    Just did my first brake pad change and it was nice and simple thanks to this video. Good tip from the comments to use a G clamp to put the pistons back in the caliper. I found putting on the first pad and then using the G clamp on the pad so both pistons go back together slowly. Obviously make sure your G clamp has a rubberised protection pad so as not to damage the brake pad. Also I didnt open the brake fluid reservoir, there should be enough space in there to take the fluid back from the calipers. Assuming you havent filled it up to max when the pads were not at their biggest depth. Bike: ER6-F 2016.

      Cheers for that, agreed with the G clamp it makes life a load easier. Good tips mate, thanks for sharing!

      +3213089 I found a caliper paint aerosol can in metallic blue at amazon. will match nicely with my bike color.

    Useful video but you missed an important step that would be necessary if you were actually changing the pads for real: compressing the pistons. For anyone who doesn't know, if your pistons have a cross on them they may need to be rotated back in which requires a special tool, otherwise you'll need to get a piston compressor tool or some massive hand muscles.

    Hi Tony, just check them from time to time and St about 1-2mm change them.

    Copper grease on copper plated pads = waste of grease, that's the whole point of copper backing plates, so they don't rust or corrode to the mating points, another point, no need where it's not touching even with steel backed plates. High temp all purpose grease on retaining and slide pins, and a good clean first.

    My 2001 ER-5 has very similar brake too. Tokico, and looks exactly like this, probably because it's the same.

    Hi, nice vid, if i do this, were my current pads are very thin, would i need to open the fluid to allow the piston back so i have enough room. OR should there be enough room from when these pads where new.. HA!

    What i also do is to open the brake fluid resovour and then i use a g-cramp to push the pot back slowly , watching the fluid all the time so not to mess..

    This is helping quite a bit. Do I put "Copper Eze" on the cylinder behind the pad as well? Did you replace your springs? How did you get the springs out/in without breaking them? Thanks!

    • @PatchworkWelding
      @PatchworkWelding  9 лет назад

      No, it's too abrasive for that just on the rods and the back of the pads.

    • @PatchworkWelding
      @PatchworkWelding  9 лет назад

      And I left the springs in, just cleaned around them.

      Only put copper ease on the pads, I've not replaced the springs yet after 4 years.

    I can't get my calliper off the disc any advice? Yours removes very easy

    • @PatchworkWelding
      @PatchworkWelding  4 года назад

      Wiggle it, it will be because you disc has worn a lip on to it and if you wiggle it the piston should compress allowing it to come off

    How many miles before you should change your pads? Thanks

    • @PatchworkWelding
      @PatchworkWelding  9 лет назад

      Hi Tony, just check them from time to time and I would consider changing them at 1-2 mm.
