4:55 he ends on a dominant sus4 chord, a chord that wants to resolve extremely badly, and he intentionally leaves it unresolved, ending the song here and creating a sense of unfulfilled longing in the audience. perfectly captures the mood of the memorial.
mmarkus227 I'm not the greatest, nor do I claim do be great but I can effectively play in every key on 6 instruments and I know basic to advanced music theory including the unofficial black gospel music theory so I'd say that's enough for any decent musician, oh yeah, and I can read music
I'm just an old white guy and a former Christian, yet I can't but witness the anointing of this brother, moved me to tears and rockin' in my seat so many times. I would gladly give Cory the last drop of my blood, if it came down to that. Thank you Spirit!
Firstly, this needs to be listened to with headphones, or through a system with speakers... Cory Henry is not flavour of the month, or flavour of the moment... he is flavour of the Century!! For those who knows Melvin's playing, you'll know how fitting this tribute is!! Perfect! Both young and old are lashed!! Whether you play or not, it is amazing, just amazing. When he plays Melvin's signature at the end, he is truly overcome, which totally puts into perspective the occasion. Thanks Cory for the reminder of how amazing and inspirational Melvin was. RIP Melvin Crispell.
amazingly written about both men. I believe you captured the heart of corey who knew when this was over, when the music stopped he could no longer prolong Melvin's stay above ground. he had to play best he could to someone he loved, admired, appreciated was great full to and for and he tied it all With a praise to his God. how beautiful.
Why through speakers or headphones, the sound quality is poor, and sonic display isn't amazing. The joy is in the soul and harmony. I'd say this is one of the few of my favourite music videos which doesn't require good listening devices. It can be enjoyed through any source :)
I really want to understand what happens inside the mind of those 183 people whom click the dislike buttom. This is one of the most amazing B3 performance I´ve ever seen. And my references are Joey de Francesco, Jimmy Smith, Wild Bill Davis, Dr. Lonnie Smith and many other great players. Thumbs down?? Seriously?? Get a life sick people...
At the end, a few seconds ago, I'm tearing up. Half way through Cory's playing I'm thinking it just doesn't get any better than this. That was the most moving instrumental I think I've ever heard in my life. I don't have words to describe this right now....
I hate that people are saying they were"being to easily entertained" these people were celebrating the life of a man that they knew. And Henry went out there and played his whole entire heart out. That's what I feel every time I hear this. I can tell how close he was to that man just by the way he played. Those people were respecting Henry and probably also noticing how heart felt his performance was. I get that it's a funeral and all and there are sad moments. But there not supposed to be sad. There supposed to e the celebration and remembrance of someone's life and them entering a better life in heaven. That's just how it's is.
I don’t care if it’s a funeral or a local bar. When the notes hit and somebody shouts it gets me going too. People that are annoyed by that don’t really understand music. They might know every bit of theory but don’t understand what it does to the spirit.
I shed a tear at the very end when Cory rested his face on his hands then just pushed the drawbars in and left the organ. Melvin Crispell is already missed! Fantastic tribute!
Corey’s ability to play in a room full of people screaming in excitement and disbelief as if it’s just him and the organ in the room all alone is amazing. It shows the maturity and composure of his musicianship. One of the all time greats for sure!
THAT'S why Cory couldn't Resolve It....To Resolve THAT Chord Progression would have been saying "Good Bye", that was too difficult. So it's like Cory chose to say "We'll Resolve It When I See You AGAIN."
Can't nobody construct and move chords like "we" do baby....this is pure soul, spirit and creativity through music. It can be studied but you have to FEEL IT to play like this. Eargasms all day!
Everytime I listen to this it's like it's brand new! LAWD! This inspires me to push on!!! Hope I can meet this bro. one day or better still...play along with him!
As long as you're playing for Jesus, you are good! Nothing wrong with wanting to improve, but I'm saying, as long as you're doing God's will, that will speak volumes!!
