Kenwood KR-2600 receiver that puts out like 15 watts of power. That’s all the Infinitys need. Those 15 watts will drive them loud enough for the entire neighborhood to hear. I think they sound great, and they can thump but the bass is sloppy. I will never get rid of them until the foam disintegrates. And even then I might re-foam them.

Back in the day, when I was going off to school, my dad sent me off with a Harmon Kardon receiver and a pair of Panasonic thrusters. It was great for my room size. Later I swapped the Panasonics for a pair of Pioneer three way boxes. From there I moved to the Sound Dynamics 10S, which for the late 80s was really a great sound. My big move in the early 90s was to the Definitive Technology BP10 B, which is IMO one of the best tower designs ever made. My son still runs them in his home and won’t give them up.

I have a pair of Infinity Column II's, bought new in 1977. The midrange driver is in its own internal enclosure. There are 2 piezo tweeters, one forward firing, one backward firing. The two 12" woofers, one firing forward, one down, seem powerful enough to lift these heavy tower speakers off of the ground. They are very efficient, fused, and rated for 15 to 250 watts of power. I chose these over a pair of JBL centuries, which were about the same price at the time, after several hours of listening tests - no regrets.

I saw the thumbnail and immediately thought they looked like my old SM-120s from High-School and college days. I actually had THREE of the SM-120s and used one for a "center Channel" running mixed-mono mode from an older Kenwood Receiver. I vaguely remember using both positive speaker outputs for the center. The cabinets were destroyed in a flood, so I rebuilt some cabinets out of Ply-Wood and they became my outdoor party speakers. I use Infinity Beta 50s in my Home theater now.

I have the RS6000 Infinity's I bought for $100. They were originally released in 1988 for $850 (today that's around $2400). I expected to just turn them around and sell them, but now they are my everyday speaker. Infinity nailed it IMHO, for my listening preference. Yes, a bit heavy on the bass, but I like that and with the ribbon tweeter, I can get a full range. I have Klipsch KG4's, I have Paradigm Studio 100's v3, I have Infinity Alpha 40's and several bookshelf speakers, but these Infinity's are awesome. Paired with my Arcam 250 and Technics MK1200 with a Vincent 700 Phono Amp, I couldn't be more happier with what I paid for. Also have the WiiM Ultra into a SMSL DL200 for streaming. Loud and clean. Metal, Classic, Country, Classical all sound good....Of course I could do better, but as a budget setup over my high end, it is my preference at home. Do more reviews on the older stuff, welcome to come to my home too :)

Still have my Infinity SM 152's with the 15" woofers. Also owned the 12" SM 125's and the bookshelf SM's, but sold when I moved out to California from Milwaukee. Still use the Infinity SM 152's in another media room and they still rock 30 years after purchasing them. Had to replace the woofer surrounds on both speakers and a couple of mid-range speakers from kids throwing balls through them, but everything still kicks and I still love the Polycell tweeters. Not as good as the old EMIT tweeters but still great for rock and metal. Infinity used to make really good speakers, home and automotive, and I love their sound signature. Upgraded my SM's in the mid to late 2000's to Infinity Beta fronts, center, and 4 surrounds with a second pair of front Infinity Classica's and 20 years later they're still magnificent. It's really too bad that Infinity got bought out and their high end speakers were discontinued. They had great speakers and sound!

VERY efficient and loud with no distortion and I’ve had them at ear bleeding levels in the past. I had a pair of Infinity Quantum 2 speakers I bought when they came out in the late 70s. GREAT speakers. They each had a 12" Infinity Dual-Drive Woofer, a 4" mid-bass coupler, 2 1.5" dome midranges, and 3 EMIT tweeters. Frequency response from 24 HZ - 32 kHZ +- 3 DB, 4 Ohms. 49" tall. I had them for about 25 years, until the woofer surrounds fell apart. Drove them with a pair of GAS Son of Ampzilla amps (bi-amped). Bought the speakers and amps thru the US Army audio-photo store in Germany when I was stationed there, so I saved about 30% over normal retail. That was my dream system, but nothing lasts forever. The amps eventually died as well. Oh well... Infinity made some amazing speakers. I had a question about hooking up the GAS amps to the speakers, so I wrote to Infinity, and Arne Nudell answered personally! Blew me away...

