You know what is great for reference pictures? Pure Ref! I've started using it and I cant imagine working without it. You have an empty canvas which size you can customize and it floats over photoshop just like an additional canvas. What's even better, is that you don't have to download any pictures, you just pull them onto the canvas straight from the internet, you can change the size of the images, flip them and adjust them. Seriously PUREREF is a lifesaver for me. Love your content btw. Keep up the good work!
I took schoolism courses and they did help me a lot, not only to paint better but also to organize my workspace. I started using secondary window after the courses and must say that it made my working process faster. But my ultimate favorite tip is "visualising through darkness": I used to paint from light to the darkest parts of the painting but now I always try to start from dark colors. This tip changed so much in my approach to painting. Thank you
thanks for all of these videos, Bobby. I just moved from Puerto Rico to New York in hopes of pursuing my master's degree in Art & Animation. Your videos are truly inspirational.
I took Daniel Arriagas and Stephen Silvers classes. It's hard to pick a specific best one, because they all got their own qualities. Stephens classes are probably the ones i spend most time on and leveled up the most. I started as a beginner 3 years ago and now looking back, i think i couldn't have made a better decision than starting with schoolism classes. Thank you so much Bobby for doing this and of course thanks to your buddys and teachers helping you with Schoolism! You once said you want to make an impact in the art community...in my eyes you really did already and it feels like its even getting better. Great tips by the way! I like this format of short tip videos besides the longer interviews! :)
Yeah, it can make you nutty when you're constantly trying to find your reference images - I started doing this a while back, but I'm glad he's showing others how to do it :)
Thanks for sharing those tips! I wish I knew about those for my last project...especially the references tip. These will come improve my process immediately! Thanks Bobby!
Wow! These tips are great! I was already compiling all my reference into a "reference page" document that I would open up in a second window, but this would make it way easier to see more than one piece of reference zoomed in at the same time! Clever stuff!
Robert and Dice's course was excellent, I leant so much about colour and light , plus the free dam keeper brush was a nice bonus. Jonathan Hardesty course also excellent for understanding shapes and values. One course I found too hard for myself but loved it - colour and light explained scientifically - forgotten the name of that one but yes wow amazingly detailed . Some made me nod off due to the presenters gentle monotone :)
Always sharing the good stuff Bobby! I'd like to add: Set your 2nd window to a working grey colour profile (after you've changed the proof setup from CMYK to that) with ctrl/cmd-Y and your tiny window is also your value checker :)
Thank you for tips! I was subscribed for Schoolism for a year and loved it a lot! Most of all i enjoyed Sam Nielson's courses (his lectures was very detailed and extremly helpful) and Painting With the light and colour by Tsusumi and Kondo (not only they taught a lot about color but showed a lot of amazing Photoshop tips).
OMG, This is the greatest tip,, I have been struggling with this problem for years now i don't have to Zoom in and out all the time, my god, Thank you!
Heard of the new window thing before but was too lazy to implement it in my workflow. Will try it out tomorrow. And nice way to organize your references. Definitely gonna give it a try too. Thank you for great tips Bobby.
These tips are great because they show a new approach to the process of illustrating. They can either change our workflow as inspire us to create new methods! I'm a subscriber to the Schoolism and studied the gesture and Character Design courses. Unfortunately I won't be able to renew my subscription. Maybe in the near future! Thank you!
Wow I knew about the second window trick but I've never seen such a straight forward method for arranging references. That'd be pretty neat for a mood board as well.
Awesome tips Bobby! I especially love the "window/arrange/new window" idea. Been using photoshop for almost a decade one way or another and always used navigator. I cant wait to save up and take some Schoolism courses.
Thanks for the tips !! I got an amazing year with Schoolism , I learn lot of things. My favorite lessaon was the one with Bobby Chiu and Robert Kondo. When my planning will be lighter I 'll subscribe again to discover new year of working ^^
Favorite class was the Painting Creatures with you, and I use the small window approach to all my paintings. It is a big help, and my eyes instinctively go back and forth now. Thanks for another great video!
Great tips. Thank you. My favorite course is the "Painting with light and color" with Dice Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo. Also the courses of Nathan Fowkes and Sam Nielson are very cool.
Excellent tips Bobby. Thank you. Currently following Thomas Fluharty Drawing course which is just great. I have an assignment about composition where we have to make up something balanced and elegant from 5 different images / objects. Needless to say the second tip was really helpful :-) I like the course, we learn as much watching all Thomas critiques than while watching the course itself. Good process ! I'm learning tons ... Hola Bobby, I have a schoolism subscription and REALLY got a lot out of Dice Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo painting course. Then Hardestys course reinforcing a lot of those same ideas, reading lights and darks and making decisions on the focus of a piece. It completely changed the way I look at art and how I practice each day. I hope one day to get into the schoolism house, it sounds like a hoot! I know this is off topic but... recently in one of your videos you told a story about a girl who did study sketches of a certain subject matter for like 2 solid weeks, then turned that knowledge into a job at Disney. What are some sketch exercises you do to LEARN about a subject matter instead of just blinding copying images of it over and over. Thanks for all you do Bobby!!!! Nick
I will try the new window tip, always used navigator only hahah thanks! I got a second screen for refs and it helps a lot, I can keep it open all on the side
Hi Bobby, I'm a happy subscriber and I wanted to say hi at ComicCon and thank you for all you do... but you were busy talking to someone. So rather than interrupt I'm the guy who took your picture; you had no idea who I was but you smiled pleasantly. Awkward, I realize. Anyway, thank you for all you do.
Bobby thank you for the video - motivating as always :) I just want to say this I've learned both of these tips at the Schoolism Live Workshop from Thierry LaFontaine and wow they have changed how I draw completely. Thank you - and for anyone who hasn't tried this, it makes a huge difference so give it a go!
amazing job you have done, i wonder if you have videos about brush settings and how do u use and create your own brushes. are u a cintiq or intuos guy?
Much appreciation for the time you put into these videos, im studying games development in college and want to be a concept artist, you have given me inspiration and motivation to draw so i thank you very much. please pick me for the comp :D ill work my ass off!
I wonder if the window tip works on clip studio paint Edit: Yes it does. Window>Canvas>New window Then you use that tab up in the upper line where the current works are and place it comfortable
Oh man you have me laughing about the zoom in and out part LMBO! If I draw far away it looks like a big mess when I am done, so I have learned a great deal from this tutorial and thanks for using grey scale. Having both a big pic and a small pic was very useful. I had already learned to use my references this was and it helps so much. Question: How do you determine what shades from grayscale to use in the colored finish and do you mix tones of other colors in that same range of grey? I am learning all the time. Thank you for your time.
i benefit from every class becouse i m a beginner and i m addicted to win this becouse of my family, i want to help them i want to help my sister but in the same i want to make the job concept art/illustration ect as my live, i really love it and dats why i rip off my ass every day 10-16 hours only 8 hours sleep, how i can do dat? becouse i being so love with dat what i m doing. pm. I LOVE YOU MAN!! this tips are very helpfull, i m apology becouse my english is bad i even learn for 8/9 month the language and in the same time i learn Painting. but when i not win it's just ok. i need time to learn, time to practice time to ask me serious question about painting. and in the END, thanks bobby chiu you help me really much and every time when i hear your adivce/tipps/interviews , its help me really ( you are like a guru from India ;) ) Thanks.
i use krita software, please could you show how to use the small window in the software and how to properly use the program. I've never really use the schoolism website but i have checked it out and i've found the little shorts truly helpful but all the seminars are only in parts of wales or Scotland, please could there be some in central London or near the city. thnkx for reading;3
Hey Bobby very nice tips, i am a big fan of your work and your videos, they help me a lot to improve myself so, thank you very much for them =). But so, i just want to ask you what subscriptions on schoolism do you recommend for comic book artists that want to get a more dynamic composition and some refined line art on pencils. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