I'm not so sure that ending was planned Brian Bernstein, The way Cory ended this with his head on the keys makes me think he was just so overcome with emotion and that he had really given his all - truly 100% - that he literally had no more to say or play. And leave it right there. That too moved me even further info places I can't describe. Cory Henry makes the organ sound s o effortlessly cool and ultra-contemporary, with roots deep in the past (I mean waaaaaay back), through Stevie Wonder and beyond. This guy is making musical history. He's gonna be talked about and listened to, next century as well as this one! 😀
This was saying goodbye to a friend with your instrument in the truest sense black people know how to do. I'm moved to tears at the end. He ended the way he did because he said all he had to say with his heart not with proper words. One love
One of the reasons he does this and is able to do this is because of the anointing he has from God. You'll be surprised what talents you discover when you put your faith in Jesus. God bless dude :)
jon fromtheUK Sovereign God doesn't GIVE us cancer. Oh He can, but man acts upon this. Just like man messed things up when sin came into the world, man created that horrid disease and has been spreading it around to the gain of the man-owned and operated pharmaceutical companies and crooked government. It is the evil of man, not the wishes of a loving God. Babies dying? Who kills them? God? No. Man does. God has the authority and power of making allowances and putting down His mighty hand of healing, but He doesn't DESIRE to see us suffer. Don't sleep though--He can also deliver a smack down on the evildoers. At times He has to allow it. The more you read about Him and develop a relationship with Him, the more you understand Him.
Why, of all places, do you have to bring this arguement here? I'm not religious either, but give it a rest, man! Bashing others' beliefs isn't cool, especially on a memorial service. Pick your battles, dude.
How can anyone dislike this anointed tribute to one of God's greatest band members from Cory Henry? I don't understand it for the life of me. Such haters out there.
I've lost count as to how many times that I've watch this but every time, God speaks to me and it brings tears to my eyes. Wow, I get so moved every time.
just completely blown away by the beauty of this video. i never listened to gospel, Melvin Crispell (RIP), or been to church- yet it still comes through. incredible.
Homestly, revisiting after six year I realized that he finished without resolving the song and I believe it symbolizes something but I don’t know what. Right now I just think it symbolizes a soulnever dying
Corey Henry is anointed and has a powerful music and perhaps a preaching ministry. I pray for him as if he were one of my sons. Keep playing for Jesus Christ of Nazareth!
I've said it for years this whole video is historic legendary gifted prowess, Cory Henry is the kind of musician that can on one hand inspire you to be your ultimate best at all times but on the other hand can make you want to give up playing and find something else to do, i've heard this numerous times by other musicians, he 's the "Jimi Hendrix" of keyboard and organ playing. In this video he pays tribute to a great, phenomenal, legendary musician and songwriter, no doubt Melvin Crispell has been classified as the G.O.A.T. Cory Henry also writes another chapter in the history of his career all at the same time. It's that last part when Cory stops playing that does it for me. I've seen musicians in church do that but this was different, it's like Cory took us on a trip to heaven throughout his rendition, then when he stopped playing it's like back to earth, back to reality, Melvin's not here. Almost like waking up from the perfect dream then you realize it's only a dream now.
Every time I listen to this, I’m moved to tears. The last few minutes felt as if Corey was giving the wheel over to Melvin to let him go at the keys one last time. Even all these years later, we miss ya Melvin. I’m sure the music in heaven has gotten even better since you’ve gone sir.
Oh but God! When Cory held his head down and his soul when into those keys! Lord I felt his pain and everytime I hear it Cory! 😢 God bless you son & Our Wonderful, Merciful God! - Blessing, "J" 🙏🎶🎵🎹❤
The piece of music is a life encapsulated in five minutes. Clearly the way Cory was feeling it. This guy taps into the mysteries of the universe somehow, I dunno how he does it but I love it. Things make sense when he plays.
The part on 1:16 - 1:18 is so dirty!! Wow! Absolutely amazing how the drum cymbals ts-ts-ts in the background as Cory fades the organ back in!! Then at 2:32 - 2:35!! The creativity and change of pace is astounding!! Then he ends with such respect and acknowledgement of when the Spirit says, "That's enough."
Just saw Cory Henry live at the High Sierra music festival. Hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. Everyone that was at the show felt the same way. Magic. Truly amazing experience. Sending immense gratitude to the whole band for a very special special time!
The more I’ve watched this, the more I like it, and the more I want to watch it. The energy in the room was absolutely electric, and the end? So moving...channeling the Infinite
Who in the world, in their ever lovin' right mind would DISLIKE THIS CLIP?! This will rank up there as one of the greatest musical moments EVER captured on film and what a tribute!
