Hey, just wanted to drop by and give a huge shoutout to you for being the ultimate problem-solving wizard when it comes to playing link cable games - turns out the secret ingredient was having two copies of the rom in the same directory, who would've thought?! You're a lifesaver, my friend - keep on being awesome! 🙌
thank you so much! this also works for me-chip macs in combination with playing delta on your iphone. all you need to do is to rename your .sav file accordingly. it is crazy that this video was the only solution to gen1 pokemon trading with yourself after hours of searching. big up!
4:13 - 4:45 I was able to skip this step and everything still worked 🙂. The ROMs still have to be unzipped though 😔 5:43 This setting is now in Quick Menu -> Core Options -> System -> Screen Layout 🙂
Hell yeah, thanks for this. I for some reason couldn't disable my keyboard from player 1 which was also using my ps5 controller, so I just plugged in a switch pro for player 2 and got my trade evos. Thanks again!
Definitely an informative video. But my girlfriend and I are playing through every gen of Pokemon on different computers. I wish there was a way to set up some local network to do links
i always wonder why there is no better way of link cable implementation. I would like to have a way to allow for split screen and online mode. Where you can connect the link cable to some one on the internet. Preferable over a Lobby Or Firend List instead of Configuring Portforwarding and Typing Ip Addresses that change every 3 days.
I had some problems with the second gameboy save but its done and its working, i tried to selftrade wtih VBA Link and it didnt worked but retro arch is great!
Tried to do the same with Pokemon Firered for Gameboy Advanced... Unfortunately I don't get that "Subsystem" in the menu. Is there a way to solve this for Gameboy Advanced or is this just working for Gameboy and Gameboy color?
Nice, it would be marvelous if it would be possible to do the same, but "hidding" 1 screen (like the option for selecting only the audio of 1 of the "games"), for the figting games like Street Fighter Alpha, Killer Instinct, KoF Heat of Battle, etc... 2 players, 1 screen and 1 audio. Regards, and good vídeo.... PD: If I have some time free... I'll will look out for a way of doing it "automatically" from CLI (command line), or mixxing CLI + Autohotkey scripts, or something... I hope to be lucky... and being able to launch the game "for to players"from a batch file (.bat), with just a "double click")
My saves do not load and it says failed to load save state from pocket monsters aka and pocket monsters midori. Also, there is no continue game option. However, the games do load vertically, just always at the start screen with professor oak. Somebody please help me.
What is even with some of the cores only being able to detect certain compression types? Manually downloaded the DeSmuME core and it would only list .zip compressed games and not the .rar that the majority of my games are as.
for some reason subsystems wont show up where it is supposed to be. i backed track to make sure i set the right directory but its just not there. did something change?
are there any complications involved in connecting two copies of the same game boy game? e.g., if you were trading between two copies of pokemon blue, is there anything special that needs to be done (or things to avoid) to ensure the right save files are loaded separately for "player 1" and "player 2" even if the rom itself is the same?
The save files would need to be named differently for the second player if the same game is being used. The core documentation page I link in the description should have a naming scheme outlined for that very purpose.
@@ArchadesGames It looks like those links might not be working, but I found on docs.libretro.com/library/sameboy/ that the convention is "gamename.srm.2". Thanks, not sure how I missed that when looking around for this!
@@ArchadesGames Hello! Thanks for the whole tutorial. Is it possible to make a video for this situation? Trading pokemons from the same gam and from the same save file? It would be very helpful!
Is there a way to automate this so it loads both games at once without having to navigate the retroarch menu? I'd like to make this more user friendly on my arcade cabinet using the launchbox/big box front end.
What if you're trying to trade Pokemon from the same game but from different save files? Save A having Bulbasaur and save B has Squirtle and you want to get all three starters on a single save all on Pokemon Blue.
This was my first time emulating on computer instead of Twilight Menu on my 3ds. Don't suppose anyone would be able to tell me how to activate the speed-up function that Twilight Menu had for GB/GBA games? I think it's called like, Turbo or something.
@@ArchadesGames damn it I wish there was a way to play cable emulation gba on retroarch that would be so cool but ig we have to wait and see what happens in the future... :(
Extremely helpful! For some reason the internet doesn't explain this anywhere else X3

super helpful 4 years later, thank you.
One of these years I will update this 🤣
Thank you so much, I finally was able to see the MP of a game I played to death when I was a kid

I’d love to see you try get the Gameboy Tower working in Pokémon Stadium 1 with an emulated Transfer Pak.
I just found your channel, this is great, thank you so much🙏

I may be late but maybe ftp your save to her computer and trade together on one computer.
for some reason every time i try to connect games it kicks me out retroarch. do you know what to do about this?
Same
awesome video, really helped me out for my pokemon challenges
Glad it can help out!