Bought a pair of SM 112's in '93 as part of my first stereo, along with a Yamaha receiver, CD player, and dual cassette deck. $1200 in '93 = about $2600 today. Still have all the pieces; all but the cassette deck still work and get regular use. Although I have collected a modest, but very nice group of vintage gear in good shape, I could easily live with that original system no problem. It still sounds good and it got me off to a great start in the hobby.
The only thing I have done to any of the pieces is to replace the bulb in the display on the receiver after a couple of years, a 10 minute job. That's it. Haven't even had to refoam the speakers yet.
These days the gear consists of a McIntosh MA 5100, Marantz 2285b w/ WC22, Sansui 8080DB, Yamaha CR-1020, Onkyo A7, and a couple of T9's, Pioneer SA 9100, Technics SL 1600, series 1 Klipsch Cornwalls, among others. As good as all that sounds, which is fantastic, that original system doesn't pale by comparison. Those SM112's were 20 years old before I got the itch to upgrade. They also play nicely with any amp/receiver you power them with. No need to contend with the magic/curse of component synergy.
Yes, the mids and woofers in the 112's in the video are not original and the trim rings are missing. The 125's look to be in pretty good shape. If a person needs a pair of speakers, you could do way, way worse than these, even if they need foam and a recap, as those are easy and inexpensive fixes that you can use as a gateway to the DIY side of the hobby.
    Rock on everybody, thanks cheapaudioman.

Other than being plagued with polydome rot, the Kappas are incredible speakers and worth the money. .The 6,7 and 8 models are fairly reasonable but the 9 series are pushing 2500 to 3000 because of the rarity of good condition units available. If I am correct the 9's had a reputation of being amp killers because they dipped well below 4ohms on peaks IMO Harman did a great job of taking the top end Infinity technology and brought it down their line but simultaneously got away from continuing to push the limits of high end. As a result Infinity just became a name recognition marketing tool and not the storied manufacturer it started as.

I got rid of them a few years ago since they took up far too much space and I put some Polk TSi100 and a Polk 10" powered sub to replace them. I do miss them though. Back when I was a younger man, I ended up with a pair of SM100 since they were the only thing I could afford . I wanted the SM150 with those giant 15" woofers, but those had to wait. I ended up getting them, but was only able to buy them one at a time. Still have both pairs to this day.
Those SM112 woofers were re-coned, if they are even Infinity drivers...same as the mids. They should look exactly like the SM125's. Over time the foam surround dries out and ends up disintegrating if you decide to try and use them...even if you took fairly decent care of them...ask me how I know :)
This series, well the original versions, were initially available as SM80, SM100, SM120 and SM150 denoting the size of the woofer. The SM80 were the only bookshelf, all others were floor standers. Infinity came out with the Kappa series which got rave review, but I hated them due to their excess mid-range...to my ears.

When I was just a little awkward strange teenage boy in the 90's I use to drool over the Infinity speakers at Service Merchandise and Silo's. I felt they were like a step or two above Cerwin Vega in my opinion. By the time I was working though I had got a job part time at a much higher end store. They dealt with brands such as Polk, Kef, Definitive Tech, Velodyne, Adcom, Mac, and so forth and I was buying that kind of stuff used. We didn't carry Infinity but someone wanted to use a pair as trade in and I told the sales guys I would buy them if they took them in. Mine had a 15 inch woofer and were just like that 2nd pair you showed us. Them speakers took so much abuse and lived through a 16 year old boy blasting Master of the Puppets on 11.

I wasn't a huge fan of that model in that series, but I had a set of the book shelfs SM 65's they were still are awesome. I noticed that yours is missing the port. I loved the smoothnes of the treble. They seriously rocked the house.

I found a set about that size and I had to replace the woofers and the mids in them. They originally had the plastic/vynil midranges and woofer with the foam crap surounde. They also have the Emit tweeters that sound surprisingly good still. The replacement speakers sounded better than the originals did. I paid 40 bucks for them probably 20 years ago knowing they were hurt because I also knew how good they were. I had a buddy who owned a raw speaker shop so I knew we'd find something that would be as good or better than the factory ones. I use them for the rear channels because I have a 8 inch 3 way set I built in the early 80s and have loved since. Soft dome midranges and tweeters, and Gefco long throw rubber suround woofers. I also have a decent cheap powered sub😁

The SM series came after Sid Harmon aquired the company, 1984 or so. Arnie Nudell frowned on the SM series but it was a profit center for the company. Arnie was right, the polycell tweeter is nothing compared to Arnies EMIT design, but emit was expensive to manufacture.

I'm still using my '94 mint SM-125s in rotation, still getting too loud too easily. Will never forget the dancing gal in a pink mini-skirt on the front of the sales brochure that had absolutely nothing to do with me buying them. Nothing has degraded. I refoamed the surrounds on my small bookshelf '94 RS-125s and they sound beautiful with a sub. Cabinets are on the RS-125s are thicker than a snicker.

The RS3, RSa, C3007, and Kappas with the Emit tweeter are the series to go for. These poly dome tweeters actually disintegrate cause theyre foam. Im very familiar and theres a reason the online consensus is these arent sought after.
But if they sound good to you have fun until you to have to replace that tweeter foam lol

I had the little brother of these, the SM-110s. The tweeters are stupid delicate, and if you get a set with intact tweeters, get some kind of fusing system on the tweeters. But they do sound good.