Yo I've listened all kinds of jazz my whole life......I have never heard a turnaround like that at 2:48 EVER!!! CRAZYY!! Upon 1st hearing that I had to pause and think about life before repeating and studying that approach. Cory is otherworldly.....
This is medicine to my ears! Cory you are truly something special and you are definitely a living legend. Just don't make no sense....smh lawd ham mercy
Absolutely Transcendent!!! Everytime I watch/hear this performance it gets better! This is Like Fine Wine to Musicians and Music lovers alike! 🙌🏾🙌🏾👽👽🎶🎶💯💯. -12
It's beautiful how black people have that deep sense for music, not generalizing here, but comeon it's obvious..look how they cheer in joy collectively at some intricate changes :)
+Sam Ramos Sorry Sam, but "any other race", that doesn't mean anything. Because "Races" don't exist. There's only ONE RACE of people on earth : the HUMAN RACE. Only animals can be classified by “races” because they don't have same genes. ALL the humans have identical genes. On the other hand, they don't have the same nuance of skin color, hair, size or physical appearance. To speak about “Race” for the Humans is a major error, and the base of the discriminatory speech of the Nazi ideology. If Cory is a genius, without J.S. Bach he wouldn't play of organ. And this last, who however had a “white” skin, was ALSO a genius ! (And "Black" people are not better in music than "white"...or "Yellow" ! in this case only "White" people could play Classical Music and only "Black" people could play Jazz ?)
+MoSkont1 damn you are so insightful, like i never though before now that Cory might have influences that aren't black or that humans are all the same, like damn I have been enlightened. Not really though, black people are legitimately the best at music. Just in general that's what I've witnessed. I get what you're trying to say but I still think I'm right.
No problem Sam ! Believe if you want, since "Just In General That's What You've Witnessed", that people who come from a race which doesn't exist (The famous "Race of Black People" !) are better in music, (By the way, what "Music" are you talking about ?) listen again to Snarky Puppy's "What About Me". A group with half black and half white people. And if those people haven't the same skin color, they're only HUMAN BEINGS. Who moreover are also fabulous musicians...
You can feel their passion. Im white and I share the same passion. it's just that black people are more likely to have it. here in Germany NO ONE EVEN HEADBANGS!!! while I'm jumping all over the place and taping my feet like crazy
For people who said pj morgan was hating if u notice one of the foot petal notes went out as Corey was playing. And he fixed it for corey on tha spot real low key!! Sorry but thats not what people who hating on you do!! They let you keep playing and fix it yourself real talk lol
This tribute is so powerful and emotional!!my goodness!!. cant stop watching it. a shamed im finding it 3 years later, but will enjoy it from here on out. loved hearing the organ growing up in church just the raw emotions and talent that can be conveyed through it.
My my my...I'm glad God's love has never changed... that was awwwwesome my brother ...I was a good friend of your uncle we hung together when he was here in the Bahamas...God's blessings. I hope to meet you some day..keep on blazing.
You're right to adore this video solo79ful, but alas, I'm sorry to learn to you (Apparently…) that your number of views doesn't affect the global number. Even if you look at this video 100000 times, that will not change anything ! Only your first view, therefore your computer number, is entered… once. ;-)
MoSkont1 That is correct indeed. Regardless, I'm another one who just keeps watching this monster of a musician over and over... It's amazing... Simply amazing...
Back listening to this in 2023 and it still has the same effect.
In 2024
Let's shout out the drummer for his control. A lot of cats would have went crazy looking for an opportunity to shine!
Marcus Singleton pocket drummers. Irreplaceable.
Marcus Singleton real talk bro I always think that when watching this
Marcus Singleton Tru they blended well together that good music 🎶 Vibe
He stayed right in the pocket
As a drummer I can appreciate that
I’m Chinese, this video get me into gospel music, get me start to read bible, cannot say more about the power of music and emotion
Love the way he doesn't resolve the last chord, as if proving that Crispell's legacy never ends...