The small zoomed out window tip was excellent. Makes perfect sense to be able to keep track of the composition as a whole.
thanks for all of these videos, Bobby. I just moved from Puerto Rico to New York in hopes of pursuing my master's degree in Art & Animation. Your videos are truly inspirational.

such a good tips! it's the first time i see a references organisation that actually works well
Thanks for sharing those tips! I wish I knew about those for my last project...especially the references tip. These will come improve my process immediately! Thanks Bobby!
That's a great tip Bobby thanks, multiple windows workflow is much better than how I was doing. Also thanks for all your videos and tutorials.
Since I switched careers to be a developper I haven't spend enough time on my art. This one drew me back a little, thanks for that!

definitely an amazing tip, never saw anyone doing it before. John Craig always say, start bigger and than go smaller.
Some RUclips videos are hype and then BS.... These are TOP TIPS pure and simple. Thanks..
I am so excited to use the reference trick that is amazing!
Always sharing the good stuff Bobby! I'd like to add: Set your 2nd window to a working grey colour profile (after you've changed the proof setup from CMYK to that) with ctrl/cmd-Y and your tiny window is also your value checker :)

Wow, I never knew you could clone another window like that, that'll def. make a huge difference in my workflow. Thank you for the awesome tips!
Heard of the new window thing before but was too lazy to implement it in my workflow. Will try it out tomorrow. And nice way to organize your references. Definitely gonna give it a try too. Thank you for great tips Bobby.

Ooh I love you for this! Big THANK YOU (again) , Bobby!
Great tip!! I always needed a better way to have reference around my work!! Thanks Bobby!

Love the window tip, I learned it from another one of your videos years ago. The references one is a good one too! 👍👍👍
I love this, thanks Bobby! I loved your Skype conferences at the House Workshop last month! I can't wait to take Schoolism classes in the future!
I loved your digital painting class. I took it a couple of years ago... I just wish I could rewatch the lessons. :(
Favorite class was the Painting Creatures with you, and I use the small window approach to all my paintings. It is a big help, and my eyes instinctively go back and forth now. Thanks for another great video!

This technique works great with the fundamental of realism I am watching now!
Great tips! I learned the 1st one from a previous video of yours, but forgot how to do it, so the reminder was a great help.

Does the new window tip work on Sketchbook Pro?
