Oh my god! You’re right. That’s why his dad’s crying and he gets headaches every morning! Asking Jesus if could just make it to five. Aaaaaaaaagh!!!😭😭 🥺
I don't think it's necessarily sung by a dying child, he's out and about on his tricycle and playing with Raymond who kicks his shin, his mummy mentioned going to school in August, his father may be crying because of experiences in World War 2, Bowie sometimes alluded to this war as he born within its influences. Young children always wish to be older and his childs prayer is to the 'photograph' of Jesus to make him five.
Yeah, it makes sense if you look at the lyrics. I *might get to go to school if I'm good. If I'm well. Wants to be able to eat butterflies without being sick. Fell and everyone "soppied" him. Because he is a sickly child that people are worried about. It's a sad song when you look at it that way but also amazing that Bowie managed to create a haunting double meaning in an otherwise fairly camp, sentimental song when he was only 20

This short promotional film was made at the time but I don't think was seen until it was released on the, "music home video", entitled, "Love You Till Tuesday", in 1984...

Seeing this, I am reminded of the BBC recording of his performance of "Oh you pretty things" in 1972 for the Old Grey Whistle Test. It's all so peerfectly formed, so meticulously developed and here, even before his career had begun. He's such a prodigy. Even scary. Thank you for posting. It's a revelation.
For some reason I find this song makes me very sad - to the point of tears. I first heard D.B. when I was 16. From the time I first saw that Aladdin Sane photo, I was smitten. From then on I lived, ate and breathed his music, lyrics and persona, and they kept me out from under the wheels of a subway train many times. This is a brilliant song.
One of his best songs. As an eyepatch wearer I can confirm that it is perfectly true that the people on that side can't see me, which allows for all sorts of naughtiness in public places.
Lyrics: When I'm five I will wash my face me hands all by myself When I'm five I will chew and spit tobacco like my grandfather Jones 'Cause I'm only four and five is far away When I'm five I will read the magazines in mummy's drawer When I'm five I will walk behind the soldiers in the May Day parade 'Cause I'm only four and grown-ups walk too fast Yesterday was horrid day, 'cause Raymond kicked my shin And mummy says if I am good, she'll let me go to school in August Daddy shouted loud at mummy and I dropped my toast at breakfast And I laughed when Bonzo licked my face, because it tickled I wonder why my daddy cries and how I wish that I was nearly five When I'm five I will catch a butterfly and eat it and I won't be sick When I'm five I will jump in puddles, laugh in church and marry my mum And I'll let my daddy do the washing-up If I close one eye, the people on that side can't see me I get headaches in the morning and I rode on Freddie's tricycle And everywhere was funny, when I ran down to the sweetshop Then I fell and bleeded-up my knee and everybody soppied me I saw a photograph of Jesus and I asked him if he'd make me five I saw a photograph of Jesus and I asked him if he'd make me five When I'm five When I'm five When I'm... So talented. He performed and wrote that from the perspective of a four year old. I remember one of my granddaughters talking and waiting for months to turn three years old. This man was made to be on this Earth and instill awe in all of us.
One of the reasons that David is fantastically fabulous ❤️✌️
I love this video, something about its simplicity is so endearing. David was such a wonderful actor
David Bowie pure genius I love his work.
One of my very favourite David moments, it's so lovely x
Genius...happy my mind was open to appreciate his talent and artistry
His childlike mannerisms are perfection here.
This is just marvelous,RIP David you are in our hearts for ever.
This is amazing..... no more comment, just enjoying. Thanks for sharing
So pure and adorable.
Just too much cuteness to handle 🥰
One of his best songs. As an eyepatch wearer I can confirm that it is perfectly true that the people on that side can't see me, which allows for all sorts of naughtiness in public places.
You must get David Bowie's first album
We love you David
What a privilege to see these old gems. I always discover more proof of the genius that is Bowie.
Haven't watched this clip for ages. He was asking for MANY hugs .......
Lyrics:
When I'm five
I will wash my face me hands all by myself
When I'm five
I will chew and spit tobacco like my grandfather Jones
'Cause I'm only four and five is far away
When I'm five
I will read the magazines in mummy's drawer
When I'm five
I will walk behind the soldiers in the May Day parade
'Cause I'm only four and grown-ups walk too fast
Yesterday was horrid day, 'cause Raymond kicked my shin
And mummy says if I am good, she'll let me go to school in August
Daddy shouted loud at mummy and I dropped my toast at breakfast
And I laughed when Bonzo licked my face, because it tickled
I wonder why my daddy cries and how I wish that I was nearly five
When I'm five
I will catch a butterfly and eat it and I won't be sick
When I'm five
I will jump in puddles, laugh in church and marry my mum
And I'll let my daddy do the washing-up
If I close one eye, the people on that side can't see me
I get headaches in the morning and I rode on Freddie's tricycle
And everywhere was funny, when I ran down to the sweetshop
Then I fell and bleeded-up my knee and everybody soppied me
I saw a photograph of Jesus and I asked him if he'd make me five
I saw a photograph of Jesus and I asked him if he'd make me five
When I'm five
When I'm five
When I'm... (yawn)
oerskmi p This Freddie could’ve been Freddie Mercury lol
True XD
Draven Wang This song is from a 1969 album. David didn’t meet FM tlll the 80’s.
oerskmi p No, this is from a 1969 album. They hadn’t met.
Louise Voraujan I know tho I’m just joking
So talented. He performed and wrote that from the perspective of a four year old. I remember one of my granddaughters talking and waiting for months to turn three years old. She just beamed on that day and it shows in the Birthday pictures. Seems like yesterday and now she's nine going on ten. Childhood goes by way to fast. I have an even more favorite by David Bowie in this same vein titled, "There is a Happy Land".
I don't know why everyone says he didn't REALLY become David Bowie until Ziggy. Everything leading up to that was fascinating in its own way.
It has been 2 years at least since I’ve seen this. Thank you truly for sharing this video, it has always been very special to me. ❤️🥀
he was such a good actor!! his transformation in this video is incredible
I wish this guy continued to make music when he grew up
If your ever down watch the innocence of a young guy who one day would be one of the greatest ever.love this.
seeing that it says David Bowie posts make me so happy
So nice and soft.
Didn’t know I needed this song ♥️thank you for uploading it my life is now significantly improved ♥️♥️
There is a lack of appreciation of his early work. Some real gems, like "let me sleep beside you, Little boy blue". etc
Great Performance, Song and Video, you can see the depths of his talent.
HE SSO ADORABLE as his inner child! :'(
Never heard this played before, I gotta find me a candle like that for my living room lol
So lovely to see and hear songs from the Kenneth Pitt film
I’m a HUGE Bowie fan, but this is my first time hearing this song
I fell and bleeded up my knee... just brilliant. Already! Never be another being like Bowie.
AAAAWWWWWWWWEEEEE!!!! He’s so young and adorable I love David Bowie❤️❤️ I miss him so bad
I turn 55 this week I have never ever heard this song, its so damn poignant it cuts like a knife. Thanks David
I don’t remember this episode of Suite Life of Zack and Cody
He’s so in touch with his child side in this.
Simply brilliant. Very emotive lyrics.
David sure was irreversible in everything he did. Turn him inside out and right side in and he was a true talent. Miss him . This album is one of my favs
He would be alive as long as we love him!
I regard him as "Heroes".
So funny you say that, I heard that song today at the pool and was singing it quietly. He was my hero. I was in 6th grade when he passed. Unfortunate..