LaMont Melrose Wonderful is His Name
My bad per the video title your instead of His

Well said! 🙏🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm an atheist, but his playing was so beautiful I saw God! Can't hold back the tears every time I hear that ending.
respect
🗣WON’T HE DO IT.!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
God sees you too, my brother, and He loves you so much. Your spirit loves Him back. That’s why you can’t hold back those tears. 🙏🏼
God in full expression through this man’s Gift 🙌🏾
Glory to God in the highest!
4:55 he ends on a dominant sus4 chord, a chord that wants to resolve extremely badly, and he intentionally leaves it unresolved, ending the song here and creating a sense of unfulfilled longing in the audience. perfectly captures the mood of the memorial.
Exactly! Right on.
Brian Bernstein that was the fullest, most dramatic and intense chord I've ever heard on an organ. Beautiful.
literally thinking this same thing, that was an interesting decision
Ok, so I'm not just overthinking this! Incredible musician!
i cried right there... and im a grown ass man
Here in 2024. I always travel back to this video as it is so uplifting. One of favorite church songs.
My LORD, How beautiful....He needs a Grammy for this. He's a beast. Absolutely mind-blowing. I got saved just by listening to this.
Everytime I hear a beast musician, it just makes me want to get better
that and sometimes I want to quit
I never want to quit.
it's a figure of speech bro..u must not be that good
mmarkus227 lol
mmarkus227 I'm not the greatest, nor do I claim do be great but I can effectively play in every key on 6 instruments and I know basic to advanced music theory including the unofficial black gospel music theory so I'd say that's enough for any decent musician, oh yeah, and I can read music
this is the most emotional video for me man. the way he drops his head after playing the signature riff at the end just gets to me.
Sam Ramos omg me too.!!! I just get repeating that part.
It make me wanna cry I'm with you guys
I'm tore up all over again
It’s very climactic! Love it!
...such a classic Melvin movement.
My favorite part is at 4:04 where you hear someone say "that sounds like Melvin too" what an amazing honor.
I watch this everyday!!!
James Robinson Not alone.
+James Robinson mee too :')
right!
me too! every time I hear that "Melvin" riff at the end, I get goosebumps.
+Tony DeMarco the last riff, where i can find?
Still watching this in 2022, still sounds amazing.
Me too in 2023
I'm just an old white guy and a former Christian, yet I can't but witness the anointing of this brother, moved me to tears and rockin' in my seat so many times. I would gladly give Cory the last drop of my blood, if it came down to that. Thank you Spirit!
Richard Rodgers praise God
That song is Jesus calling you back home to Him brother. Tell Jesus yes!
Time to come on home if you haven’t already.
RIP Melvin Crispell.
Well put Jason, well put!
Right
amazingly written about both men. Yes. Headphones and volume cranked up! OMG. Yes sir!
I really want to understand what happens inside the mind of those 183 people whom click the dislike buttom. This is one of the most amazing B3 performance I´ve ever seen. Say it again my brother. Do Say it again .
Jealous idiots, nothing more.
182 deaf people, and 1 bitter ex-girlfriend.
Dah
Have you never asked yourself why you have two ears but just one mouth. I am praying for you
learning some of these licks on guitar and the gospel genius is everywhere in this. Amazing.
Pastor (middle) is like: “go easy on my organ Cory, we still paying on it”!! LOL
LMAO!!!!!!!
“I hope the church don’t ask me to play like that”......lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahahahahah
🤣🤣🤣
At the end, a few seconds ago, I'm tearing up. Half way through Cory's playing I'm thinking it just doesn't get any better than this. That was the most moving instrumental I think I've ever heard in my life. I don't have words to describe this right now....
Kiat Huang
Yeah when he kneeled down they came down
I hate that people are saying they were"being to easily entertained" these people were celebrating the life of a man that they knew. And Henry went out there and played his whole entire heart out. That's what I feel every time I hear this. I can tell how close he was to that man just by the way he played. Exactly. I hate how some people think human emotions must be legislated.
Its called a Homegoing Celebration.
His beloved uncle Melvin Crispell wrote that song, along with other gospel hits for various gospel artists.
I don’t care if it’s a funeral or a local bar. When the notes hit and somebody shouts it gets me going too. People that are annoyed by that don’t really understand music. They might know every bit of theory but don’t understand what it does to the spirit.
Dat unsolved ending chord. Genius to end it with that!
