Sam is a real treasure! I sure hope you guys all realize that he is a true asset to have around and treat him as such, not just a meme to put in the videos. I think you all mean more to him than you realize, take it from an old guy, it means a lot to pass on some of what you know and to be valued for your experience.
@@JHDieseland4X4 Its funny to see the comments on Garretts channel about Sam, people think he is just an old man that hangs around the guys! They have no clue about his background and what all he does and knows about.

Sam is a absolute legend. It's amazing how cleeter made him a part of the team. I just want to know when they are going to build him a ride to go down the track with.
I would have went with a hydraulic roller cam with Morel lifters . You have to keep lots of Zinc additive to keep those BBC flat tappets from rounding off ( or use Amsoil Z-Rod oil after breaking in with their break-in oil). Can't wait to see it mudding !
Most people have no clue why you have to “break in” a flat tappet cam. The only way the cam lobes are lubricated is from oil sling off the crankshaft. That’s why the 2k rpm is so important… To produce enough “sling” to lubricate the lobes as the lifters and lobes seat to one another… 👍
@@robwigglezz944 yeah… another thing not many people know… they’re slightly round on the bottom. And the cam lobes are angled, not square. This is to make the lifters spin. When they quit spinning is when it wipes the lobe out 👍 all reasons why I run a hydraulic roller lol
They are no way 781's, those are pnut port that look like someone tried to gasket match to oval port. Even if his new heads aren't a name brand they should pick up a lot of flow at least.
All the Florida Crew are solid folks! All the way down to ol Cooper Bogetti! They are all killing it in their own way! Love it guys keep it up JH! Love the honesty homie!
Probably already together, but if the valvesprings are dual, remove the inners for the 20 minute break in. Then put them back in. The cam instructions should say it. Fun project!
Dot on crank goes up for on cam gear goes down,be sure to check push rod length and roll the motor over by hand to check for coil bind and valve clearance. I'm sure if you got a top end kit it was all ready spect but always good to double check
I have a sbc in my race car. It’s a pretty basic 9.5:1CR race engine. Aftermarket pistons, rods, and heads. It has a Weiand intake, long tube IMCA headers, and one of the biggest hydraulic camshafts I could find, but it’s pushing 450hp.
What’s the valve spring pressure? Flat tappet cams can’t run a high pressure spring. 120-130 psi closed pressure is ok. On double springs it’s recommended to run the outer spring only during break in then add the center spring after
Definitely prime oil system until you get oil out of all push rods and use a good break-in oil Non-detergent with zddp, did not realize you are in my back yard. Great stuff!
Compression ratio was your enemy. Those peanut ports with the dish piston was around 8-1. I hope your new heads are closed chamber 100cc rather than 120cc or you'll be in that same boat.
You could buy a gear drive if having timing gears makes you feel a little better or you like the sound of it but there’s Nothing wrong with a double roller timing chain if it’s a decent one
Heads, cam and intake alone will not take a 454bbc to 550hp. I own 2 of them 1 is now a 481ci 750hp and the other is a 505ci 825hp and started stock with both trust it takes more than that. Better spray it too to get those numbers. It's got dished pistons it's ready for some spray and good fuel.
@@reloadingfun Show me dyno sheets (I have mine)cause I have a pair that started stock and have been built up as I went and never have I seen on anyone I know or my own have heads cams picked 250hp on a 454BBC closer to 150 in my experience which won't get you to 550hp.

Watch the videos. They worship that man.
They love Sam no doubt!
There's a reason he is on everyone channel
He wouldn't be there if they didn't.

I said the same thing last video but I said 18”. Lol

Unless your brand new lifters are literally flat and no matter what you do, you're already screwed

Ol Sam definitely knows cams!

When I put in a cam, I always moly grease everything with way more than you think you'd need, you can't use too much.
Check the timing curve, a recurve kit will really help out.
it's nice to see sam on your chanal Justen is funny and very helpful
I really like seeing more of the power upgrade videos. Truck is coming along very nicely. Epic seeing Sam too.
Wish people would put Part numbers/info in the descriptions of videos, be helpful for others that are looking for a direction to go with projects
Never underlube guys! 💪🤘💯
If those are 781 heads you took off, they're really decent stock heads. Worth about $300 to $500 for a decent set

