I live in The Bahamas 🇧🇸, and I have never heard of anyone who lives on a boat ever deciding to ride out a storm in their water home. In case people are unaware, hurricanes are extremely dangerous and are responsible for many deaths and lots of destruction. Some years back, I don't remember which hurricane it was, but that storm literally brought 2 huge metal hulled ships and deposited them both on the beach across from the station where I worked. It was amazing to see that. I never knew that it was possible, but there they were, sitting on the beach for a few weeks before they were finally relaunched. Hurricane Dorian, that hit the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama took many lives in this country. It stayed over the island of Abaco for a long period of time just beating up that island. Do not take hurricanes lightly. They are a force to reckon with!

Not to be unsympathetic to those who have invested their lives into living on that Island. But at this point I feel very strongly that the best course forward is to make Sanibel Island a nature preserve. We are seeing barrier islands that have been inhabited for years, generations even, sinking and becoming uninhabitable. My heart breaks for the friends and familys of the 45 lives lost to this storm. Nature takes its course, building houses in the beach where water/hurricane naturally comes around eight times annually. It's like building a house in receded river, you know it's going to fill up sooner or later. They love the beach view on a good day and I love it under water. No one should build one kilometre where the water shore ends. If they did that none of these houses will be there, and that's the be best way to save lives and property, but people are greedy.

A house boat that can't be moved easily before an approaching storm seems to defeat the practicality of it being on a boat. But we all know people aren't shopping for practicality.
I'm with you on no residential homes within a certain distance. Turn it all into national park/wetlands. There's already a federal relocation program in place for the residents of Isle de Jean Charles, Louisiana due to sea level rise. I suspect there will be more to follow.
I'd love to live on the beach myself, but unless it's in the form of camping or living in a little bamboo tiki hut that costs all of 500 dollars to re-build (and we all know building codes won't allow that), I'll live elsewhere.

Starting with Donna, the first one I remember, until this this storm spawned a tornado two miles from me, I have never evacuated from any hurricane including Andrew. Sheltering in place means you have everything you need to protect yourself. Throughout my life living near on on the water, as my dad would say, you really need to get OFF of the water during a hurricane. Every couple of years we'd have to move the boat inland to protect it from storm surge. Captain Staczek took a risk, he understood it and seemed rather nonplussed by the whole thing.

When I was a child, I saw the devastation brought to the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Camille. There was one thing that really shocked me: one side of a divided causeway was lifted up and deposited on top of the other side of the causeway. This was enormous sections of steel & concrete roadway just lifted and dropped like a child's toy by the wind-driven water. During Katrina, huge casino barges were lifted up by the water and acted as battering rams completely destroying building after building in their wake, leaving behind only sand and a few unrecognizable foundation slabs. NEVER try to "ride out" a hurricane near big water. The combination of the water & the wind is more powerful than most earthquakes, by far.

Fort Myers Beach was NOT in the direct path of the hurricane until the last couple of days. It was initially expected to hit Tampa dead on. As it turns out, Tampa got little more than rain, based on reports from family down there.
Had it continued on the original track and nailed Tampa, Fort Meyers wouldn't have had near as much damage. Probably a bit more than Tampa did get, since they'd be on the "dirty" side of the storm, but not the destruction they got. In that case, the houseboat guy probably would have been fine. He'd probably have both boats still sitting there at the pier. By the time that track changed, he wouldn't have had time to do anything with the boats but abandon them. Given that the video indicated he ran the engines trying to hold the boats in place, had he not been there the boats might have been a complete loss.

You could live on a boat on Lake Michigan for less money. Clear bluer water, no hurricanes, sharks, crocodiles, nasty insects, aweful humidity, salty water, just the largest fresh water source in the world here in America, great tasting and clear. Yes that Lake Michigan and Chicago in my profile picture. You'll just have to turn your heat up during the two months of winter

Well, it’s just that once in a thousand year rainfall and all that infrastructure money is right in time it’s a beautiful thing that the Biden ministration pass that new infrastructure bill. I wonder if they’ll get their infrastructure money ASAP. I would hold back the money for anybody who voted for a congressman or a senator that voted against the bill. That what make America grieve again would do. It’s never been about the people’s always been about the control.
