A very nice job. I never thought of leaving my bowl blanks square I usually round them but I have a nice bit of birch to turn. Hope you enjoy the coffee.
Hi Anthony...
Thank you...
I have done a couple of square bowls and have enjoyed the simplicity of them...
Just watch out for catches on the tips and of course be careful with those knuckles...
I hope that you enjoy making yours...
Thank you so much for the coffee... large Latte.. mmmmm ... Haha..

this is something different to make , just came across you today .... really nice bowl ... from calif desert
Hi Calif...
I'm so glad that you have found me and also that you liked the bowl...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Very nice, Andy. I made my first square bowl from maple as well. It's quite a bit smaller though. About four inches square.
Hi Archie...
Thank you...
I would love to see a picture of your bowl...
This one was only 6x6 so not much bigger than yours...
I must do more of these...they are great beginner projects...

I really like simple and straight forward! Sometimes the wood just speaks for itself. Your little square bowl is a case in point. Beautiful just as it is. Thanks for sharing Andy.
Hi Ted...
Thank you so much for your kind words...
Simple and straightforward is what I do best ...Haha..
I totally agree with you that the wood doesn't need to be over embellished sometimes...

Nice work Andy. That looks great.
Hi John...
Thank you very much...

I’m a newbie since February 2023 when I got my lathe. I’ve noticed that a lot of the people that I tried to teach us movies on simple projects. Use carbide cutters. How much harder is it to do these projects? Would you prefer to learn how to use the gouges? Oh, and by the way, the little bowl is cute I like it.
Hi Lynda...
A lot of new turners use carbide cutters now... they are easier to use and don't need sharpening.. the round ones can be turned around to use a different side of the cutter..
The square one has the 4 sides to use and the diamond cutter has just the2 ends...
I quite often use a round carbide cutter for the inside of bowls because I find it easier than the bowl gouge which I tend to get catches with...my fault.. I should practice more using it...
Standard woodturning chisels do need to be kept sharp though , so you do need a bench grinder or one of the special sharpening systems ( very expensive)..
I use a bench grinder and a gouge jig for sharpening the gouges which can be tricky...scew chisels , parting tools and scrapers are easier , just copy the original angles...
Most people start with a chisel set , if you have one then that's great.. practice with them and if you find that you need any more just add them as and when you need them...
A standard set can do everything that you will need...
All woodturners have way more than they really need...and only use a few on a regular basis..
If you do have set.. then I would recommend adding a round carbide cutter..not essential but handy for difficult bowls...
I hope that this helps ... it can be confusing...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Quick turned bowl so pretty.
Hello from "across the pond"! That's quite a lovely bowl. I find it interesting to see which woods are scarce in different parts of the world. Maple is quite common in the area in which I live.
Hi Morningwoodturning...
Thank you... I'm glad that you liked it...
It is interesting about the different species of trees in different areas...
I like Maple and Walnut but both are expensive over here...
Our nearest to Maple is Sycamore.. but it's not as pale and as a tree the Autumn colours aren't there...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Nicely done Andy. As always, enjoyable to watch.
Hi Bob...
Thank you so much...
I'm glad that you enjoyed watching this one...

Hi Again Andy,
Nice bowl project, it's turned out very nice, inspired me to attempt it. Like you I have a bit of a chalenge in sourcing 'nice' type of timber, but Thanks, enjoy your channel. Must befriend some tree surgeons!
Steve
Hi Steve...
Thank you very much...
I'm glad that you liked it and that you are enjoying my videos...
It's always nice to hear that someone is having a go at one of my projects...

