I had a fairly big orchid greenhouse (50 varieties) for about 20 years. While the orchids people see most frequently like the Phaleanopsis (plain “moth” orchid) or the corsage staple the Cymbidium (similar in appearance to vanilla orchids) don’t have a smell, there are orchid varieties that do smell!
Zygopetalum, for example, smells like a mix of cracked black pepper and Freesia.
I had another variety Brassaavola (known as Lady of the Night) that has a strong Lily of the Valley type smell at night, but no smell during the day.
Some Oncidium varieties (Sherry Baby) smell strongly of chocolate.
Anyway, I guess the fact that I can quickly imagine what these fragrant orchids smell like would probably make them unsuitable for perfumery anyway - if you said there was orchid in and all I could smell was chocolate I wouldn’t really get it. And the cost would be insane. It’s very hard to get a meaningful amount of blossoms out of a plant. A Zygopetalum you’d probably be lucky to get 20 flowers out of in a year.

I adore both for different reasons. I’ve heard men say velvet orchid is too feminine but it smells fantastic on me. I probably didn’t need it but I got a 100ml bottle for a steal 😉

Nah, womens fragnances are often better then mens when they are not pushing the floral notes too much.
I see a 100ml for 115 usd on joma. I think I will purchase. I love it as well as I wear BO as a signature scent

I’m wearing Haze Black and Blue layered today. I love the way they combine so well. Definitely my ‘go to’ Summer fragrances. Absolutely love them.
If you can’t be professional when reviewing other people’s work you really shouldn’t review fragrances. The work, skill and effort-involved is massive. I love haze black and blue to. Was waring them today

I like the dark floral Black Orchid and I appreciate its sexy mistress vibe, but I love Velvet Orchid because of the elegant purple floral feminine scent. The latter is more of my type of girl, if you know what I mean.

I enjoy smelling Black Orchid on others, but it's never been a fragrance for me to wear. I remember the day I purchased my first niche fragrance. I was at the Tom Ford counter in a department store and purchased Black Orchid, then exchanged it for Velvet Orchid, then to the sales associate's great frustration, exchanged it once more for Neroli Portofino, and that was the fragrance I staid with. An indecisive purchase, but all these years later I feel like I picked the right fragrance for me :-)
Black Orchid was one of 2 fragrances Michael Jackson always wore. That’s all I needed to know. 🙂

I don’t know about black orchid but I know I absolutely love Onyx. True masterpiece. I can’t stop sniffing my wrists and love the whiffs of deliciousness I get. About 5 strangers have asked me what I’m wearing. I can’t wait to try more!

Am I the only person in the world who thinks Tom Ford’s fragrances are more miss than hit? I love ‘Mandarino Di Amalfi’ though, just shame it doesn’t last more than 5 seconds. Also I love ‘Lost Cherry’ but it’s so expensive. I feel ‘Velvet Orchid’ is something a vampire would wear.

most of them are definitely miss to me. i just don't get the appeal for some reason. noir edp is mediocre at best, black orchid edp & parfum smell like piss to me. i could name more but overall i'm very disappointed in tom ford fragrances :/ thank god i only did make one mistake by buying noir edp

Lovely breakdown Aaron I've been wearing Black O since it came out. Old! Thanks for doing these so interesting to hear the lowdown on actual composition. Of all my other TFs if you could review Soleil Neige it's very much for the wearer only type fragrance but I find most complex of all!

I felt more connected with the velvet orchid than with the black orchid. I don't like strong scents and also it has a lot to do with the natural scents of my skin.

I took your advice but instead of Black Orchid edp, I sprayed the edt and then layered the Velvet Orchid on top and, MY GOD, I can’t stop smelling my hand!!

In some of your videos you mention how certain fragrances suit lighter skin, do you mean light skin tones? I was a little confused by what you meant, and what impact our skin can have. Thanks, love your videos Aaron
I noted that some of my work really radiates on light skin and some are better on darker skin. Also in the Far East my lighter citrus and florals sell. I’m the Middle East and USA the heavy fragrance and in the uk a mix. Haze blue is amazing on fair skin and haze black is better on dark skin. My genetics are Middle Eastern and my skin reacts like darker skin. So heavy woods, patchouli, Ouds and florals sit perfect. That’s why there is so many in my work as I test on my skin
Just discovered this evening that Dior Mitzah layered with Initio Blessed Barraka compliments each other so well. They basically fill in the missing gaps between the two scents!

Hello our aaron! I've just dug an old bottle of Patrick dempsey unscripted out my mum got me about 20yrs ago, just sprayed it seems ok ish but smells very sharp & green, if I buy a small bottle of iso e super and add maybe 1-2 drops to the 50ml approx thats left will it tone down the green and give a more woody outcome?
I would get the best quality sandalwood essential oil you can. Put a few drops in moisturiser on first and apply it over the top. That should do the trick
I have small collection of essencials, and ylang ylang is my favourite

Interesting as always! I have a question you can probably help me with - I love Tom Ford Noir pour femme, but it’s really weak on me, and after an hour almost gone.. Why could that be?
It’s the way it’s built. Fixatives are expensive!

The Tom Ford brand could certainly afford good quality ingredients I’d assume, and many cheaper brands have way better performance. So stupid. 😕 I’ll keep to other brands than Tom Ford from now on! I've seen a few youtubers recommending layering it ontop of vaseline. Could try that to a bit more longevity

What keeps me away from Black Orchid is that people describe it as having a chocolate gourmand note which is gross to me. Velvet isn't a gourmand and has a hint of violets which is my favorite fragrance note.

Well, Black Orchid was meant to smell like balls. I don't know how creative that idea is but the fragrance is definitely polarizing so that makes perfect sense.

Aaron i really enjoy your reviews....I really do....If they say a Orchard has no smell and they need to make a synthetic way to match what they think it might smell like then really the note name is just a way to advertising something that is real but your not really getting anything real its fake! I love how they manipulate peoples mind to sell things!
In this aspect is very cleaver perfumery. Not saying it contains Oud or rose. So I’m not mad at all!

I send them to video unicorn. He was my first employee. Last thing I want after a week of creating perfume is to come home look at other peoples work. I have one which was that dior Rose elixir
Black Orchid is a great frag, i took a step back when i smelt it for the first time, and said, "Woah. This is dense and really good, was not expecting that." So complex i had to keep smelling to try to understand the dna.
But as i kept smelling there was a note in there that smelt retro outdated and i really disliked it.
It smelt like old women that use to talk to me when i was in elementary school including teachers, and they were ugly af, and i didn't like the way they smelt back then.
Then i figured out that note was the scent of Orchid. Which, makes me not care for the note in frags. I feel that it's played-out decades ago, and i don't see it making a comeback. Smells best on black skin types - black men & black women as it compliments their skin's natural scent & dna.
For a white woman wearing that i think of a try-hard power-hungry bitch in the office, such as Elizabeth Holmes. Well, that's my perception.

The orchid used in Black Orchid doesn't have a scent lol. There are orchids that smell, as someone in a comment up top mentioned, but they are not suited to perfumery, as it would be cost-prohibitive to use them. What you're smelling as 'old woman' is a combination of jasmine, ylang-ylang, and gardenia--a classic yellow/white floral mix that can come across as a 'grandma' type of scent.
