Leash probably snapped when he hit the release. It happens on old lines and saw it happen on a brand new bar also. You forgot one of the big rules......never kite in a storm. To be fair i got in a similar situation years ago. Was a nice day but I wasnt paying attention to the sky. Front came through and it went from 20mph to 50mph, smoke over water in minutes. I just stayed in water till it passed. So strong I couldn’t keep the kite over my head or i would fly away, kinda scary. No thanks.
You could’ve probably handelde the kite if you put it down to your right side on the water, aspecially with hard wind, the speed of the wind lower to the water the is exponentially decreased
good call to dump the kite, your life is more precious than 9 meters of fabric

To be honest it was the only once I didn’t attached leash🤬 and It’s hard to avoid storm If you chasing 20+m jump🤙