@robertbynon7189 I agree 👍 they used high quality crossover components, built there own drivers, used butyl rubber surround and was one of the first companies to use a computer crossover simulator. I found a pair of ads 2 way with a 10" woofer for $75 at a thrift shop near me and I slept on them because I am a diy speaker builder and I have more than I need. But the next day I wanted to buy and use as something to reference to and they were gone. Someone got a great deal. They were built in the town I live in. Not that it has to do with anything. I just think they were some of the best speakers of that time and still can out perform most speakers out there.

Polycell tweeters were used on several models, and sounded amazing. All of the top end models of Infinity speakers used EMIT tweeters and EMIM midranges since the 70's. Polycell tweeters were used on all of the lower end models, but sounded just as good in many ways as the ribbons. The SM models were in the 'Studio Monitor' series of speakers. Specifications were: 3 way, 3 driver loudspeaker system. Frequency Response: 32Hz to 27kHz.
Recommended Amplifier: 10 to 200W. Crossover Frequencies: 750, 5500Hz. Impedance: 8Ω. Sensitivity: 100dB. Hell of a bargain finding them in this condition for that price. SM 112's were identical in terms of sensitivity and impedance, but their frequency range was 59Hz - 25kHz, and they had a higher crossover point between the woofer and midrange.

Love watching your stuff, have for a while. Just wanted to chime in on these seeing as how I have collected numerous pairs of SM line Infinity speakers. Including SM-150, SM-112, SM-120, SM-122, SM-65, among others. My current set are SM-150 mint condition with original cardboard boxes, love them with some upgrades.
What I wanted to say was, those drivers are wrong. They should have the Polycell High Output tweeter. But the Midrange and woofer are not original to those speakers.
They should have a poly coated (shiny) black driver. Black and gold trim rings, with a typical foam surround on both. Infinity logo on the dust cap of the woofer.
Happy hunting, you should aquire the originals. They sound much better I'd assume.
Look into some internal cabinet bracing, poly fill on the inside, standoffs for the bottom and binding posts for the back.
The SM-125's there look to be correct!

I have infinity beta 50. Set with my denon, using audyssey, they sounded very good the last time i used them. From my memory they sounded better than my JBL studio 580 but because i finally got the JBL where i like them, i haven't changed them back. I do remember the biggest weakness on the infinity beta 50s, are the bass was a bit muddy in my small room.
If you don't have room correction don't even bother with them, though. They have shreeking upper mids if they aren't room corrected.

H/K receivers of that era had the best amp sections of any mainstream receivers. I had a 435. Very strong, high-current amplifiers. A 75 WPC rating was comparable to 130 WPC from most others. The 7550HD had two power supplies, one for the front L/R and one for the other 5 channels so you could properly bi-amp the fronts if you wanted to. A few other brands did the same with their top-tier avr's back in the day as well. As for Infinity speakers, I'll take the Danish produced Infinity Kappa 200, 400 or 600 ($$$) or the more common IL series over SM's. 🙂

Yeah, those mids and bass driver are replacements. Infinity sm-122, Birthday present 92-93. I think parents bought them for $225-250 at either Cicuit City or similar stere. Still in great shape minus the surrounds on the 10"woofers. I do remember the bass was lacking and tweeter control having no real effect. One of these day's I will refoam and try a few mods to improve them. I am in no hurry though.

Infinity hadda swell line of speakers in the later 1970's. Models Qe, Qa, Qb and the big boys like the Reference Standard ll. Good sound for the money. Employing their EMIT tweeters. A friend had the Qb's powered by a Pioneer SX-850 and they could get loud and stay clean-n-clear. Very impressive systems. Your SM-125's are from late 1990's. As long as you like'em, that's what counts.

I own a pair of SM-112 that i enjoy on a daily basis in my home office hooked up to my 90's Denon PMA-915R integrated amplifier, and streaming from Spotify on my PC by way of the SMSL SU-1 dac. The original 10" woofer and 4.5" midrange on your son-in-law's SM-112's have been replaced with some off-brand inferior products for sure. The factory midrange would look identical to the one on the SM-125 he has, and the woofer would look identical to that SM-125 12" woofer as well, but the 10" version.

Oh man... I had a nice set of Infinity back in the day... they were so 'solid' in the tone... fit my room perfect. Seems I had a automotive infinity that were great as well. My jems are Klipsch KG-4 , Bose 301 Series II, and Mission (bookshelf speaker) from England. The Bose 301 do not work for my current room, but I've had them tuned into a space properly and love the tones and surprised by the load they could take... coupled them with the Klipsch KG-4 in one perfect space. *Note foam replaced - source from "Nashville speaker guy" -- mostly powered by Marantz 2285B. Looking at your channel for another amp head (Marantz tubes and lights replaced, but the input channels have decayed). Memories.... I swear a buddy let me borrow these for a while. Infinity had some great cones... really solid tone on the ones I've enjoyed. Good share !