Hi Andy 👋🏻 What a lovely bowl, the two different finishing treatments both work equally well, I would say… The bottom with the lacquer does seem a bit more glossy but the slight contrast adds even more interest to the piece 👍🏻 The shape and the grain of the maple work beautifully together 😎 and well done with the sanding of the dangerous corners 👏🏻 Looking at the finished bowl, I cannot help but wonder what my porridge would taste like in it… Probably makes your hair stand on end 🤪 Well done, Andy, have a lovely week 🙏🏻😊 Bye from ☀️ Switzerland 👍🏻😉👋🏻 Jude
Hi Jude 😉
I'm glad that you liked it...
I won't pretend that the two different finishes were deliberate... I think that I had a senior moment ... Haha .
This was my first time using Maple and I do really like it...
Those corners flying round can be a bit scary.. Haha...
Oooh... porridge... I also love a bowl of porridge... I often eat it with a wooden spoon so why not a wooden bowl as well...
The week and the weekend have passed by... where does time go...
I hope that you had a lovely weekend...
Take care...All the best.....Andy 👋😊👋 from Cornwall ...😉
Beautiful work Andy 👏! Maple is some nice wood to work with. I think I'm going to get some of that wood wax 22. It makes a great shine. I've made my own abrasive paste and polish but it doesn't do that good. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Hi Stephen...
Thank you so much...
My 1st time with Maple and I love it... must get some more if I can...
Woodwax 22 is a good product but not that dissimilar to basic beeswax polish...
I have made abrasive paste.. the 1st batch with diatomaceous earth. Mineral oil and beeswax which was really good...
The 2nd batch I thought that I would improve it by adding pummice powder and rottenstone to the mix.. these are finer powders and I thought that I would get a higher shine from them..
I made it more of a paste like consistency which was easier to apply...
Unfortunately it was not actually as good as the 1st batch.. why .. I don't know..
I haven't used Yorkshire grit or Acks paste so can't compare...
Perhaps 3rd time lucky ... Haha...
God bless you and yours...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
@@AndysCornishCreationsThe abrasive paste I made is diatomaceous earth, mineral oil and beeswax as well.
Hi Andy,
You did great my man!
But I gotta ask: what do you prefer to do; turning or carvings? Love both! 👍👍👏👏👌👌
Hi Roy...
Thank you so much...
I'm glad that you enjoy both carvings and turning...
I enjoy both...
Turning is easier for me because I can go into my workshop and everything is ready to go...
When I'm carving I have to get everything out and prepared before I can start actually carving...
If I were more organised and tidy it would help a lot... Haha
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Hi Andy,
I watched with great attention. You did another great design. I always take notes. And I would love to make copies of them. I hope I will do it soon. Thank you for sharing. Cheers Andy.
All the best. Your friend Mehmet
Hi Mehmet...
Thank you again for your kind words...
You should really have a go at making one...
It is quite an easy design to make...
Just be careful not to get catches on the corners..
And be careful to keep those fingers away from those corners !!!
But most of all.. enjoy making it...

Is the recess preferable to the tenon when making a plate?
Great looking square bowl Andy. Great finish as well.
Take care,

Hi Gary...
Thank you very much...
2 different finishes for the price of one .. Haha...
I'm not sure what happened there... senior moment perhaps...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
That looks a very aggressive round carbide cutter you have there. Seems much more angry than mine & I like the way you have swept back the bar. What diameter cutter have you used ? Thanks .
Hi Rich...
The cutter is from a set of 4 shapes from China and is 12mm in diameter...
The bright steel round bar is 15mm diameter and 400mm long..
I prefer to use it for hollowing rather than the bowl gouge...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Bice job Andy - I'm making one tomorrow so just in time to teach me.
Hi Gavin...

i did one last week ..........i was a little off centre ,,,,,,,,,enjoy
Hi Mark...
Was it deliberate or at least off centre enough to pretend that it was deliberate... Haha..
I guess that you could sand one side down a bit more to compensate...
I want to do another where the wings turn down to form feet for the bowl...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Hi Andy, I have to agree with everyone else, That is a gorgeous looking little bowl.
Great video as ever.

Nice one👍🏻
I’m watching from Canada.
All kinds of maple here.
No pun intended.
From the tree services over here I get maple and Cherry on regular basis.
Funny how it works.
I can’t get what you have and you want what I have.
Turn on brother.
Cheers Tim 🇨🇦

I must admit that I do envy you for your abundance of Maple...

Hi Debra...
I'm glad that you liked it..
My pleasure...
Great to hear from Michigan...

Nice bowl, Andy. You could have used that catch as an enhancement. If it wasn't so expensive to ship across the pond, I could give you all kinds of maple, oak and cherry. Take care.
Bill
Hi Bill...
Thank you...
Haha... yes that catch did create a bit of a spiral...
I don't do a lot of bowl turning so I lack a bit of experience with the bowl gouge...
Which is why I switched to the safety of the carbide cutter ...
Postage is way too expensive for heavy objects like these..
But I do envy you guys in America for the choice of different timber that you have...
Maple and Walnut probably the most ...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