The power of God flowing through this man's hands and feet! Praise God!
Manoj Philip Praise God Bro Manoj
Yes.. them feet is on fire!!
I can't play this loud enough
So nobody is going to notice his eyes close half the time 👏
Who TF could ever dislike this?????
+Daniel Walker One of the 'dislikers' is Justin Bieber...
im saying
+Daniel Walker salty dustbags like the one standing beside the organ and pretending cory's not destroying it
+David Pedder lol the one by the organ is pj Morgan, he's a beast as well
+D Walker112 Not many people, going by the 81 ratio of likes to dislikes :D
That's timeless...it will stay forever
Yessirrr
The ending was the equivalent of a preacher doing a mic drop. Amazing.
That ending was EVERYTHING!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I shed a tear at the very end when Cory rested his face on his hands then just pushed the drawbars in and left the organ. Melvin Crispell is already missed! Fantastic tribute!
8 years old and still coming back monthly to witness the blessing that is Cory Henry.
Corey’s ability to play in a room full of people screaming in excitement and disbelief as if it’s just him and the organ in the room all alone is amazing. It shows the maturity and composure of his musicianship. One of the all time greats for sure!
That last chord progression he played which was Melvin's signature progression took me in. He sound just like Melvin crispell
Tyree yes..very moving performance. I think I watched this clip 200x before I started editing.
Yep Absolutely Man I Cried Now That one really Got To me !!
Exactly like the late great Melvin Crispell.
THAT'S why Cory couldn't Resolve It....To Resolve THAT Chord Progression would have been saying "Good Bye", that was too difficult. So it's like Cory chose to say "We'll Resolve It When I See You AGAIN."
Cory Henry = Simply: Amazing. RIP Melvin Crispell. #AWonderfulTribute
I never knew I was missing something in my life until I heard it and saw it with my own two eyes
Can't nobody construct and move chords like "we" do baby....this is pure soul, spirit and creativity through music. It can be studied but you have to FEEL IT to play like this. Eargasms all day!

+Ezra Bufford Doc, your are a gifted player as well! I'm a fan!
Witnessed his magic last weekend in Munich. It was EVERYTHING. He is truly anointed!!! Still feeling lifted a week later.
You? Wooow Thats a humble statement sir
Ezra Bufford hey sir, you can play correct?
As long as you're playing for Jesus, you are good! Nothing wrong with wanting to improve, but I'm saying, as long as you're doing God's will, that will speak volumes!!

Wow my Presbyterian church here in South Korea only use organ during the service. This is some great music.
This was saying goodbye to a friend with your instrument in the truest sense black people know how to do. I'm moved to tears at the end. He ended the way he did because he said all he had to say with his heart not with proper words. One love
Gifted. My favorite song
Care about religion I do not. But I do care about music and musicianship. This is absolutely wonderful!
One of the reasons he does this and is able to do this is because of the anointing he has from God. You'll be surprised what talents you discover when you put your faith in Jesus. God bless dude :)
Hi Alf Torp, Jesus really loves you all the same and He needs your attention like right now. He loves us dearly
True! Amen

Thumbs up if you've watched this a million times.. Hehe
How can anyone dislike this anointed tribute to one of God's greatest band members from Cory Henry? I don't understand it for the life of me. Such haters out there.
The Billy Preston of our time.
Who are the 117 people without ears on this planet?? Great work Cory

Cory made that organ play notes it never played before. Both the organ and Cory were in tears at the end.

My first time hearing this young man... BRILLIANT!
Wow. Cory knows his instrument. Amazing.
I have watched this 40 or 50 times. Still cant get over the pure skill dripping from Cory's fingers and feet.
I can honestly say I am responsible for about 150 of these views! This video is just that dope.
Ahah, same bro !
Doc, I'm in there too with about just as many views. Whew!!!
yep
You're right to adore this video solo79ful, but alas, I'm sorry to learn to you (Apparently…) that your number of views doesn't affect the global number. Even if you look at this video 100000 times, that will not change anything ! Only your first view, therefore your computer number, is entered… once. ;-)
MoSkont1 That is correct indeed. Regardless, I'm another one who just keeps watching this monster of a musician over and over... It's amazing... Simply amazing...