You should look at a larger carb.
750 is small on that

Don’t forget thrush washer for the cam

Sam to the rescue. Sam the man.
Wise decision to ask the legend Mr.sam for advice
Bout to slap the bottom end right out that rig!!
I think there was supposed to be a plate behind your timing gear.
This is not a roller camshaft. No cam plate on a flat tappet cam
Definitely prime oil system until you get oil out of all push rods and use a good break-in oil Non-detergent with zddp, did not realize you are in my back yard. Great stuff!
I don't think I've ever been that careful with a cam! Coming out or going in 🤣🤣🤣
I'm sure you got a great deal, but that thing is really not a bad unit, I love it!! It certainly has got character and you do great work buddy!!
The old saying you can’t judge a book by its cover applies to this engine ,it looks mint inside . A well maintained unit by the looks of it
I can't wait to see that thing rip it!
Awesome video guys!
Hey JH!
Thank You for making so much content! Really appreciate all your effort!
Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas JH!!
Nice - cant wait to hear it....
Sam the master of shine
It’s cool that truck has an engine plate. Looks like it’s been on there a hot minute
Great content thanks for sharing
Just crank the idle up to at least 2000 rpm .
And add a zinc additive the the oil
On first start up.
Good luck. That truck will fly now
I would have liked to see a roller cam conversion given what modern oils are like but I'm sure you'll make good power as is. What is the engine from?
Run driven oil by joe Gibbs. Has all the good stuff in it!!
you should add a new oil drive system including the shaft .
Literally nothing better than a BBC
Good job brother
Sam is the man love that guy
Big up Mr Sam.
Got you a great hand working with you hold
on to ya buddy
Pls cover how you'd improve oiling and make the engine live
I'd love to see you put a big supercharger on that block; I've been noticing NA is kinder to big blocks than turbocharging it.
Do something like a Holley sniper kit should bring you to about 600-650
Did you forget the cam retaining plate
Not required with a flat tappet cam.
hell yea brother cant wait for the nos vid to come out lol i am sure it will be soon after the next event the truck goes to
Looks like yall are rebuilding a motor in the attic.
Break in lube on the lobes is the most important thing you need your lifters to be spinning freely
Compression ratio was your enemy. Those peanut ports with the dish piston was around 8-1. I hope your new heads are closed chamber 100cc rather than 120cc or you'll be in that same boat.
You might want to ask Sam what the plate and two bolts you have left over is for! 😜
No need for one on this style cam. Look it up. This is a flat tapper style camshaft. No cam holder or plate from factory
@@JHDieseland4X4 I stand corrected, keep up the great vid’s 🙂👍🏻
@@JHDieseland4X4 I believe it needs a cam button then!
@@roodgeregeld they'll figure it out I'm sure.......
@@roodgeregeld no cam button required with flat tappet cam. JH did it correct. I was glad to see him use a new double roller timing chain.
All that power and no lockers
I think you forgot the cam retainer plate. Might be a good idea to degree the cam.
Don't forget the retainer
I think you forgot the plate to hold in the cam.
Flat tappet cams have a slight taper on the lobes which helps prevent them from moving forward, no need for a button or retainer plate
You could buy a gear drive if having timing gears makes you feel a little better or you like the sound of it but there’s Nothing wrong with a double roller timing chain if it’s a decent one
Mr Sam said “TikTok you’re done!”
Thought you were gonna have an allergic reaction to spark plugs 🤣👍
Need to get jackstand Jimmy over to help you with them spark plugs and a bottle
No cam retainer plate?? Or cam button?
What you want for the old heads
Heads, cam and intake alone will not take a 454bbc to 550hp. I own 2 of them 1 is now a 481ci 750hp and the other is a 505ci 825hp and started stock with both trust it takes more than that. Better spray it too to get those numbers. It's got dished pistons it's ready for some spray and good fuel.
You can get 550 horse on a 454 with with a head and cam upgrade. It's been done many of times.
@@reloadingfun Show me dyno sheets (I have mine)cause I have a pair that started stock and have been built up as I went and never have I seen on anyone I know or my own have heads cams picked 250hp on a 454BBC closer to 150 in my experience which won't get you to 550hp.
Might check summits carb calculator to make sure you don’t need more carb.
Little disturbing talking about lubing your shaft while looking directly into the camera haha
What is the duration of the cam at .050 and what heads did you use?
Hey doppey put the gear on and u can walk the cam in
Suprised you didn't go with a roller cam make sure you run zinc!
@JH Diesel and 4X4
EVERYTHING NEEDS NITROUS JUSTIN
Justin and Sam was minty 👌 both guys are legends
I have never messed with a big block myself do they not have a cam retainer plate? 🤷♂️ sorry that might be a stupid question lol
😁👍 very cool 😎
I would have went with a roller cam just for the peace of mind
sam to the rescue hahaha nice video
Did y'all put the cam retainer in
Does a big block Chevy not have a cam retainer plate ?
Next upgrade is a Holley sniper EFI
Those were peanut port heads... Good for 230 horses.... You'll be doubling that at least!!
If your looking for hp, why did you put a flat tappet cam in it ?? Roller wether it be hydraulic/ solid roller you’d net a lot of extra hp
Yea you know when you grab a old of some iron bbc heads they’ll let you know real quick there heavy
Do 454s not have a cam lock plate on the front?
Hey jh I notices your forgot to put the plate behind the cam gear. Just wanted to bring that up before you fired that thing up
Those stock heads are peanut port emission heads..absolute shit and the new aluminum ones are a huge improvement.
Bro you need to make sure that those springs don't get bound up and broke because you have a higher lift cam. Seen it happen just need to check it.
You should try to go EFI, because the fuel slush is around in the bowls too much
Sam is my favorite out of this friend group and RUclips channels
Aslong as you've seen the light and understand that when you're burning gasoline, Chevrolet does 'er best!
You forgot to put the Cam retaining plate