I'm trying to get this running on android, any way you can make a guide for android?
Hi, how can I do It with Retroarch 1.17 for Android platform?
Cool thanks, for some odd reasons visual boy advance didn't want to do multiplayer, but this world very nicely.
GBA doesn't have multiplayer support in Retroarch
This tutorial worked for Linux as well. Thanks!!

Aloha, Archades. By the way, is a bios needed to make sure the clock works like in the real life for Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal version?
No BIOS needed

Me salvaste la vida muchas gracias!
Happy gaming!
Question, the "subsystems" option just doesnt appear for me at all. Is there any reason as to why?
Even for me it does not appear.
@@PradyumnaSarma-or1fw You need to run the game using the SameBoy core. You won't see the Subsystems option if you're using another core like mGBA.
@@MK-cm6xo So we need to use PKHeX for different cores
Great tutorial!
Hello! I can't seem to find the subsystem in my main menu it's just not there. I'm on retroarch through steam btw. Appreciate any help or info.
What is even with some of the cores only being able to detect certain compression types? Manually downloaded the DeSmuME core and it would only list .zip compressed games and not the .rar that the majority of my games are as.
Rar is proprietary and Zip is built into every OS under the sun. That might have something to do with it 🤷
for some reason subsystems wont show up where it is supposed to be. i backed track to make sure i set the right directory but its just not there. did something change?
it only shows if you are using the sameboy core
Hey, so idk how that works, I played on a ROM using a different emulator, but when I used that ROM on this emulator, the progress wasn't there.
With this finally we can catch them all on retro arch. Any idea how to migrate to GBA games?
You will need a PC for that

Very good! One question, how can I do that using two diferent computers and using my friend saved file for him and mine for me? Thanks!
Won't get that functionality with Retroarch.
Is there a way to automate this so it loads both games at once without having to navigate the retroarch menu? I'd like to make this more user friendly on my arcade cabinet using the launchbox/big box front end.
Whenever I go into full screen or try to play a game, the window goes black.
I'm not sure what causes that. I'd hit up the Retroarch forums to see if anyone else has had a similar problem and a solution given.
I solved it, used the regular installer instead of nightly
Mine crashes when I choose to start the link...
Can you get Pokemon Red/Blue to have a fight in Stadium?
What if you're trying to trade Pokemon from the same game but from different save files? Save A having Bulbasaur and save B has Squirtle and you want to get all three starters on a single save all on Pokemon Blue.
Easiest way is to make a copy of the ROM with a second name and name the save to match
And when you were doing the thing with the box arts, you should have just gotten launch box it’s a gr8 software
Great video! I have the issue my games are in .gba is there a way to link them on mGBA?
GBA games don't have link support in Retroarch.
Who knows 🤷
Possibly, don't want to make any promises on the more obscure stuff since I don't own them.
Hey how do I move save files onto the same boy core I wanted to do this but I have been playing my games on the Mgba core
How do you do that online to simulate 2 ppl owning a game boy each?
This doesn't work on MacOS (it crashes), but it seems to work on Android, although I don't know how to map the 2nd controller, I need two overlays.
Crashes on my machine too (Ubuntu). Crashes when selecting "start link".
Nice video! Thank you! Is there any option to do the same with game boy advance games?
Not in Retroarch. Use standalone VBA for that
There's no subsystem in my retroarch!!
This was my first time emulating on computer instead of Twilight Menu on my 3ds. Don't suppose anyone would be able to tell me how to activate the speed-up function that Twilight Menu had for GB/GBA games? I think it's called like, Turbo or something.
Space Bar
A question
Only one game is played, can't control the other one.
I also tried the other buttons but nothing worked.
You need two controllers or assign the keyboard to one
Is this possible without a controller?
Same Problem not working without a controller, even if I have two keyboards
Gbc games in Gambatte have bad audio, but with VBA-M works without any issue.
Ok
First question can you do this to any game and second is can you do on gba?
It works for everything on Gameboy. There is no GBA link support in Retroarch, you need to use a standalone GBA emulator for it.
@@ArchadesGames thank you
can you do some tutorial for trading in pokemon emerald and firered or in pokemon emerald and emerald on retroarch?
You can't use Retroarch to trade in GBA games
Nice is there any way to trade on fire red?
Not in Retroarch.
@@ArchadesGames damn do you know any emulator that can trade in fire red?
Need to use VBA M
@@ArchadesGames thanks!
Is it possible to have netplay of a gameboy link game?
No
Do you know any standalone emulator capable of that? That could be an interesting topic for a future video.
Is there any way to do this online?
I want the nintendo splash screen to appear.
will this work for steam client?
how to go exit after trade?
You select the reset option
Does anyone know if it will work in a online session
Nope
Is there a version for gba yet?
Nope
Then is netplay link cable emulation possible?
Sadly not.
